I’m discerning a 3rd order and have been praying the hours for about a month now. I love it. It ties your whole day and life into the liturgy. I don’t do every hour but I do the readings, laudes, vespers, and compline. Highly recommend! My day doesn’t feel complete anymore without it!

Thank you, Father, for this very timely reminder of the weaknesses of satan and the power of our guardian angels when we ask for the help of our guardian angel. When I learned that a guardian angel belongs to one person and when the person dies, your guardian angel does not get reassigned to another person, it became very clear that they are a great gift from God! I appreciate all of your talks and await “if you Believed Moses 2.”

Five good points to always keep in mind. Point four is one I always struggle with and constantly have to remind myself that God allows evil to bring forth some good. Hard to comprehend at times. Thanks for bringing up the help we receive from our Guardian Angel. I've been neglecting him lately. Got to fix that. Happy 106th anniversary of the Miracle of Sun. Immaculate Heart of Mary pray for us. God bless. Stay strong.

About Compline - the beauty and love expressed in the chants cannot be resisted no matter how miserable or scared and alone one is. For that matter even being stupid and having a hard time keeping up, is not an obstacle as in other situations. Thank you for this beautiful talk, Fr. M. One day I hope you have time to give us a talk about Chant. ( Or is it even explainable in words?)

(For the below question, until Vatican II, the Divine Office was prayed integrally -- all the hours, every day, by every cleric, under pain of grave sin. That is how traddie priests pray the Office (including myself). The 'Liturgy of the Hours' (novus ordo) is something very different; Prime abolished, and two hours made optional, and all of them diluted.

Comprehensive but compact, it is well articulated and thoughtful while thought provoking. Thank you Father! I knew Satan could not read your mind, but just now considered, is this also why we must use words sparingly, and always for the glory of God. And also why Mary "pondered these things in her heart" never speaking them aloud? I've heard it said though, when you make the sign of the cross before and after any oral prayers to Heaven, that this binds your words from satan. I don't know where I heard it though, if it is true or not - can you confirm Catholic teaching? God bless you and your work. 3 Ave's for you.

On the point of Satan not knowing the future. I believe that Buddhism was his attempt to preempt the subvert the Gospel, which he knew it was coming but didn't have any direct knowledge of how, while Islam was his attempt to sabotage the Gospel after he knew what it entailed exactly. He's really cunning has a lot of knowledge and makes pretty good educated guesses, but in the end he doesn't really know anymore than anyone else about what will actually happen.

Also Fr. Mawdsley, I would respectfully suggest you read some of Fr. Ripperger’s books on Spiritual Warfare for an even greater clarity about what Satan may or may not know. If it’s true, his original purpose was to illuminate the intellect of Mary and he fell because of the knowledge he was given of her interior life pursuant to the role he was created to play and, so, saw just how much, greater she was than himself, then he will may very well have known about the incarnation before it occurred.
@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM
@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM 9 ай бұрын
I am wary of too much 'knowledge' about angels, and especially demons (though I respect Fr Ripperger knows what he is talking about). Do you have any references for that idea of Lucifer's purpose? While it is OK to speculate, that sounds extravagant. I cannot think of any Church Fathers or scholastics who would give all those details. It might have come later in someone's devotions, but it does not make sense to me. In any case, here is a footnote from "Crushing satan's head", which I think outlines safe speculation which is not required dogma. "Whereas St Ambrose, St Anselm and St Thomas favoured the teaching that God became incarnate in order to redeem man from sin, Bl Duns Scotus took the position that God would have become incarnate whether or not man sinned. He taught that God’s very first decree in relation to Creation was the universal primacy of Jesus Christ. The Virgin Mary, as Jesus’ Mother, is raised by the fullness of grace above all other creatures. All this is prior to sin or redemption. Followers of Scotus speculated that the specific realisation that a woman would be Queen of Angels provoked Lucifer to rebel. He might have willingly bowed to God made Man (though it is not sure he knew this profundity in God’s Plan), but he was not willing to serve a human creature, given humans were by nature lower than angels (cf. Ps 8:6). The devil’s refusal to freely subject himself to the Woman is made explicit in the works of the Venerable Mary of Ágreda and St Maximilian Kolbe."

My house has been blessed only once. There aren't enough priests to perform an annual house blessing for everyone. I do actually pray compline from the traditional Catholic breviary every night. There is a group of sedevacantist priests who keep the pre-1955 breviary, available for a nominal subscription fee, on their website. I have a subscription to it and say compline in both Latin and English every night. I am not worried about satan. He deserves to be crushed. He has inspired great evil both in my life as a child and in my marriage as an adult. To say that I hate him is an understatement.

I like listening to you, a lot of what you say is very insitfull, I would like to hear you give a talk on confession and how that differs from the penitentiary right of the mass, where we call to mind our sins and the priest gives a general absolution in preparation to celebrate the sacred mysteries, (recieving the lord in the blessed sacrament ), most priest say atheist confession once a month, but if there are no serious (mortal. Sin) sin, then in not the penitentiary rite of the mass sufficient. I look forward to hearing what you have to say. Thank you
@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM
@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM 9 ай бұрын
Going to a priest to make sacramental Confession once each month is ideal (whether one has mortal sin on one's conscience or not). Jesus and Mary show us this with the First Friday and First Saturday devotions. If one has sinned mortally, one can go more often, as needed. If one has not sinned mortally, once a month is fine. For a religious or seminarian or priest, then every two weeks is ideal. To go more often than this (laity or clerics) is permissible but not always advisable. As you mention, the absolution in Holy Mass, especially when there is a second Confiteor prior to the distribution of Holy Communion (or at the beginning of Mass in the 1962 rites), is powerful in remitting all venial sins, according as one is contrite. In general, venial sins may be remitted by prayer, almsgiving and penances. Mortal sin requires going to Sacramental Confession. The advantage of going monthly to Confession even for venial sin only, is that by articulating our sins to a priest, we become more aware of what they are, because we should name them (although it is not strictly necessary for venial sins). And we get an idea of which sins persist. And we have a chance to receive advice from the priest. And the Sacrament is gives great graces. Hope this helps.

