Lucie Fink goes on a 5-day juice cleanse hoping for more natural energy, and (spoiler alert) she cannot finish it! For the first time ever in 'Try Living with Lucie' history, Lucie doesn't complete the 5 day challenge she's taken on. After speaking to a nutritionist and learning just how bad a juice cleanse is for your body, Lucie sets off on a new course.

Awesome video! I did a 20day juice cleanse a few years ago and lost 20lbs... And almost lost my job. I had such low energy. I was so irritable! After the cleanse was over I gained 30lbs. I learned nothing and wasted so much money. Juicing is NOT cheap! I thought that drinking just fruit and veggies would save me money. I was SO wrong. Now I know it's all about balance. Keep up the amazing videos! I love watching them! I would love to see you try 5 days of fast food to see how that affects your mood, skin, etc.

I've done lots of juice cleanses, the longest was 4 days. Yes, you feel like crap the first day, but it gets better. A LOT better. By the second day, I had so much energy I didn't know what to do with myself. You have to get over that horrible "hump" of feeling like you're going to die, then you feel fantastic. By the fourth day I wasn't even hungry at all. When I broke my fast with an orange, it was the most delicious orange I had ever eaten and the gratitude for having it was immense. There are a lot of medical reasons to fast. It's not just a fad. You have to do your research and know what you're doing. It's also not for everyone, especially if you have certain medical conditions. She didn't give it a chance, she quit the first day.

FYI-When you go on a juice cleanse you are supposed to eat clean at least a few days and ideally a week before. Ie mostly raw fruits and veggies. When you go on a juice cleanse straight from eating meat and dairy it is so hard on your body. But when you go from eating clean, it makes you actually have energy and feel better. That is what they forget to tell you.

She went into the juice cleanse with a preconceived notion that they don't work. Then she quite after one day, blaming her headache and fatigue from not eating food. Perhaps going cold turkey on the coffee (she drinks two cups a day) and not the food was the cause of headache and fatigue.

+Mallory McFall I think there a lot of things Lucie could speak to other people about instead of doing them. To me that's not what this series is about though. It's about learning about different issues and opening a conversation about them. One thing I love about these videos is most of the time she does speak to someone else, whether it be an expert or someone who lives a certain way. Obviously you can't sleep outside for five days and walk out saying "that's it, I know everything about being homeless" because it's not that simple.

If someone is a hunter they won't see the logic behind it because they don't have the empathy for living things like a vegan would. ""Experience is a better guide to this than deductive logic". Not saying anyone is wrong here, but it really depends on who you're talking to and what their experiences are.

Juice are full of vitamins and minerals, as well as antioxidants. They are amazing for your health. That being said juice clenases are not good because they lack fiber, are usually low in calories and really low in protein. Those fruits and vegetables in their whole state would have been great. Now, they do help to detox the body when you have a very unhealthy lifestyle with lots of processed foods and animal products, because of their rich nutrient density and lack of toxins. They let the body cleanse itself (which is what always happens) instead of making the body be so full of toxins that it cannot cleanse properly.

typically cleanses are for people who need to get rid of excess body fat. For example the Master cleanse. It forces your body to consume the white fat cells as energy. Therefor you lose body fat, but doesn't help with people who are already thin.

The only reason you probably had a headache the first day is probably because you have an addiction to caffeine as most do. Juice cleanses aren't for the weak and you should definitely build your way up. This video is the equivalent of someone who doesn't workout going to the gym for the first time for 2 hours and then crying that exercise is bad because they can't move the next day.

Before doing a juice cleanse, about a week before you should get into the habit of drinking a lot of liquids. You can still eat solid food , but try to have more liquids than solid , like soup or have multiply drinks for one meal.
@beverlyjonas4724

Honey, the crash is a normal response to a cleanse, but if you had kept going you would've gotten a huge boost of energy. Our bodies are made to do this as a means of survival. When we were living in the wilderness, we would go long periods of time without eating as meals were often scarce. It starts with a huge drop in energy. This is your body telling you that you need to eat. After a few days your body will realize that this method is not working and instead you will get a huge rush of energy. This energy reserve is there to ensure that you are able to hunt for food. The energy boost feels so good, and once you reach that point in the cleanse, it's really not necessary to keep going, what it means is your body has detoxed, and ready to receive plenty of nutrients. Once the energy boost feeling comes just start eating very healthy foods to continue on the healthy path and your body will thank you by maintaining this new energy level.

