to break my habit and addiction of impulse spending, i started going to the library. walking out with a stack of 15 books gives me that rush of getting something new and treating myself without the buyers remorse. it literally does not matter if you read them or not because it costs $0. just return them in two weeks and treat yourself to a new stack

The other day I had the funniest moment with a coworker friend. She asked if I wanted to go shopping with her over the weekend and I said, "No sorry I don't need any clothes." and she was like "why does that mean you can't go shopping?" It took me so long to explain that if I go I will buy crap I don't need or really want... but it made me realize how far I've come with curbing my spending and shopping intentionally! Was kind of a funny moment but made me very proud of myself.

It’s the best way to go. Buy when you need something like truly need it. With clothes for me it’s easy my weak spot are handbags. I love handbags however I really try to buy them sporadically even me being someone who only buys contemporary designer. Now there is nothing wrong going to the mall to just do window shopping without buying nothing and go get a coffee and latter going dinner. I do that with some of my friends, we go to have dinner and coffee but before that most times I go with her to the stores and most times she leaves with a shopping bag. She is not a crazy spender she just likes to buy something before we go dinner or lunch. Nothing wrong going with your friends shopping even if you don’t do any shopping. Just go for the fun ride

That's a wonderful milestone to celebrate on your journey to responsible spending! It's a shame that you had to forgo spending time with a friend though (unless you secretly thought it would be awkward 😉). I know some alcoholics who avoid parties, cookouts, bars, etc., because they don't trust themselves around liquor. They miss the comraderie, but alcohol still has hold over them. I know others who can be around it and are neutral, and still others who actually are repulsed by the scent. Same with ex-cigarette smokers. I hope you get to the point where shopping and purchases don't trigger much of an emotional response, other than "yay, I can cross that off my list!" For me, whenever I see "HURRY! SALE ENDS SOON!" I immediately downshift instead. When you feel rushed, you aren't being considerate of your future self, who will most likely feel regretful about the purchase. Another thing I do is keep a running list of things I would like to purchase, like, a new raincoat, or, replacement water filters., so when I go out to the mall I'm focused on what I need, not on what would maybe be nice to own. That way, I get a little endorphin boost when I make the purchase, and another one when I get home because I can cross it off my list. Plus, no regrets - instead I get a feeling that I'm making progress! One more thing you can do is have a designated splurge item for when you go shopping with someone who is in "misery loves company" mode. Choose items that can be given away as gifts, like, scarves or gloves or pillows, or something she doesn't know you splurge on regularly, like fresh flowers, high-end chocolate or imported coffee. That way you're being diplomatic with a weaker friend, and you're not blowing your budget unnecessarily. Basically, have a plan before you go out. It gets to the point where you feel really healthy at the end of your shopping trips! Best of luck!

@@carbine090909 that's me too! I literally had to reluctantly pull myself away a few days ago from an outlet store where some pretty handbags were finally in a better price range for me but none of the options were quite perfect for what I need. I was very sad, but knew it was the right choice *because* of how pressured I felt. Also, I love that idea of keeping a list of the things you actively need. I only keep that list in my head but I do forget what they are at times, lol

The outfit repeater thing is just obnoxious. Traditionally, Japanese women's magazines do "style it different ways" spread of items to show that that they can fit into a wardrobe and be flexible. I really wish that there was more of that energy in American media, especially from influencers (beyond OMG Kate Middleton wore the same coat twice).
@mabelvonsmolcat
@mabelvonsmolcat 2 жыл бұрын
This used to be normal in American magazines as well. They would have a months worth of outfits, using the same 6-8 items. But, that seems to have been phased out. Actually, I don’t know anybody who subscribes to printed magazines anymore (I’m gen x, if that matters). They may very well still have this in some printed magazines.

Do a video about the phenomena of people pretending to be rich. That topic really fascinates me I’d say that it is appropriate to treat yourself to a small item once per month as it does help with morale, BUT ONLY if you don’t have any debts that needs to be paid and the item’s price tag is within your budget

This would be great. I associate with "genuine money" carrying designer bags, and then I see others in the same circle who I know are limited in their means (moreso than me) and are also rocking designer bags, and I think "hang on I'm here with my $150 'splurge bag' that I wear everywhere and you're rocking a new designer piece, how is this possible". Different priorities. Different debt levels. Okay. And the bags do look nice! I'd just personally struggle to justify it. I am interested for a Chelsea deep dive.

I always thought that stigma was about lack of creativity rather than having too few items. Like you're not supposed to wear the exact same combination of items several times a week or even more than once or twice a month because it looks boring and like you're not "putting in effort". I always thought of it as some standard that really fashionable people have but the rest of us don't really care and probably would never notice.

