With over 200 different ETFs in Australia you can invest in, picking the right one can be tricky and time consuming.
In today’s video, I’m going to go over what I think are the best index ETFs in Australia you can buy in 2022 across the following categories:
- High yield Dividend shares
- Australian Shares
- International Shares
- US Shares
- Tech shares

Let’s kick off the best high yield ETF which is Vanguard Australian Shares High Yield ETF (VHY). This ETF aims to track the return of the FTSE Australia High Dividend Yield Index before taking into account fees, expenses and tax.
And the best ETF that I’ve picked for Australians shares is the Vanguard Australian Shares Index ETF. VAS aims to track the performance of the S&P/ASX 300 Index and was established on June 1997, which means it’s existed for 24 years.
For international shares, the best ETF in my personal opinion is the Vanguard MSCI Index International Shares ETF. VGS seeks to track the return of the MSCI World ex-Australia (with net dividends reinvested), before taking into account fees, expenses and tax
The best US shares ETF I’ve picked is iShares S&P 500 (IVV). This fund aims to provide investors with the performance of the S&P 500 Index, before fees and expenses. The index comprises the 500 largest companies listed on the US stock exchanges.
Tech stocks have been very popular in the last few years so it’s not surprising investors are looking to buy tech ETFs. The best tech ETF in my opinion is the BetaShares NASDAQ 100 ETF (NDQ).

Thankyou for your excellent presentation, as im transitioning into retirement i am very keen to start investing in ETF's. Your synopsis has given me so much information on how to choose a balanced range of ETF's that will give growth and also dividends.

I also have VAS, IVV in my portfolio. I also picked up MVB for Australian banks. Given the risk of inflation and rising interesting rate. It is probably good to have exposure to banks

Bought VAS and VGS today after so much research for months and months i was stuck in analysis paralysis. today i just picked those 2 and go learn along the way. i've considered tax optimisation, country of retirement, allocations, weighting, management fees, etc

Thank you for the excellent video. Could you please advice pros and cons of buying an ASX etf Vs. corresponding NY listed etf. Say for example, buying IVV asx or buying IVV US listed. I am from Australia.

Hi Chris, Thank you for your video.... sent it to my daughters who are getting started on ETF investing in Australia. What do you think of VTS and A200 ETFs? I like them for their low expense ratio of 0.04 and 0.07 respectively...

Thanks a lot Chris for the great video! Do you know if Australian residents can purchase European domiciled ETFs? (ETFs listed in Germany for example) I'm originally from Europe and want to purchase European listed ones if possible but currently live in Australia. But I'm not sure if that's allowed... I'm using Degiro as a platform.

I am new to investing, but after 2 weeks of research I chose VAS, VHY and IVV. I'm pleased to find that you have picked the same ones! Now I'm thinking of an Asia (particularly China) EFT. So far I like IAA. What do you think?
@ChrisChowShow
@ChrisChowShow 3 жыл бұрын
Hello! This is just my personal opinion and not financial advice: IAA looks like it has a long track record, diversification and the management fee is in line with other Asia focused ETF :) Another option that is more diversified is Vanguard FTSE Emerging Markets Shares ETF (VGE), I discuss VGE in my best Vanguard ETFs video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r8iGo7yL09KteH0.html

I have played with VAS and VGS after starting in index funds last year. I am going to heavily invest more soon. What are your thoughts on a portfolio of VAS 40% / IVV 40% and IOO or NDQ 20%. I will hold for 25 to 30 years, I want high risk and long term growth. Interested to see what you think?
@ChrisChowShow

Thanks for watching Damien! *Disclaimer: This is not financial or investment advice, just my personal opinion* In personal opinion, when you are creating a portfolio allocation you consider your own financial situation and goals. If I had the portfolio allocation you mentioned one thing I would watch out for is portfolio re-balancing. If you hold onto your ETFs for 30 years, it's very likely the allocation will need to be re-balanced if you want to stick to your 40/40/20 strategy. It's also possible, in my personal opinion, that NDQ or IOO could greatly outperform VAS and IVV as they are more concentrated. Having said that, NDQ could also under perform if there was a significant event that hit the tech sector - for example another dot com bubble. As always, you should do you own due diligence and seek independent advice because I'm just a guy on the internet making KZfaq videos about investing and personal finance. *I am definitely NOT a finanical or investment adviser.*

Thanks for watching Nick! I started investing using Commsec over 5 years ago, because I was a CBA customer and there were less options back then. There's definitely cheaper options like SelfWealth and CMC Markets but as I'm not actively trading shares, just buying and holding, I've stayed with Commsec.