Lucie aside from consulting with that one nutritionist, I'm curious to know if you've done any other research on detox symptoms and scientifically what happens in your body when you cleanse? So everybody's body reacts differently to a cleanse (obviously). When someone eats unhealthily (processed foods, meat, ext.ext.) then they could undergo major detox symptoms that typically last less than a week or so depending on how quickly your and effectively your body rids itself of the damage done. Think of it as "poison in, poison out." That shit ain't gonna feel so hot being excreted from your body. Some people feel absolutely, downright terrible at first. Those who eat clean, maybe have done many cleanses, may experience little to none of those symptoms at all. A lot of people would like to hear that juicing or cleansing is bad for you because they find comfort and pleasure in junkie foods but honestly it is not. I've done sooo much research on both sides of the topic and I'm still trying to wrap my head around why they would even try to convince people that nourishing your body with the vitamins and nutrients it needs to function at it's optimal best would be unhealthy? Sounds backwards and twisted. It actually makes me kind of sad to see that stuff when juicing is a huge factor in disease prevention and has cured people of diseases. Sometimes I'm thinking like "Is this some sort of propaganda from the junk food industries trying to people addicted to disease causing processed foods." I did the research on juicing and cleansing to just gain more insight, but beforehand it was still commons sense to me what is healthy for the body and what is not and I'm pretty sure fruits and veggies are not so bad for ya lol. It's not for everybody, but it is for the people who want to get through the detox symptoms and fuel up on what the cells of your body desire most. It's not bad to not want to juice and it doesn't some one bad for eating unhealthy. It's just a personal call on what you want for yourself.

Hi Lucy, I really love all your videos, but I was very surprised of how little research (as you asked everyone to do!) you did for this video. I'm not sure what is happening in the United States with companies offering this "service", but to me a "juice cleanse" looks nothing like what you did there! I've been doing them once a year for several years now and it takes a lot of studying, physical and mental preparation to go into one and come off one, and it's definitely a very intense process that you should probably not be done while working. That said, I do understand that misinformation in the "health" industry is a huge problem, since fast diets and patch solutions are much more profitable than properly educating people on what they are consuming.

yeah fad diets are way too common here, people are more likely to listen to biased doctors and companies trying to sell stuff, rather than doing their own extensive research. I went on a 60 day juice cleanse and it was hard. The hardest thing ever. But I did it and I juiced them all MYSELF. That is one of the many things you did wrong. You didn’t Juice them yourself. By doing my juice cleanse, I didn’t have to take my anti depressants and migrante medication and I never felt better. I do a 5 day juice cleanse every 3 months to ‘restart’ my body. You have to understand that you have to do things while you’re on your juice cleanse so you don’t think about food. Like exercising, going shopping, hanging with friends, etc. It’s all about will power and determination. I can’t believe you couldn’t even finish a 5 day. But it’s alright. Also btw, it takes around a week for your body to get out of the shock it went through by switching your diet, so 5 days was just the body cleaning itself.

When you are used to eating 3 meals a day, along with snacks, of course going a few days without food will be hard. She gave up and her doctor made her feel better about it, is what just happened. Also, those juices had little to no nutrients after about 30 minutes of being juiced, a lot of people don't know that. When the body isn't processing food, it does other stuff like heal and get rid of toxins. Give your system a rest for a few days at least once a month and it will thank you dearly. You may not succeed on the first try, but dont make excuses. Just try again. You could start with one day, or even eating one meal a day, and work your way up. The more you do it the easier it gets. After a while it becomes second nature. To be honest, even eating nothing but raw fruits and veggies for a few days would yield the same basic results.

Girl you didn't even manage one day of juicing. A juice fast is about preparation, its also about making the juices yourself and knowing exactly what to put in them. I did a 28 day juice fast lost 35lbs got rid of my eczema and didn't have one migraine that I usually suffered from daily. I also slept a lot better. I really hope this doesn't put anyone off juice fasts. Watch fat sick and nearly dead if you're interested in how to do it correctly :)

I think this video is giving the wrong message. since when is drinking raw fresh pressed juices bad for you? its super important to fast and cleanse. there is so much toxic food out there, it gives your system a break and a chance to recover. i disagree with your health professional about the kidneys and liver being magical and never needing help cleaning toxins out. it's called a metabolic load. you were experiencing a hyxheimer reaction or in other words, detoxing. probably caffiene withdrawal as well. hence the headache and fatigue. when you cleanse you want to be able to sleep a lot and really relax and repair. it's important to have a good support system when taking on a cleanse/fast. it's not for everyone but it's definitely for the hard core that want to achieve optimal health.