It might sound ridiculous, it IS!! But that’s my case. I didn’t spend a lot, but I was buying items that didn’t help me be a better person (as you say: I was the same person, with just more luxury items in my closet). It's truly bonkers our attitude towards clothing. The average person in the west had between 5-10 outfits which they made LAST. Clothing was routinely handed down through the generations and made over to match current fashions without wasting precious fabric. Clothing was also proportionally much more expensive to produce and buy; our modern fast fashion is almost entirely down to slave or at least exploitative labor and cheap materials. /rant (this takes up SO much space in my head...)
@ellencoleman4604

I'll add to this - what annoys me is that imo you can even make buying clothes a hobby without being wasteful about it. I'm someone who likes clothes and likes having lots of outfits to choose from. I wouldn't be happy with just 10, but I still consider everything I buy a long-term investment and everything in my large wardrobe gets worn. I also think it's ok to make buying mistakes if you learn from them, but unfortunately a lot of people don't seem to take the time to do that. It's also still ok to be spontaneous if you use a charity shop - not really a downside to it in that scenario. And of course you can try on things and return them! It's actually really fun to do, I don't understand why hauls don't take this approach? Just play out a romcom makeover scene, it's way more interesting to watch!

The saddest part of this is that even if you want to sew your own clothes, the fabrics that are commonly available in shops now are such poor quality AND even if you spend what I think of as a hefty amount of money on an item of clothing, eg $140 for a day dress, there’s no guarantee that it’s a quality made product that will last.

Amazing video, thank you Chelsea . Also, as a 35 yo I feel kind of disconnected from this tiktok and Instagram influencer culture, crazy hauls, etc. and I’m kind of relieved it was not really a thing when I was in my teens and early 20s . Or maybe I just live under a rock, lol. But I do feel bad for today’s teens who are basically born into it.

I'm almost 40, and I agree that it must be hard to be 20-something now and have social media constantly implying to you that you are or could be "a big deal," and that you should pursue fame or notoriety alongside or instead of pursuing who you want to be. Of course, it's easy for me to say, I have a lot of things figured out about myself that few 20-somethings understand yet (experience almost makes up for the aches and pains y'all!), and one always assumes one knows more than they do, and we all often imagine we grew up in superior or ideal conditions. Maybe the social media overload will prod more modern younger people toward greater self-perspective and authenticity. I certainly hope so.

Pardon me to comment on this lovely madams. What you are saying is right in my opinion. There is pressure (visible or invisible) from media social and their peers, whenever they follow the same age influencer, celebrities or friends. The pressure to show they also get everything right and not fall behind, from their ability to buy whatever they want, their life (single or married), etc. It... Make some of them goes into over-consumpsion (on things or food including hauls), while also pushing them to debts. Loads of debts. I mean i know there is unavoided debts like student loan or loan to buy house, but the pressure is literaly throwing the mentally not matured young people to deeper pits. On... Both debts and unhealthy mental health.

I try not to be mean, but when someone my age tells me they have a Tik Tok account, it's hard not to judge them for it. Are they a paedo? Do they have a 5 second attention span? Do they have horrible taste in comedy? Are they mentally immature?

I feel one major side effect of constantly consuming (esp clothes for me ) is that you appreciate each Item you receive or buy way less as it just feels normal. It’s definitely easier said than done and I know it will take a collective effort to lower the popularity of hauls, but these videos do so well because we give them that power and attention. I occasionally watch book hauls and they don't have all the same negative underpinnings as clothing or makeup hauls but they can cause stress and FOMO. And bookstores are starting to lean into that culture as well. There's a peer pressure in some parts of the reading community to read a crap ton of books every month/year, which leads to people speedreading and not taking time to savor or enjoy reading because they're always thinking about their endless TBR list. I'm not so much afraid of being seen in the same outfit twice as I am afraid that wearing/washing a piece of clothing too often will deteriorate it to the point it's unwearable. Shirts that I've had for only 2 months already have holes all over them.

