When my mom sent out my bridal shower invitations she included a recipe card and requested that everyone write down their favorite recipe and attach it to one non perishable ingredient for the recipe. It was a double win. I now have handwritten recipes from many relatives that have since passed in the 23 years since I was married and most people brought a spice that was in their recipe so I had a great starting point for the spice section of my pantry.

You can also coat pieces of any protein in cornstarch slurry or cornstarch powder. Powder makes the meat extra crunchy (a lighter crispy than traditional breading). Cornstarch slurry is a common technique from Chinese cooking called silking or something which just keeps any cut of meat juicy and very tender during stir fry

When I moved into my first home, my mother-in-law gave us a huge box of basic pantry items. Pretty much everything on this list plus other things that will most likely be in your other video (canned tomatoes, vegetables, rice, pasta etc). It was a great housewarming gift and so helpful. PS - you can use flour as a thickener if you don't have corn starch

I check the Hispanic section for spices before I go to the spice aisle. Bay leaves and cumin are so much cheaper there. Bay is often the "missing" flavor in dishes, so I'd put it in the first priority category too.

Great housewarming gift with all these items?! For about $40, and an Amazon box decorated with wrapping paper?! Oh YES! Also, a good reminder for all of us to stock our pantry with extras of all these items in case of another food shortage. Add yeast to this list! (well not for beginners starting out). Hard to come by and limited stock in 2020 for flour, yeast, pasta, beans, rice, and toilet paper! I hope we don't go back to that. I've been stocking up on canned goods and long shelf life items about $5 extra each week. Just a little at a time. By your fan comments, looks like this video was a win!

We just moved into a new apartment and didn’t have much on hand. It was definitely stressful budget wise to restock everything. I went to WinCo and got almost all of my spices from the bulk section and that saved me a ton! I also shopped some sales to help me save the most money.

Fun fact (I find such facts fun): the term 'seasoning' (and the often-confusing direction in recipes to 'season to taste') literally and historically refers ONLY to salt, which is a mineral. Pepper is a spice, and so is any aromatic flavouring derived from any part of a plant (root, stem, seed, flower, pod, bark), and herbs are specifically green leafy bits. Of course, we use the term seasoning now to describe any single or combination of salt, spice, herb, or condiment used to flavour food.

Mindy I absolutely love this video! My daughter who’s now 21 and a officially college Senior moved halfway across the country and moved into her first apartment last year. Well, I came along to help with the move. My part of it was helping her “adult” by teaching her how to properly stock her kitchen on a budget. I reminded her that inexpensive seasonings can help a meal go a long way when you don’t have much. Between Aldi and Walmart we killed it and she felt confident enough to start her journey. Videos like these are crucial for young people starting off. Hope to see more like it in the future.

I think you have grouped them really super smart. A person might not be able to buy boullion base or stock cubes, but if they already bought previous groups, they can kind of make it up, mixing oil, garlic, onion, salt, pepper and a bit of italian seasoning for example. If i were you, i would probably chuck away the corn starch (i don't use it almost at all) and I would replace it with some multi purpose meat seasoning such as taco / bbq or something like that. It could enrich soups or sauces and just work as an alternative to using italian seasoning. I would also drop the minced dried onion since you already have mentioned onion powder and fresh onion. I would instead go for somehing like herbes de provance or maybe thyme or dill. :D

Hi Mindy, very helpful video! I wanted to add that baking soda and vinegar are two of the most natural and safe items our ancestors relied on for cleaning and washing. I use no chemical based cleaners anymore, and almost exclusively use baking soda and vinegar. Vinegar in the dishwasher will keep glassware shiny, a combo of vinegar and baking soda down the sink drain clean and freshen that, plus they work well cleaning the toilet too! To shine chrome, or stainless steel, rubbing alcohol is excellent.

Very helpful! Being a single person household I honestly don't cook that much and I have been slowly replacing some items that I know will lose their potency over time like baking powder. I think it is great for someone starting out who doesn't really have an idea of what to get to build a pantry. I think you doing a pantry tour or pantry video like you mentioned would be a great idea and quite helpful for people. One thing that I like to keep in my kitchen is a spare bottle of fat free Italian salad dressing. It makes a great marinade over chicken if I want to just throw some chicken breast in the oven or even if I just want to marinate some and then put them on the indoor George Foreman type grill. It adds quite a bit of flavor and if you do the fat free version in a store brand it's pretty inexpensive, especially if you watch the sales and buy a couple of bottles at a time. Another great video Mindy! Oh I'm in Nebraska and we've been having quite a few thunderstorms⛈️⚡ for the past couple weeks or so. But it is in the 90's today.🥵

Hahaha - Mindy I’ve been cooking for 40 years and you reminded me of something basic. I made pasta last night that was kinda blah. I forgot to salt the water so the whole thing was blah. Added salt today to the leftovers and voila! Tasty. I don’t add much salt because of health but salt is ok if you aren’t using a lot of processed ingredients. If you are, you have to watch your sodium content overall. For that reason, I buy the low sodium soy sauce. It has enough flavour without all the sodium. Thanks for your videos. I think your teach a person to fish is very important right now. I eat most meals at home but that’s unusual, I know.

I spend a fortune on spices, cinnamon in particular. I shop through Penzey's, because their spices (particularly cinnamon) are a whole different level. Except for garlic and onion powder. Those are pretty standard wherever you go. But lawd, the amount I spend on cinnamon alone is insane. It's the one area where I'm absurdly boujie.

They never include all the spices and oils which can be the most expensive parts of the meals if your not savvy. You can't assume a newbie has any of these things. It's great that you helped folks get their pantry stocked first.

This is such a great informative video. Would have loved to have known that information when I was first married. I knew nothing about cooking. I got ketchup first thing and literally had to learn it all. I know this will help young people like I was

Great comprehensive list. Loved mentioning that condiments have other uses than just topping a burger haha! Also, the cost of eggs is crazy right now.

I will buy a small amounts of spices at winco, out of the bulk bins you can buy a really small bit and I remember one time buying cumin that cost me 13 cents that lasted several recipes. Saves so much $$

Great video! If you're new to cooking & not sure if you'll want to commit to using seasonings again the premixed packets at Walmart for taco is .38, chilli .74, brown gravy mix .32. Fajita .62, same thing with marinades, etc. Baking mixes are another one where they're multipurpose and you don't have to purchase multiple items.

Not everyone can afford $5/ week ( $20/ month ) however, for anyone who needs it foodbanks are an option to provide stock up items. They often have seasonings, Baking supplies in additional to canned foods and one ingredient foods.

Great video...I must get some parsley for my spice cupboard and onion powder, I have all the other spices you mentioned plus more. My go to spices though are dried oregano, Italian seasoning, paprika, garlic powder, chili powder, fresh ground black pepper and pink Himalayan salt. I use very little salt when seasoning. There is so much sodium in so many things. I watch my sodium intake. So I literally will only put in a pinch of salt when a recipe calls for salt. I actually get all my spices from our local health food store. They are reasonably priced equivalent or less to the grocery store and they are super fresh. When cooking with oil I use a non-gmo avocado oil. It has a higher smoke point than olive oil but the same healthy fat as olive oil. I know u are doing a budget friendly video but oil is some thing I don't skimp on. I use the avocado oil in baking as well. It doesn't have a strong taste. Grape seed oil is also a good cooking oil again a high smoke point and virtually no flavour. I never use vegetable oil because it is derived from palm, soybean (highly genetically modified), canola, peanut etc. They are not really healthy oils. So I stay away from them.