I ran a juice service for two years. My company had limited success, it was beloved by all, but costs crippled me (in a nutshell). But coming from a big fitness background- I never recommended they ONLY drink the juice! I was the first one to tell them not to do that :) :P because it's not sustainable, and most people have work and activity to do - they're not able to just conserve energy and meditate all day unless maybe you're on retreat. So I recommended to all of my customers- to try going gluten-free, and to cut out as much sugar, caffeine and alcohol as possible. I recommended your basic healthy balanced eating and portions and proportions...Quinoa or rice & beans was a top recommendation ;) I had one guy do my cleanse, and then go on to slowly lose and keep 10lbs off, BC e realized gluten didn't agree with him so he didn't care to re-introduce it and that one dietary shift moving away from processed refined flour and carbs, bread etc. helped him get off some excess fat. I was really happy for him and proud of being able to help someone make a healthy lifestyle shift. Another woman I was honored to get to be part of her team, definitely can't take credit! But I got to help - she did a bikini fitness competition and WON! It was amazing. She shredded down towards the end using juicing to help her- and we custom made her juices to be ultra low sugar/ almost no fruit and all veggies. Lots of cucumber and celery! I also warned people how WITHOUT the fiber of some solid food the sugar can be less healthy BC it rushes, and how some juices are just TOO full of the higher GI, sweet, juicy fruits. Too much sugar is too much sugar! Even from "healthy" sources like fruit. So, this was a cool take! I have pretty much always agreed with this even when I got into the biz. My favorite way to get my orange juice for example, is, ready?? To EAT AN ORANGE. 😝👍✨ it's not too much, and bound with the fiber to slow absorption. Sections let you have smaller portions...one good orange can be your pick me up throughout the day if you eat it slice by slice 😛 or a few at a time. It helps me keep my blood sugar STABLE throughout the day when I do that- especially starting mid-morning-afternoon, when I tend to get that mid-day slump.

I think you should only do a juice cleanse if you have to and only do it for 2-3 days. My teacher did a 3 day juice cleanse and that was the best she ever felt. She had been really sick and she didn't know why so she wanted to flush everything out over the weekend. On Monday she ate regular again and she got sick. Then she went to her doctor and found out she was allergic to gluten.

Educate yourself on things like the Gerson therapy to learn that juice detoxes, when done correctly, actually have more health and healing benefits than you could possibly imagine, such as curing stage 4 cancer. I know you're doing this for entertainment purposes only but don't shoot down what you don't know. Of course your doctor is going to refute it, he's trained in drug dealing, not nutrition.

Think people get confused with juicing and cleanse. I see what your nutritionist is talking about but also don't agree with her on juicing. Last year I got pretty serious about the whole subject. If you try juicing it will make you tired and go to the bathroom a lot the first 2-3 days but after that it will boost your energy a ton. A lot of people are too lazy or get scared when they start. A lot also go with store bought or fake juices. Do some research and make a solid plan.Everyone is different as well but juicing helped me a ton! Extremely happy I started it last year I lost 60lbs and with a low thyroid issue I needed some help. Thankfully I found it and never looked back.Juicingftw

Dear Lucy, I like your videos, but I think you didn't even try this time. It is important that before juice cleanse you need 2-3 days to prepare, not to eat animal products, and eat less every day. Yes you can have symptoms like headake or weakness for 1-2 days, that is why juice cleanse is recommended to start on weekend, not on your office day. On the third day you will feel the difference. When I made 3 weeks cleanse I even went 2 times a week to kick-box, 3 times zumba in a week, and had more energy than ever before. I helps to give your body a lot of minerals and vitamins, juice containes more because you would never eat normally that much veggies in a day. If you don't feel full, than try drinking them as a smoothie, so you don't waste the fiber. and won't get hungry. Of course juice cleanse won't eliminate all the bad food people are eating during the year, but helps your body and digestive system to relax a bit. It can also be a good start for a lifestyle change.

I did a 30 day juice only cleanse and I don’t think you gave the cleanse the chance to work properly. The nutritionist who said you don’t get enough nutrients is not correct because if you juice properly (that is, juicing lots of fresh vegetables, minimal fruit, drunk immediately after juicing or at least within 2 days) then you get loads of nutrients because you’re essentially consuming way more produce than you would normally be able to eat. The point of the juicing is not to ‘flush’ your system, it’s to provide a ton of nutrients without the fibre so that your digestive system can easily process the juice and the nutrients are more easily absorbed. It’s superloading nutrients without stuffing yourself full of food and the fibre that usually takes a lot of energy to digest. It’s giving your digestion a break. You should also drink water to support this process. What I found was that the first few days are rough, your body wants all the coffee, carbs, sugar it’s used to getting and it took a good 4 or 5 days to get out of that fog that you experienced and then I felt amazing - alert, clearer in my thinking, loads of energy, eyes got brighter, skin got heaps better. This is similar to what happens when you fast. As soon as you added in foods you effectively added back in the fibre making the rest of the ‘cleanse’ pointless. You probably still ate well, but you were adding work for your digestion, so the good food in itself is good for you but it didn’t work the way juice cleansing can. Now, everyone is different so if you weren’t feeling well, then fair enough, but that was only a day and a bit before you added food back in. You probably could have tried adding more juice, even juice with a slightly higher percentage of fruit in the morning and preferably not drinking the kind of juice you buy in those little bottles because the nutrients deplete quickly after they’re made and the commercial juices often have a too much fruit than you should really be going for. Your headache may well have had withdrawal symptoms from no coffee or carbs. I usually really enjoy your videos but I don’t think this one is a fair representation.