Great video! :) This helps me to not buy things I don't need: 1. I deleted ALL shopping apps from my phone, so I don't get tempted to "have a look" when I get bored 2. I unfollwed influencers who practice a lifestyle of overconsumption and brands that I like to not get tempted 3. I have a small closet so I divided my wardrobe into spring/summer and autumn/winter to have a better overlook. Every half a year I empty my entire closet and have a look at the garments and divide them into 3 piles (1. what I wore a lot, 2. Damaged or items that are not suitable to wear anymore, 3. Stuff I didn't wear). I will take pictures the garments of pile number one (usually around 25 items) and store the pictures on my phone, so I can look at them right before the next season to see what matches my current wardrobe if I see something that I like. Pile Nr 2 will be fixed and/or transferred to "clothes for paint jobs, gardening, the woods etc" or thrown away if they are too damaged. Pile number 3: I try to ask myself why I didn't wear it (bad weather, changes in size, I didn't like it anymore, no occasion). If there is a reason to keep it for the next season I will, if not I'll give it to friends, donate it or sell it online. This sounds like a lot of work, but it is usually a fun weekend/Sunday :-) 4. To stop me from compulsive buying I will sleep over an item for a couple of days (weeks if possible) and will have a look at my garment pictures and how it will fit in my wardrobe and if it is something that I will actually wear. I figured that in 90% of the cases I don't go back to purchase the item bc the initial spark vanished 5. I stopped buying memories when traveling and reduced it to one item max. 6. Before the season starts I will have a look at what I really need and set a budget. My birthday is in June, so I usually ask for one item as a birthday gift for my summer wardrobe/decorations/cosmetic etc and for Christmas for the winter season. I really like the idea of a capsule wardrobe and so far it works very well for me (in an extended version of around 25 items). I really like mood boards (I work in Marketing) so I like to display the pictures (you see I keep coming back to my pictures haha) of my current garments on a mood board and play with it by adding a new color that I like, shape and cut (usually for bottoms), textures (like wool, leather, cotton, jacquard), a new type of shoe and (this is my favorite) a new belt to spice up and modernize my closet for the next season. I follow a couple of capsule wardrobe influencers to get some inspiration :-) 7. I try to buy high quality and sustainable products and first have a look at second hand platforms (I have 2 brands which I really love, so these are usually my go to options). However I try to purchase 2-3 items that I really like and need, instead of 20 mediocre items. 8. I try to eliminate repetitive and expensive habits, like buying a coffee at the coffee shop before work (I have my coffee at home or put it in a tumbler), eating out every single day bc there was "no time" to prepare my lunch etc. 9. I safe 50% of the money that I don't spend on stuff that I don't need (usually a fixed sum each month at the beginning of the month) and put it in a separate account. I don't have a credit card or debit card for this account and it is reserved to spend it on a down payment for a house, my retirement, my future kids or whatever. The rest of the money I use for activities (memories): with my friends, traveling, maybe a new hobby, books etc. Maybe this is helpful for anyone :-)

Pop-culture-like elements such as single-use outfits found their way into the modern goth subculture. This really bothers me because the subculture itself was a branch from counter-culture in the rejection of just accepting societal standards. Outfits that would have typically be constructed of multiple layers and rotational items you wear until you can't anymore (then find a new way to utilize the items). Are marketed and sold online where depictions on social media give the impression that you need to constantly be buying top-tier items from brands like Killstar. It's such a bummer to see.

I’m in between sizes and I’ve been asking around for clothes from similar sized friends and family to see if ppl want to clean out their closets. I get such a high now when I get a “new” piece of clothing for zero money. I told myself I’m not spending any more money on clothing until I’m done losing weight because I wasted more than I’d like after my 1st 50lbs down and none of that fits anymore.

So many good points and insights. I have recently started watching a lot of home decor/vacation rental decor videos and have a noticed a lot of videos with titles about how to make your home look expensive. Really? Is this really what the goal of decorating your home should be? Thanks for another great video!

$500/month on luxury items? Fascinating! What was defined as luxury? Does it include services like professional hair coloring, out-of-network therapy sessions, gym memberships, house cleaning? Or was this just $500 worth of material luxury goods?

In any case, the concept of spending $500/month on anything nonessential is mind-boggling to me! When I'm a little more settled in my adult life, I can imagine have a budget of maybe $100/month on special items, but even that feels indulgent after the dedication I put in to getting debt free, lol I sure hope these folks begin to see the emptiness and overwhelm that comes from this habit. It's so freeing to finally buy only things you need and treating yourself once in a great while to something extra nice ☺

Loved this video. I have to say, that after being very careful about what I expose my self to on the internet, these haul videos, particurlarly the lux ones, only seem desperate and vulgar to me. I would not dream about flashing a brand for the sake of it. What does it say about a person? Are you so insecure that you feel you have to hide behind this logo? I. have good coats I`ve owned for 20 years. Also, thank god for channels like this one, and particurlarly the rants. As I`m norwegian, some of the more lokal money stuff does not relate to me, but so much else is helpful. Also I too am in a relationship with a Dyson vacuum cleaner and it gives my life meaning. Love your content, Chelsea. Would really apreciate stuff on brands that are more ethical. I`m wearing my old panties to shreads because I can not bear the thought of wearing garments with drops of blod on them from exploited hands.

Thank you Chelsea for your "vaccine" against mindless spending! I love your channel. I watch Bernadette Banner who is a fashion historian and makes most of her own clothing. She had a video where she said she really has maybe 4 outfits. She knows how to repair them and made most of them so knows the effort that went into so she won't throw them out for a new season. I wonder if bring back sewing would help?