@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM

Yes, he can. But it is better with a priest who can bless the incense. But as priests might be very busy in the Epiphany Octave (travelling from home to home), then it might be needful to alternate years with him coming or the head of the household leading a similar blessing.

Father if the devil can't read our mind how is he so good at putting the wrong thoughts at the right time in our minds?
@tco13v
@tco13v 7 ай бұрын
Temptation comes from the world, from the Devil and from our own broken nature which is inclined to sin (concupiscence). The Devil knows a lot about us as demons observe us to find weaknesses to exploit. It might feel your mind is being read but it's not true at all. If the Devil could read minds it would be easy for him to tempt everyone enough away from God.

@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM
@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM 9 ай бұрын
The traditional blessing for holy water (such as is used for the Asperges before a sung Sunday Mass) includes prayers of exorcism and blessing for both the salt and the water. Stronger prayers are used for Epiphany and Easter water. All three (obviously) are very good. I don't know what the novus prayers are.

The Devil cannot read our minds, but our Guardian Angel can, correct?
@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM
@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM 9 ай бұрын
I don't think our Guardian Angel can read our mind. But they know us very well, better than any of our family or friends know us (they have been watching over us constantly). They 'hear' the prayers we address to them, and it may well be that they hear literally all of our prayers, spoken or unspoken, by God's arrangement. They communicate with us such inspirations as we might assume are 'intuition'. I mean, often do we know not where thoughts come from. Perhaps these are sometimes spoken to us by the angels. Obviously some people are more in tune than others, some more deaf than others. A few saints (like St Francesca of Rome) had clear apprehension of guardian angels. But most of us are not like this, perhaps because some people would get puffed up if they imagine their own ideas come from angels, and others would be despondent if they thought they were missing out. So God keeps it all very subtle, and that evidently works best.

Most common mistake people make is they overestimate their ability to resist temptation. This is like going to a bar and think you can resist drinking and a pretty woman who looks and smiles at you. You may succeed with much sweating but why be there to begin with? Life in this world is fulll of pits and traps set by God's enemy which is why we need God and stay close to him. The Devil is like a ferocious animal but chained. Step into his reach and you will get caught. Stay clear of him in Jesus name and you are safe, assuredly.

Something I still have not understood. The demons can't know our thoughts. But if we were to pray silently to our guardian angels or to one of the three archangels0, how do our guardian angels or that archangel know our thoughts and carry our prayers to God. And how do our guardian angels know when we sin in thought? Is it because God allows our guardian angel this power on account of their office? Or did the demons lose this faculty when they fell?

Those are good questions, and I don't know the answer to them either. I am reminded, however, of Hebrews 12:22-24 which tells us that in Christ, we "have come to...innumerable numbers of angels." My guess would be that because of their office God gives them the power to hear our mental prayer.

When you invoke your angel, or a saint, (or heaven forbid, a demon) you grant them access by calling upon them. Now I suspect there is more to what your guardian angel has been given access to as well, but what precisely, I couldn't say.

3:35 when you say “they belong to God”, do you mean that in the Baptismal reality, or as a creature of God?

I mean as a creature of God, so that includes all humans. Baptism brings us into His household as children of God.

This is the first time I have seen a Bible translation of Job 2:9 say , “ ….bless God and die.” I have only ever seen “ curse God and die. “ Isn’t this quiet a contradiction? What Bible version are you showing please?

This is from the Vulgate ("Benedic") and Douay-Rheims ("bless"). The LXX has "say any word to God" (εἰπόν τι ῥῆμα εἰς κύριον). The Hebrew has "curse" (בָּרֵךְ ... minus the leftermost two dots). I forget the story behind the changes, but it is something to do with a reluctance to read out (or even write down) the words "Curse God". And so it was renedered as "bless", but 'everyone' was supposed to know what was meant by the context and general good teaching. Alas, the good teaching might be lacking! Corrections / further information etc very welcome from contributors here.

Father, have you considered opening a channel in Spanish and using one of those AI to dub your videos into Spanish? My parents don't know other language than Spanish, and it would serve well your content getting out there in other languages.

I don't mind anyone copying / dubbing / posting the videos (though an attribution to this channel would be appreciated)... but I am at my limit of spending too much time at the computer. Sorry I cannot help.

Satan is Lucifer and the demons are the fallen angels. Is that correct? Do Satan and the demons roam the earth? Will Satan and the demons be cast into hell at the last battle? Will they occupy a separate place in hell from the damned souls? Satan won’t “rule” the damned souls. Is that correct?

Satan lost his name Lucifer when he rebelled against God. He is no longer known as Lucifer, only in regard to before his fall.

@@debbieramsey8933 Right. I was just stating that the one known as Satan is the former Lucifer.

I am not sure enough about these things to say much. But I am pretty sure you are right that satan will not "rule in hell" (a mistake by Milton). He will be despised there by every demon and human, in the deepest and darkest part of hell, I reckon utterly isolated (he will not even have the company of torturers to console him). I might be wrong.

Satan can be anywhere, but NOT everywhere. He is not God. He is not the equal of Jesus. He is the Evil Equivalent of Saint Michael, the Archangel.