Juice cleanses are always hard at first because people aren't warned that you will go through detoxing and withdrawals. Both of these are painful. Both will make you feel ill. When your body is used to eating processed foods and meats and dairy and all sorts of things you will have withdrawals from not consuming them even within one day. Also beginning to detox is hard on your body. You feel worse before you start to see changes. It takes maybe a good three to five days before you start seeing changes. Also, it's possible those 8 juices a day were possibly not enough calories for your body. Some people need more calories than a pre-set juice diet might allow. :)

Ainsley Younger-Howard but you are wrong though.. if we needed milk and dairy we would still be drinking our mothers milks as adults but we don't, we are stealing milk from a cow which isn't natural at all haha so no dairy is not needed for our health at all. You can get calcium from loads and loads of other foods instead of from milk and there is actually no evidence at all that milk/dairy helps bones and teeth

I did a weeklong juice cleanse once, I actually felt very good and even lost some weight (prolly water weight, I'm sure).. But! I made all my own juices, and I drank TONS of water in between each one (not to mention I drank several servings of juice each meal, never limited myself to just one).. I think this can be done with lots of research, but yes, ultimately they're probably best off as supplements to meals in the long run, not just as the sole source of a meal

Maya Alicia Hi Maya! Hahah it's ok, not TMI at all :). And yes, I mean I got up to pee a lot but since I was working at a front desk just steps away from a bathroom, it was pretty manageable, haha.. During that week, I just did homemade juice, no solids (though trust me, the cravings for chips and snacks during the first couple of days were strong!).. When I began to eat solids again, I did it little by little and with lighter things, like maybe steamed veggies and potatoes/mash, and slowly went from there. Definitely wouldn't rush back into heavier solids like cheeses and fried things right away, otherwise your body will probably just reject them and you'll end up feeling sick (not to mention all the cleansing feeling undone!)

The detox is detoxing your lymph system and lymph nodes, and the healing is autophagy - which is your body turning to self healing when it's not busy digesting your food. The same as intermittent fasting. If you're eating with the juices, it's just vitamins and excess fructose without fibre to not spike blood sugars, at that point.

juice cleanses mess with my blood sugar. If I felt like I needed a break from food, I would just eat super light and chill. My digestion was not good a few months ago, and I found that the occasional half or full day without food helped. I couldn't imagine working while fasting I need lots of bedrest when I need a fast. You do get dizzy and spacey so it's safer to not do anything. I also think you need to be not well to notice a difference. And it's only temporary anyway, cleanses don't really resolve the root of the health issue.

While I agree that most people (at least in the Western world) eat too much, I don't see how eating only once a day or not eating at all throughout the day (while consuming liquids or not) can be recommended to the general population. And in terms of my health education, I hold an Honours Bachelor of Science in Human Biology, and I am currently pursuing a Master's degree in Public Health. So I think I'm doing okay on that front. Good video, though I think a weak point in the video is the use of a nutritionist. Nutritionists a non-accredited title that may apply to somebody who has done a short course in nutrition or who has given themselves this title. So basically, anyone can say they are a nutritionist and offer advice, which I think can be dangerous and misleading. I think it would have been better to have consulted a dietitian. A dietitian (qualified) have an university education and meet national/international standards.

I didn't do it for health reasons, it was a spiritual thing for me but I must say, the health benefits, by far, outweighed the spiritual benefits. I'm still undecided if I'll ever do it again. I've had no issues on a "smoothie cleanse". Then again I made them at home in my kitchen, consumed a much larger serving size, and technically I didn't "drink" them, they were smoothie bowls with "chunks" still in them and used a spoon. Many consisted of veggies so more good carbs and less sugars. It's better for your metabolism to feel the sensation of chewing to get your stomach juices flowing for digestion. Then again I suppose of you "read into something online" and think I can do this I my own, you're bound to fail. Instead of catering searches around what you want to hear/read, go to a library and find varying sources to make a more sound decision.

When it comes to these cleanses (and with trying anything that's new), it boils down to being educated on all fronts: veggie to fruit ratio, how much juice to drink, how much water to drink, how to EASE into the cleanse and how to ease out of it, and the risks of juice cleanses. I've never done more than a juice-only 3 day cleanse and I can tell you it's been a good experience every time.
