The sketch sequencer is (in my opinion) the most powerful sequencer on the OP-1 and people are constantly dismissing it. Hold shift, turn the white knob to activate the grid and then it is basically a piano roll. You can play notes on the keyboard to jump to specific notes or drum sounds, use the white knob to jump around the sequence without drawing anything and then draw the notes length with the blue knob. Its awesome for drums. Especially drums that you want offset from the grid (no pun intended). Like endless it will even detune samples while playing the sequence in time. If you're not currently using it, give it a shot.

Yeah I did a video on sketch- I like it for wacky bass lines 😊

The crazy thing is, I almost always use the OP-Z when I have a melody in mind that I want to sequence because it allows me to go back and edit without having to redo the whole sequence like you have to do with the endless sequencer… but sketch can do that and I always forget! It’s definitely way more useful than the initial presentation lets on.

is this the most powerful sequencer in this thing? that's terrifying kzfaq.info/get/bejne/odtkmbCmvK3eYGQ.html etch-a-sketch
@FlyingSoulo

@@neonvoid In that example its not very impressive (admittedly) and I think its one of the reasons people dismiss the sketch sequencer completely. When you realize it's basically a quirky piano roll, it becomes much more powerful. With the grid activated, you can quickly make patterns that are both on and off the "grid". Its the only sequencer that allows that much control over where you place rhythmic elements (aside from playing things in live of course). Because of the etch-a-sketch nature of the sequencing it kind of feels like a really powerful step sequencer, but you can easily control the duration and offset of each hit while seeing the entire sequence at once. You can even adjust the pitch of all of the samples in real time while tracking to tape. The OP-1 isn't for everyone, but its a tool that I come back to over and over again despite having much more "powerful" gear because of its unique approach to the music making process and the immediacy of its production style.

@@FlyingSoulo I feel if TE would put the professional sequencer capabilities of the OPZ into the OP1 (which they could STILL do with a simple software update), instead of selling two separated devices, then NO ONE would complain about the OP1. The tape recording workflow is extreme divisive. They KNOW what a professional sequencer is, how it should work, why is it good, they CAN build it, they BUILT one - they just decided to sell it as a separated device. Bummer.

You mention the SK-1. Wow.. that brings back memories. I dreamed of that keyboard while staring out the window on the school bus back in 1985. I loved the Art of Noise. Then I received it for my birthday that year. It was the coolest thing even before watching Ferris Bueller and his Emulator II in his bedroom. I was the hippest kid on the block. Yes.. fart noises were played to all sorts of tunes. I jammed with that keyboard until college then I lost track of it. My first solo project was named “Timistry” after the band Ministry. I think my little brother and his friends yanked it and probably ruined it or lost it. Dude… I wish I had that little treasure once again! I might need to hit up Reverb and see..

Nice video! I never had the OG OP-1 so there's still a lot to learn. Once nice thing about the OP-1 field is that you can rename those user presets you save within the unit. This is great because I'm too lazy to upload to a computer, rename, then drop back into the unit.

9:30 you know what's super fun about saving? if you load a preset number, and then make any changes to the preset, if you try to hold another number down to save your edits, it discards your edits and loads the other number you hit, even if you hold it down. you have to load a preset number slot, and save over that same number slot if you want to save.
@LiamKillen

On the minibrute 2s you have, the portamento is actually the glide knob, if you didn't know! You can turn the minibrute into a nice TB303 bass machine then add some glide to that acid!

Great video, but I'll be the guy this time. If you set the time and date (shift-help), then the saved snapshot presets save with a timestamp instead of "random numbers". Only slightly more useful, still have to take it to the computer to rename them ✌️

Thanks Liam I’ve learned so much from you. I find the lack of pressure sensitive keys on the OP1 very limiting so using a Kenton usb midi host with my OP1 means I can hook up a keystep and record subtle changes in volume which transforms everything for my workflow, though the Kenton does need power which makes the set up less portable. I wish the OP1 field had this feature… is it easy to connect an external keyboard to the OP1 field? Be good to hear your take on this as Bluetooth has latency etc and the field has usbc so maybe an easier portable set up for this? Cheers!
