Tip #1 works, but it's not the best way to cut out text because it's destructive. Leave the text editable, select the text and the circle then go to pathfinder, press and hold the Alt key and click on the Exclude option. Doing it this way allows the text and shape to remain editable.

Although choosing typefaces is somewhat an opinion and up to the designer, there are some unwritten laws that come into play that I will be talking about in Sundays video, hopefully

Font selection is all about the look, feel and character of the typeface in relation to the content of the piece. Its a bit of an art form in itself. For example, if you're going for a corporate look, you might use Frutiger as opposed to say, a handwritten font like Marker Felt. Your best bet is to look at various examples of really good typography in annuals and books, like Print or Communication Arts design annuals, and scrutinize the type choices the designer made in terms of what they were trying to communicate. .

For the first one there is a much easier way. All you have to do, is put your text onto the background image, expand the text, select the text and background, and use the shape builder tool to delete the text by holding alt

Love the tutorial! Easy to follow. On the fourth effect, when I use the pen tool, I can't quite follow what you're doing to make the curved line, and my Ai doesn't have that path window at the top so I can make adjustments. Any tips? Thank you SO much for the help!

Hey thanks for commenting! What versions of Illustrator are you running? And by 'path window' do you mean the little box where I make the line / stroke thicker in the middle? Try going up to window>arrange>tracing and then make a line with your pen tool and select it, you may see the box at the top appear then..?

If you have CC then it should appear at the top I think because that is what I use :P It may be that your workspace setting needs refreshing or set to something like 'tracing' as I mentioned. Let me know if it doesn't work

Thanks. That menu is there before I start using the pen tool, but once I start using the pen tool, it changes to a different menu. I think my problem is that I've never use the pen tool and don't know what I'm doing. I can't make the line curved like you do. Off to do some more research and learning.

the first way, text cut into shape. does the background/bottom layer image have to meet a certain criteria for it to work? i have created a simple image and tried to cutting text into shapes but its not working

Try turning the top layer text into a compound path or shape. Do this by either going up to object, compound path and make, or open the pathfinder window, and click the top right flydown menu and click compound shape

I will help you out here; 1. get your text and go up to type create outlines 2. open the appearance window 3. double click the fill layer and add a colour fill 4. top right corner of the appearance window, add new stroke 5. drag the stroke below the fill layer, add a colour to it and increase stroke weight 6. add another stroke and drag that below and increase stroke weight 7. do this as many times as you wish 8. if your text has anomalies, ope n the stroke window and click rounded corners hope this helps

Expand gives you the choice to outline not just the stroke but the fill also. That is the only real difference

You need to bring the text to the very front of all layers. Then you need to outline the text and then use the minus front option after selecting BOTH thee circle and the text. That should work

Do you mean design a logo from scratch in Illustrator? Normally when I design a logo it takes several days, so I am not sure how that video would look. Or do you mean a tutorial on making a logo design?

Do you have ANY idea how to use PS text styles in AI? I cannot find any way to convert transfer text that has been edited with styles and not have it pixelated in AI. Thank you

E.g. There are styles for PS for formatting text. In this particular case, I have a candy cane text style. This would be a multi-example of my reference: www.freepik.com/free-psd/text-effects Trying to transfer the typed text to AI is proving difficult while I'm trying to setup some holiday ads.

I think the best thing to do is open it in Illustrator and then use the image trace function to convert it into a vector? If it is an actual font, I'm not sure you can actually use it in Ai as a font to type out text I'm afraid..

You cannot control the amount of strokes you want to add as well as the weight with the offset tool, I think? And there are many different ways to do the same thing in all Adobe programs
