Dead right Jo! Moreno is a Legend. Love his videos. Shame his vids are not more frequent but given he has a family to care for, livestock to tend to, maintenance and infrastructure to deal with and a life to enjoy I am happy to wait. I don’t think I’d be able to do a channel and run a homestead with a family, a website, blog and keep up. Huge respect for all Moreno and his family have achieved. Edit: found Moreno’s website & blog link, just joined, game changer! 🙌

I will read your plan. I lived on a subtropical fruit tree farm we were pioneers on a low budget ,We focused on tree planting , a small cottage , with a wood oven with a wet oven to heat our water. We cooked our own bread and made pickles from the Vege patch ,at first ,we bought a dairy cow we had five acres around the cottage with a small creek ,drinking water was a Metal tank catching water off the roof .Yes it takes years we had Solar power for thirty years and water solar pumps 😊

As a late beginner, the conclusion I reached is that initial expectations are so unrealistic that it is best to start without any plan and devise solutions as we are faced with concrete situations.

I think the main problem with this land is water, because water is the key to agricultural success. The second problem is the availability of small agricultural machines such as mini excavators and mini tractors to make the work easier. too much savings is spent at the start on designs and preferences, forgetting to prepare high-value agricultural commodities as a source of income. Keep Fight, I'm very interested in how you started designing your garden...👍😊

Do many homesteaders start community projects, like a few couples pooling resources? This way each could specialise on a part they are good in. Together you can become self-sufficient a bit sooner and only later become self-sufficient as individual families. Instead of working until money runs out and getting by while saving up for each small addition, it seems safer to save up many years of income first and hire help to get production going sooner. A more fun way to do this is to invest in a small base homestead first and instead of expanding then trade or sell pieces of land within a group of homesteaders. You could even have a few pioneers get a set of homebases parts of which new members can buy/rent while the pioneers move on to a bigger more remote part of the land. Perhaps even creating a chain of homesteads.

Even een puntje...mollen?

Solid advice. Can’t fault any of it other than one crucial element which was left out … “How do you make God laugh? Make a plan!” The unexpected always has ways of throwing multiple spanners in the works (especially in Portugal), so it’s super sensible to have a contingency fund as well as planning out your resource use. And even then, shit happens. Like fires … Which is where you find out what you’re really made of. 15 years homesteading in Portugal now, fires and all. I still wouldn’t swap it for any other life.

Enjoy Nature as it is, what works, anything edible? Maybe start with some raised beds to define production in the first year. Yes, Water in Portugal is soooo time consuming. Lots of Mulch and combining with small Trees can keep the soil more moist so you water more but less often! Its a horrible irony that the more isolated you are the more necessary transport becomes to get to health services, schools etc.. You need to factor in these transport costs including visits back to see families etc..! Long term boring but do you have a pension you pay into?? Sites closer to small towns can be a real advantage sharing produce with neighbours though it is a compromise to the total control you have on a homestead?
