Once in a while I'll take a 2 to 3 hour nap during my driving shift. We get 14 hours to complete 11 hours of driving. My team mate calls it a "union nap". 😅😂😊

That sounds great. I always try and get a nap in when I'm being loaded/unloaded. Usually an hour each way.

I do that myself. I try to get started early enough in the morning that I can easily take an hour or 2 for a "safety break" as I like to call it. . Because the minute I catch myself zoning out, I'm looking for a place to sneak a nap.

You can go down the mountain slow as many times as you want, but you may go down only once too fast.

Amen. NEVER go down the mountain too fast. I always see drivers passing me going down, and those guys either have 100% confidence in their equipment, or they're just too dumb to know any better. Most of them don't even speak English. I'd add, changing lanes in winter; drivers need to power down just a bit while you change lanes. You're changing from slush and ruts to ice, and your drives are going to slip out from under you, and you're going to lose control if you try to pass someone too hard on an icy highway.

The non English speaking ones are the most prevalent these days. They're the ones that ride their brakes the entire way down. They're also the ones who's trucks were among the record numbers that were spun out and Jackknifed in the winter storm between Iowa and Indiana this past winter. I've never seen so many in my 26 years driving a truck as I saw this past winter. Many of them are from countries that has never seen snow in their lives.

In about 1981, one of my early jobs was in a freightliner cab over with a very oil leaking Cat with no jakes, I headed down 5 mile into Bakersfield, couldn’t hold her back even in 4th gear, brake’s glowing red, decided to ride it out in top gear out in the hammer lane! Brakes didn’t stop smoking until I got to Stockton 😂and yes, it fried all the wheel seals and warped the drums!

Every winter or the moment you Start to see snow build up there will be 2 or 4 trucks flipped on their side on the side of the road.

You are spot-on with every single one of these topics. Attention to each one will keep drivers (and fellow travelers) alive. One thing I learn quickly when I started driving: you have to be constantly checking everything around the truck (other vehicles, lane positioning, trailer/load/tires/tarp). Being aware of everything around you ALL THE TIME is essential. In other words, professional driving takes 100% of your attention, most of the time. Cell phone should be used only when absolutely needed. Your attention NEEDS to be on the road ahead.

Going to add to the no texting... had a truck ahead of me swerving decided to pass him and get him behind me. I looked over and he was doing paperwork needless to say I gave him much flak about it on the cb and he came back with walk in my shoes 👞. He didn't like my come back to that!😂

#6; Don't smoke. Smoking probably kills and disables more truck drivers than any other cause

Another great video, Dave!! I love when the lessons come with anecdotes. I just started hauling fuel and when you casually said, "...and I was hauling gasoline" I yelled OH GOD at my laptop🤣🤣 On the driving tired thing, I've been amazed at how much a power nap at a rest area helps me. I usually will pull off, take a lap (walking around is a huge help, of course) and then take 15-20 minutes in the bunk with my eyes covered. Even if I don't really sleep, I feel so much more focused when I get back behind the wheel. I have never been one to nap but it's been a necessity with trucking schedules and this really works for me.

All good points, I got so tired one time I thought the gator recaps that come off tires were moving like a snakes out on the highway time to shut her down.

I'm glad you made it down the mountain ok. My dad hated Mount Eagle going to and back from Florida. Just a big fifth wheel camper, but he still didn't like it. I came down it at night one time (just in a pick-up) with fog so bad that I had to hang my head out the window to see the lines on the road. Didn't know it was going to be that bad when I started down.

Way back when we ran paper logs. I know I was tired. I must have zoned out but still functioning. When I came to my senses I had realized that I drove past the exit 30 miles back and had to turn around. Last time I drove tired. A twenty minute cat nap could do wonders but you still need a good long sleep to rejuvenate.

I did that once on mt. ASHLAND in Oregon Going into California, 6 rolls of paper, almost took out the bug station at the bottom of the hill... it's been 40 plus years I still have the occasional nightmare about it.

You can always take a hill or a curve too slowly. You can only do it too fast once.

I retired from trucking 20 years ago, but last company I drove for used reefers. One of our drivers picked up a load of bananas near Philadelphia, drove to our yard near Detroit, parked the truck in the yard for the weekend, did not have to deliver until Monday. Meanwhile the reefer ran out of fuel, and all the bananas turned brown by Monday morning!

That's a scary feelin if u let the truck get away from you. Sometimes If it's rain especially in cold weather driving empty could be dangerous.

I just love the drivers who come down cabbage too fast, get those brakes smoking and stinking, then pull into arrowhead and park at the pumps to let them cool down while they go inside to change their panties.

Add a #6, don't drive the Grey lines down a mountain pass into California. Some the rock outcroppings will tear a hole in your trailer.

Driving down the hill too fast is easy to do with an automatic transmission truck. The driver has no control even if it’s switched to manual. The unit is designed that if it is speeding too fast, it will upshift rather than maintaining the gear. This is why you see a big increase in smoking brakes because, the trucks of today will not hold hills like they did when they had real jake brakes and manual transmissions.
