Anybody else has that eerie feeling of being into social media so much? It has become a lifestyle, a life choice. It's like you don't realize it is shaping your life already, keeping you from seeing what truly matters in your life. I don't like that feeling that I am being a slave to these things. I better exercise caution and self-control.

Not a new concept Television changed everything so did radio,Telegraphs Telephone just a few....No question permanent change "evolving" good or bad & un avoidable are occurring..the cool thing with the tech now they probably don't need to wait 50 years & accumulate research studied & put it together.. it happens realtime now.Social media & the internet are unbelievably amazing & incredible & at the same time empty & I'm completely tired of it but addicted/enslaved.Similar to some of the sensations of alcohol drug Nicotine addiction & the wonderful dark trappings

That first fact actually worried me a little. I spend a lot of time on Twitter and I get annoyed if it loads slowly, but I've also gone a week or two with little or no social media usage and found it refreshing. I definitely think it's harming our abilities to multitask too, the more devices we use. It seems productive but it's the opposite!

+Alejandro Cabrera Excuse me? What's wrong with selfies? God forbid someone takes a picture of themselves when they look good. God forbid someone actually *gasp* feels confident! And don't compare phones to children, we're not idiots. Obviously we know when to put a phone down. And you know what? Even though people are complaining about how phones make us less social, do you know what most people do on phones? They talk to other people! It allows us to talk to our friends even when we're not physically next to them, which is pretty damn great.

Great analysis and explanation of Internet addiction. I've never heard of phantom vibration syndrome before (and haven't experienced it either, luckily). I think the higher percentage of successful partnerships among those who met online is because the filtering process in online dating is much more detailed and intense, so it's unlikely for people to end up on a date with someone whose views/interests are severely incompatible.
@ericwitt4359
@ericwitt4359 2 жыл бұрын
What you are saying actually is problematic for dating. Because people have more of a tendency to be very picky and judgmental on different opinions, rather than trying to work out and/or through those differences. And indeed, if I am not mistaken, relationships are much shorter than 8 years ago.
@meronaberra

i'm my opinion, technology can definietly be productive or regressive depending on our ability to separate it from the reality we truly exist in and how we can move past vicariously living through our social media identities.

Our public school system needs to get it together. I seriously think that lecturing about ACTUALLY interesting stuff is very helpful, and encourages the kid to try his or her hardest in that class. I'm so sick of falling asleep in American Government, English 3, Pre-Calc and Earth Systems. Seriously, I don't know how they do it, but they seem to make me drowsy 10 minutes into their lecture. I'm just thinking of my kids and how I might put them through online schooling.
@borzavrl
@borzavrl 10 жыл бұрын
Just a bit of advice-be careful from who you get the online schooling and make sure that your kids have a chance to physically interact with other people around their age,or if they're mature for their age possibly older.

Fascinating video! One thing I would love to understand and see a video on is how ADHD works in the brain. I understand it has something to do with dopamine deficiency, but beyond that, I'm really unclear, and I'd love to get a better basic understanding of how it works. Thanks for the great videos!

I met my now husband on World of Warcraft 6 and a half years ago. We never sent a picture to one another and saw what the other looked like for the first time in real life when my husband traveled from Belgium to the UK to visit me for a week 2 months after knowing one another. We got engaged that week! And are happily married with two daughters! I think it was the things we said to one another online and our personalities that drew us in. Although I am very attracted to my husband. ;)

It is very crazy had social media has such a huge impact on peoples's lives. I will confess that I spend a large amount of time browsing through my social media accounts throughout the day. I experience phantom vibration syndrome quite often which is scary because it shows a sign of addiction. I use it to keep up with whats going on in the world because now its such a huge outlet for news that you can view at your fingertips in secs from anywhere.

I think it's amazing that social media can be addicting like drugs. It is also interesting that social media is more addicting when we talk about ourselves. It's sad that 80% of our online communication is all self involved.

The drawings in the background of the commentary helped to visualize the information being communicated. I definitely relate to the phone vibration syndrome. If I ever hear a noise similar to vibration I always check to see if I got a notification on my phone. I was surprised to hear that drug addiction and social media addiction can be seen in the same light. "Who doesn't like talking about themselves," is not always true and could have offended those who do not like talking about themselves. To become a more effective and engaging video it could have shown real life situations that related to the five topics given. For example, a successful partnership that happened over the internet and how it evolved over the internet to lead to in person. I think it could have added The video did a great job grabbing your interest and helped to understand how social media effects your brain.

Guys, I seriously need help. I can't live a day without my phone. When I wake up, I go straight on my phone. When I go to sleep, i'm on my phone. This is really a problem. And just to add on to what ASAPscience said about this video, technology can actually take a toll on your physical appearance. If you eat something & go straight on your phone (whether it's on a bed/couch) you are gaining more fat. If your always like this, it will be difficult to burn those pounds unless you go outside everyday for at least an hour and do an exercise of some sort. Social medias can also make a person insecure because of all the hate thats been spreading. Also, seeing other people's photos & looking at yourself makes you insecure. Technology has a lot of pros, & cons too it. But seriously. I need help. Is there any advice & anything useful that will help me stop being so obsessed with technology. I really need help, this is becoming a problem.

Try just staying away from it, it's extremely easy. Turn the ringer off/to vibration mode, or just turn it off. After a while, you'll forget about it. After a few days, you'll start to grow off your phone and only check it once you get bored. That's what I do sometimes to stuff, good luck though!

How about this. Get rid of your phone and buy a simple one with limited specs? I used to rarely sit on my phone, but once I got a smartphone last summer I realized how often I'm online these days. As for your computer, you have two options: 1) cancel your internet subscription or 2) set up a timer where you only go online for an hour or three hours but once a week. Once time's up, turn off your WiFi, put your laptop in the closet, and do something else. In the first few weeks you'll experience withdrawal symptoms, but the more you adapt to your new life, the less you care about going online.

Mackenzie Hollow I'm a little late, but I hope I can still help at least a little. Once, I was grounded from my phone for a long time, a few months, actually, and it wasn't till then that I realized how much I was involved in media. When I was able to use it again, I did so, and ever so slowly, the quality of life deteriorated... I had yet another realization as to how rich my life was, how many things I was doing, how intimate my relationships were to those around me, how much more open, happy, and productive I was... Media just sucks you into a little hole that's hard to get out of. Make sure you want this-- a better life-- badly enough, and then just stop. Stop altogether. It doesn't have to be forever, just until you're ready and can control yourself again. It's hard, yes, but the outcome is so much grander and more extravagant than what could've come of settling back into bad habits. And the satisfaction, it lasts-- and it's genuine.

I am going to x-post this Quote from my own recent English Essay about the Internet, both on pessimistic and optimistic videos about social media. "The Internet and social media amplify all qualities, negative or positive. The Internet is widely an example of how “good becomes great, bad becomes worse.”" "All social media platforms are double-edged swords. All double-edged swords have a dark side, but they also have a bright side."

Yes, social media is bad when it comes to some things, like the lack of face-to-face interaction there is now, or the amount of time we are spending on it, but it can also be beneficial nowadays to create networks, find out about important topics, etc. We can't discredit social media's many beneficial attributes.

I think a lot of what we associate as “internet addiction” is when people use the internet to escape their reality. The “instant gratification” is, I think, the biggest part. It reminds me of that scene in Inception when the Indian people go into the dream world to escape their reality; they live there. That’s similar to our internet lives, where we are immersed and find ourselves spending hours on them. Great and Informational video, as always.
