Talking about "overcharging" your mobile phones or devices. Actually many have this misconception about leaving the charger plugged. There's a protection circuit in every battery charging device (mobile phones, laptop, powerbank etc...) to trickle charge when it's full to prevent overcharging. Li-ion battery life deteriorates when it drops below a very very low voltage, like if you like tend to use your devices till below 10% before you start to charge, then you feel how come the mobile battery weakens after 6-12 months. (of course quality also matters). Most of the time this is the reason and not due to overcharging. The battery also forms 'crystal' inside after repeated use so battery lifespan will also shorten, so don't expect 95% capacity after a long time. There is something many do not know: Li-ion batteries requires a minimal charge. There's a protection circuit to prevent Li-ion battery from dropping below the "minimal" voltage, as it will permanently damage the battery. Good implementation of this will shutdown your phone or device and cut off the power before it drops below that minimum voltage. If forcefully leaving it to charge, that's when fire hazard or even explosion might occur. Most of the fire incident read in news are due to cheap and flawed protection circuitry, not that the device is plugged and overcharging. So buy proper, good products. Happy New Year!

Great video once again Alex! New to these smart home systems. With regards to smart home, which ecosystem would you recommend to be fuss free and universal? Google or alexa or xiaomi or are there any other good ones out there? Preferably with options for both app and voice, so that can use app if do not want to disturb family with voice! :) Happy new year to you too!

alexa is no good for us in sg. So between google and xiaomi, xiaomi can only do voice in chinese right now, but I think they have international version coming. You can have multiple apps for different products, but at the end you want them to be all integrated on 1 single platform. Currently, i'm using google + xiaomi + aqara + yeelight + broadlink + smartlife, not perfectly integrated but still meet my expectations

@@AlexTeo wow thats alot of different brand.. so all able to integrate into the google home app? Oh yes, and if i am an iphone user (but not using other apple products like macbook etc), still better to use google as the main platform right? On a separate note, with so many smart devices and switches around, do you need to have wifi extender at your master bedroom? Or having your wifi router at your study room provide sufficient signal strength for the entire house?

@@zhengjunliang6510 you need a good wifi setup, which I will recommend wifi mesh good enough. My router at my study, and I have a satellite in my master bedroom. I never tried apple homekit before but based on my research google is better. Yeah you can use google home on iphone no issue. Xiaomi not good with google, google home itself can't set automation rules so everything has to be triggered with voice or routines for the integration.

Awesome video. Can u advise if smart switch is applicable to shower room water heater as well?
@AlexTeo
@AlexTeo 3 жыл бұрын
yeah it is, but for electric water heater switch is not the same as a normal light switch, you will need to get a switch that meets the voltage requirement

Google now has automatic presence sensing based on device location, so you no longer need to manually tell Google you're leaving the house. You can set it up so that once all your phones get a certain distance away from your house, it will start a routine you choose.

basically that's call geofencing, only apply for lights and switches device type in google home. Google still has a lot to catch up in their routines.

Great content; keep it up (esp. with more reviews on affordable Tuya devices)! I think you can also switch off the plug to your phone charger when the charge is at 100%, but some elbow grease is required - use MacroDroid to detect battery level and then to operate the UI on Google Home.

Hi Alex, thank you very much for sharing, I am looking through online shops to buy the smart plugs, but I see there are versions 10A and 16A, I am a little confused which I should buy for singapore usage. Can u please advise on this?
@AlexTeo
@AlexTeo 3 жыл бұрын
best is to go with 13A, that's the singapore/uk standard. Recommend you to get tplink or ikea smart plugs
