I like what you said about the plateau and how the learning process works. It's so true that we see those sudden jumps only after a long time being "the same." Too many people say the same thing, that things start to click and come together. Your brain is always working, even if you can't sense it at the time.

I’ve been a Wadoryu student for 10 years and progressed to 1st Kyu. It’s changed my life for the better and want to try for Dan Grade this year but I’m really tall and muscular. My Sensei tells me I need to move faster and be sharper, but it feels impossible for me. Even my fastest moves are slower than dan Grade standard....any advice?
@AndoMierzwa
@AndoMierzwa 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul! Just saw this. You've been progressing for 10 years and NOW you're suddenly not good enough to advance? Or have you gotten slower recently? Of course, I haven't seen you move and I don't know your teacher, so it's not for me to judge. But I will point out that Karate is more than a belt. You train to better yourself and your skills. As long as you're doing that, forget the belt. Especially if it's impossible for you to satisfy your teacher! Just train!

Oh snap. I've been a member of a dojo for over 2 years now, and for the first year and a half was attending every single day every class I could, working out and learning and practicing etc. Then I hit the wall- I knew most of the drills that we were going to be doing, I knew what I was good and bad at, and I reasonably knew my limits and abilities, so I got bored. When I was bored attendance dropped dramatically. Tonight was the first night of me coming in in well over 3 months, and I learned how much my body had degraded in the time away: technique was still there, but the cardiovascular fitness to keep my breath and stay active for longer just wasn't there at all. This video helped out amazingly with point number 5. I think it may be a while before I stop attending again.

Thank you for the great suggestion Sensei Ando. You really got me there laughing on the "What If.." scenario. When i was teaching a class about Escrima and disarms, got this guy ruining everyone trainings by forcing his "what if" idea throughout the lesson. Had to kick him out. How to handle the persistant one? Thank you again, Sensei!

You're not alone dealing with the What If Guy. I'd say it sounds like you made the right call. Creating a positive, productive learning environment is our sacred duty... let no one tear it asunder! Thanks for the comment, sir!

I especially love the short: "sometimes you might think you're actually getting worse," because it's so true and yet rarely mentioned. The fact is, there are a lot of reasons why you sometimes think that you are getting worse, but it's rarely true. It could be some skewed type of nostalgia, depression, or simply the fact that some people got better, i.e. had the plateau jump at a different time than you. Consistency, sparring, and open-mindedness towards other techniques make sure that you aren't actually getting worse, so as long as you keep going to the gym/dojo, everything will be fine. :)

Awesome tips! I have one issue though, Sensei. I live in Austin, TX, and everyone just LOVES LOVES LOVES to hear themselves talk. The solution in this town has been to turn martial arts classes into cardio classes! (kidding. sort of.)

For self-defense, because the attackers choose victims based on looks. For example, how to fix your Posture.(walking, sitting ...)
