This really helped me to understand a lot!

I've found counting using Indian tabla syllables (modified Konnakol) more useful than the 1-e-&-a 2-e-&-a... Instead using: Ti-ka-di-mi-Ta-ka-di-mi (modified spelling) This is not only more musical (to me), but helps accent the 'e' and 'a' that are soft vowels. It's also easier to move the accents around the beat, verbally. I think of it as a rhythmic version of pitch solfège. It takes a little getting used to, and it's a good idea to integrate this into reading exercises, too, lest one does a reading gig and has to revert back to "standard" counting during odd times, and like, due to comfort. Just my $0.02.