Wow, how timely is this video! We were driving yesterday from one state to another and several times we passed these HUGE shopping centers. I found myself wondering how detrimental these places must be to someone who is a compulsive buyer or has a shopping addiction. They are the modern day casinos for people! I have also found myself deleting the people who's haul videos I used to enjoy. I'm on a new year's resolution (I'm great at keeping them) to adhere to a budget for our family and to increase our financial wealth. I was never someone who enjoyed shopping before, but found myself shopping more and more over time. Thank you for speaking such wisdom and I can't wait to see you hit the 1 million subscribers! Love your channel!! Cheers from California!

Some fashion KZfaqrs have said they continued to do haul videos because their viewers liked the distraction, which I can definitely understand. And at one point during the pandemic, videos of people trying on clothes were helpful since many shops still had closed fitting rooms, which made it hard for customers to try on clothes before purchasing. But yeah, a video of someone buying $1,000 worth of clothes from Shein where they don't get more detailed about the quality of the clothing beyond saying everything is cute is definitely pointless & tone-deaf.

Great video and great topic! You should continue to talk about this phenomenon. I personally love certain haul videos where the YTber is open and honest - for ex, “I look terrible in this, it’s going back!” Or it’s a wishlist item that they can finally tick off the list. And I personally prefer to see these items on real people much of my shopping is limited to online options and it’s a gamble that I don’t always want to risk. However, the massive consumption of goods expensive or otherwise is overwhelming and I understand the growing negative reaction to them. My only wish is that we were less harsh on the folks making these videos, as folks are starting to do YT full time in growing numbers and this is their way of earning an income and we start becoming more critical of ourselves and realize that their overconsumption is for entertainment purposes only. Our over consumption has real financial ramifications. In a similar vein, folks can consume higher end goods but it should be done in smaller quantities, that’s kind of the point. I buy an expensive bag, so I can wear it for years and years to come and it gets better with age. Not, let’s own 50 purses and 4 see the light of day. But that’s just my opinion 🤷🏽‍♀️.

The keeping up with friends thing is one I get. I don't feel the need to keep up in most senses, but frequently my friends and I will attend a 1/week free event and then, somehow, every time people will want to go out for dinner after. If I say "it's not in the budget" there's a friend (wonderful person, overly generous, needs to set their own boundaries esp in terms of finance) who will volunteer to cover us, and then "No, I didn't say we could /afford/ it, I said it wasn't in the budget, still love you guys but food at home is already paid for" becomes "oh, we were hoping to spend more time with you :( " and it becomes an unintentional guilt trip. >

I find it mind blowing that what others choose to do, has to affect you. Why does what others do e.g hauls have to stop just because you let it make you feel bad. It's their right and choice to make them, and your choice to watch them. People should not have to tip toe around others even with regards to hauls. If you feel bad about yourself regarding it, it's worth delving deeper into getting healed

My husband and I thrift and garage sale as a hobby. I'm starting a new thing, buying what I want/need for our house, kids, etc, then buying one or more extra items to ideally resell for the price of everything we bought that day or more. So today I spent around $26 at Goodwill on various things including a nice Crockpot. Trying to sell the Crock-Pot for $25 plus shipping to basically break even on the day. Stoked to find a way to make thrift shopping even more economic!

I’ve started rotating my clothes with capsules per season. Getting dressed is so much easier because everything fits and I’ve streamlined colours so I can mix and match easily. Also, I have a much better idea of what I have so I’m not tempted to re-buy items or purchase similar items to what I have. Also unsubscribed from YT creators who do hauls.

I remember about 12 years ago working at Ann Taylor on Valentines Day, and we were closing and this lady comes. She stays in the store up until an hour after we close because we have a policy of not kicking anyone out if they are in the store before we close. Everyone is upset because it’s Valentines Day and we all want to leave and she’s being a pain. She spends about $600; but comes back the following morning and returns EVERYTHING because she claims that we were rude!! Impulse buying at your finest!

Consumer culture has made it so easy to buy things that we’re all becoming addicted. The more we buy, the more we need to buy next time to get that same amount of (fleeting) gratification. And those who sell to us do it on purpose, no matter the negative impact on people and the planet. Sometimes I feel so sickened by it all and so anxious about the future that I wish we had some catastrophic event to force us all back into austerity. But then, not even a global pandemic worked :/

The only haul videos I continue to watch are by an Australian KZfaqr named Alex (PrettyPastelPlease). She is always incredibly transparent about whether she spent her own money, sponsorship money, or no money on a haul. She puts up the prices of each item and will comment on whether she actually thinks they're worth the amount they're priced at (watching her roast designer brands for having uncomfortable or shitty clothing while being extremely expensive has gotten me through this global panini). She even did a "vlogmas" style stint in December where she went exclusively to thrift stores to furnish/decorate her house. I really appreciate how realistic and forthright she is, even when she's sponsored by the brand she's doing the haul from.
