Are you making any of these mistakes? There are lots of mistakes knitters make when creating shawl. I've rounded up the 5 biggest and most common mistakes that you should avoid to take your shawls homemade to handmade!
WATCH NEXT
Reacting to Your Shawl Knitting Projects: • Reacting to My Followe...
How to Knit the Easy Half Pi Shawl: • How to KNIT a HALF PI ...
Common mistakes shawl knitters make include: not checking the drape of the fabric, binding off or casting off too tightly, trying to knit a shawl on straight rather than circular needles, not using lifelines, and not blocking their finished shawl.
While these mistakes are common among beginner knitters. I find that many advanced beginner and intermediate knitters make some of these mistakes as well.

When it comes to needles, I'm the opposite. I knit everything with circular needles, I find regular ones hard to work with.

I've been knitting since I was 9 and I'm now a grandma...still knitting all of the time. One thing I love about knitting is that there is always more to learn, no matter how long you've been at it or how much you know. I have always done the bind off with a larger needle, but have never bothered to learn the stretchy bind off that you demonstrated here even though I'd heard of it. It is easier than I had realized. I'll definitely remember it and use it. Thanks for this and your other very helpful videos!

I love your videos and I always come away with some good tips. I have never used a life line for lace knitting, but I do use stitch markers. I place one at the end of every repeat then I read my work and make sure the stitch count and pattern are correct as I go along. This has worked for me for years and it might work for some of your followers.

One thing I like to do when I'm making a lifeline is to use yarn/thread that is much smaller than the weight of yarn I'm using. Otherwise I feel like there's a big gap when I pull out the lifeline. It may be all in my head, but still, it's there, I'm telling you! lol Also, a great tip I've heard for airplane travel is that you can use dental floss as a lifeline. The bonus is that the "cutter" part of the dental floss container can be used to cut your yarn too. Really helpful tip if you're worried your scissors will get confiscated.

If you use an interchangeable circular needle you can insert the lifeline into the t-pin hole in Chiaogoo or most brands (or the split cable on Addi’s brand) . You just tie a thin contrasting yarn into the t-pin hole the length of the width and knit across, remember if you have markers they must be the type that open. Very good tips, and definitely block all shawls and most hand knits.

I always bind off super loose on shawls. I make sure I don't run out of yarn by weighing my yarn when I'm getting close to the end. Figuring out how many grams I'm using per row, then leave double that amount, or just under. For binding off. Another thing I try to do when binding off a shawl is to do it all in one go. I find by not putting the project down its easier to maintain consistent tension for the bind off. Your idea of using a larger needle is a good one. I never thought of that! I had NO idea ppl tried to knit shawls on straight needles. I don't think I even own a pair of those anymore. I knit everything on circular needles.

Great tips! Circular needles were a game changer for me. I can’t imagine knitting anything except maybe a dishcloth on straights. I love the stretchy bind off too! Lifelines are a lifesaver!! My teacher told me about them about 8 years ago and I’ve used them ever since, especially with lace. I’ve been knitting and crocheting for years and never knew about lifelines. This video is sure to help many knitters! Thanks for sharing!🌸🌺

I put in my lifeline and 'accidentally' ran it through the markers. It was a fortuitous mistake. It forced me to drop those markers and replace them with new ones on the next round. The light went on!!! When putting in a lifeline run it through any markers on the needles. Replace them with new markers as you knit the next round dropping the originals. If you need to frog back to the lifeline your markers are already in place. No need to figure out where they should go. Hope it helps.

Was always scared and intimidated by circular needles but after taking my time I now am using two circular needles in the same project and if there is a slight “gap” between the stitches it disappears when you finish the row Try picking up a few stitches each side if the ‘gap” on every row to ‘spread” the load My project is almost 7 hundred stitches and these are too many for one needle Also place a new circular needle into hot water and it “ unwinds” Long message but I hope it helps

I hate circular needles, I don't care what anyone says. I've had a set since the early 70's and about 5 years ago I realized, I hate them. I was knitting a sweater from cotton & alpaca yarn, and my stitches were coming out with gaps and unevenness, very frustrating, and a problem I never have. I switched to straight bamboo needles and the work evened out immediately. I also dislike wrestling with the cables. It's just extra work that you don't need.