I have bought into HVST ETF with a monthly dividend return and franking, any thoughts on this ETF please
@ChrisChowShow
@ChrisChowShow 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Erol! *Disclaimer: This is not financial or investment advice, just my personal opinion* I'm not familiar with HVST and had to do some research into it. According the fact sheet provided by BetaShares, this ETF is designed for SMSF and retirees - neither of which applies to me, so I can't make an informed opinion on this ETF. I did find this interesting comment on a Reddit thread about HVST from a user: "HVST literally chases companies that are soon to pay dividends and buys them to 'harvest' the dividends, selling them shortly afterwards. in theory investors receive a high yield and large amount of franking credits (assuming the shares are held for >45 days) and when the share prices drop, they do not drop by the full value of the dividend and franking credits, meaning that the dividend + share price provides a better return to investors. In practice this rarely works and HVST has underperformed the market for a long time. There's other high yield ETFs out there with less risk if high dividends are what you are after. If you are using DRP though and assuming you have income from other sources, all dividends are doing is increasing your tax payable so I wouldn't be chasing dividend yield." Link to the Reddit thread: www.reddit.com/r/AusFinance/comments/ez0fgx/does_anyone_have_any_experience_with_betashares/ As always, you should do you own due diligence and seek independent advice because I'm just a guy on the internet making KZfaq videos about investing and personal finance. If you're starting with $1000/month systematic investment plan, how much should you invest in each ETF, any suggestions welcomed
@ChrisChowShow
@ChrisChowShow 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Prash! This is just my personal opinion and NOT financial advice: the easiest option is to invest in a diversified Index ETF for example Vanguard Diversified Growth Index ETF (VDGR). This ETF targets a 30% allocation to income asset classes (bonds) and a 70% allocation to growth asset classes (shares). This saves you the hassle of allocating your $1000 every month and balancing the ETFs, do note that the management fee will be slightly high on diversified Index ETFs. If you wanted to allocate yourself, the most popular strategy is the 3-fund portfolio - which consists - A domestic "total market" stock index fund - An international "total market" stock index fund - A "total market" bond index fund If you wanted to go with Vanguard for your 3 fund portfolio, you could pick: VAS, VGS and VAF. The actual ratio between the 3 funds will depend on your own risk appetite and financial situation. If you willing to take on more risk, then you would allocate more to shares index ETFs and less to the bond index ETF. As always you should do your own research and consult a financial adviser!

What you think about Asia ETF??
@ChrisChowShow
@ChrisChowShow 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Alvin! *Disclaimer: This is not financial or investment advice, just my personal opinion* In my personal opinion, Asia focused ETFs will vary greatly depending on the underlying companies or the index it tracks. It's important to note that the economies of countries in Asia are not the same and this difference will likely impact the performance of the ETF. A lot of them are heavily weighted towards Chinese market which carries certain risks, I highly recommend you watch this video by Economics Explained on the Chinese Stock market: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h9mip5l52tLYmmw.html As always, you should do you own due diligence and seek independent advice because I'm just a guy on the internet making KZfaq videos about investing and personal finance. Is now Still a good time to start with index funds ?
@ChrisChowShow
@ChrisChowShow 3 жыл бұрын
Hello! This is just my personal opinion and not financial advice: each index fund is different and you should do your own research before deciding to invest. Research has shown that over the long run, investing regularly into a diversified index fund with low costs has generated steady average returns. Of course past performance is no guarantee of future results.

@@godcomplexlynx 100% agree with this myself, when I rebalance my other stocks I increase my holdings with the funds into IVV myself, I dont many stocks or ETFs that have such a steady growth like IVV and the ones I do have barely stay in front and take a hit during recessional times. A large portion of my holdings is with IVV and will only increase over the years to come, even my stand alone cash sits in IVV for buying opportunities when I find a cheap stock to pump

Your etfs are good but IYW beats all your etfs based on the last ten year return
@ChrisChowShow
@ChrisChowShow 2 жыл бұрын
Disclaimer: This is not financial or investment advice, just my personal opinion. Please do you own research and consult an investment professional. There are certainly ETFs that have generated higher returns than the ones I listed in the video. But I picked ETFs with a degree of diversification built into them. With IYW, while it's seen great performance in the last ten years, according to iShares - if you had invested $10,000 in 2000, your investment would've actually remained the same until 2015.
