I felt in the mood to watch some old videos. It may be time to update this video. Ancestry has added some features to the 'side' view (I call it the family view). They now have arrows so you can see if siblings have children, you have arrows on the side to see if the 'upper' row of ancestors have siblings. There is even a toggle for other spouses if you want that view (though it does not give you an arrow to search through children of the alternate spouse. Adding in that they have Thrulines icons if you have a kit activated there are some new things to talk about. I do love the fan chart and I think it would be an awesome chart when working with DNA/Thrulines. I wish RM had it or at least more than just FS. I typically work with the family view in RM, but currently am working on a project that the descendent list on RM is my go-to view at the moment.

@@FamilyHistoryFanatics yeah, but I don't think all of them need to have the orginal version gone either. I sometimes like seeing the old way things looked. But some need updated because unless someone is like me are they going to scroll to the end of your video playlist to see the older videos? :) What we do when we are bored on a Monday morning when the kids are home and the library is closed!

@@FamilyHistoryFanatics I am helping my aunts husband, he is waiting on his Ancestry-DNA result. His stepfather adopted him and he is not 100% sure that his maternal grandfather is correct. On his mothers birth record it is "father unknown". But the man he called grandpa was a witness at the christening and married the grandmother 7 years later. He was only 16 when he maybe was a father. So I have done 2 trees for him on Ancestry.
@FamilyHistoryFanatics

That can be very complicated. I hope the bow tie can help things out a bit. That is unless there is tree collapse (folks marrying their closer relations). Good luck.

I would love to watch a new vid about pros and cons of those charts! Pedigree chart and fan chart can help you identify the generations and your ancestors, while omit the siblings and cousins. All-in-one chart is a bit dense and crowded, but you can see all your people at once. The fan chart with all the posibilities (change the color by origin or the information attached to every person) is great!

That's a great suggestion. I'm not sure when I can get to it.

Family tree charts look great and I want to make one but there's a small problem. Most charts seem to show direct parents and does not branch off into other members like cousins, uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews. My family is quite large and we have a lot of different surnames and complex ties. My family is also still close but some are now dying and others are over 80 so I would like to start soon but still have no idea if a specific cart will work for me. My nan tracked her family tree back a few hundred years by travelling to different churches in Britain. My other side tracks back to German/Poland. Each member had multiple children and I am basically the youngest or the youngest of the youngest on both sides of the family so most of my cousins, niece and nephews are a lot older than me. Anyway to cut this short how am I suppose to track or even begin to document a complex tree like mine which I want to show all family members including the ones who branch off to places like Canada and Australia. I guess something like that last method looks better in information terms but still missing something

This sounds so easy, but I’ve used two or three genealogy sites that do not even provision for divorcees 😅 in todays society it’s “normal” for certain trees to have numerous branches (step- & blood-) - difficult to build my family tree with these short comings.

I don't like the vertical veiw either, it is so easy to get lost. Though it does have it's place. I love the fan view as well, though I like to use it for dna. (My favorite view is the family group.)

You might not like the second chart, but I love it, because it makes it easier to find your DNA cousins. It is so easy to chose the wrong people before the 1950 census, but DNA doesn't lie.

No DNA tests will take you down to the city level. Some will get you close on the continental level, but few to the country level as many countries intermixed. DNA + paper trail genealogy is the best bet.

What is the best free website to build a family tree from scratch (not uploading a GEDCOM) where the branches do not minimumize/collapse, allowing you to view the entire tree as you scroll?
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics 2 жыл бұрын
I don't know that any tree truly lets you see the entire tree as you scroll as that's a massive amount of data to pull from a database. What are you trying to see? As for best free website to build a family tree. There are really only 2 websites that are free to build a family tree of significant size - WikiTree and FamilySearch. However, they are collaborative platforms meaning others can edit your family tree (for good or ill).

@@FamilyHistoryFanatics Family Search I know collapses branches. I would assume Wki does as well. I am actually attempting to create a business organizational chart, but seeing as it's the same format, I was hoping I could pull from my genealogy resources to do so.

My name as default and the chart started from me i the Fan chart. How to change that to my greatdad?
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics 3 жыл бұрын
It all depends on which program you're using. On FamilySearch, you can hover over the person you want to be at the center spot, and then there will be an icon to move the fan chart to that person. On other platforms, you click on a person on the fan chart and then you click another icon to see their family tree.

1:30: That family tree structure was developed by Geni. MyHeritage co-opted it after it acquired Geni. It displays portraits by default. 2:53: Oh, I wish that Geni had that descendancy chart! 3:10: Geni has a third-party option to generate a fan chart. It isn’t as robust as FamilySearch’s fan chart.

I don't use Geni often as doesn't have records to link to. I know there are work arounds. Keep the Geni. Comments coming to others can learn about what I don't use.
