My dad was a self-taught drummer. I used to watch him and go to gigs with him. I would mess with his kit a bit as a kid. Sadly, he passed away 18yrs ago. I stayed away from drums. Now, I'm wanting to pick them up. I keep playing things over and over in my head. As soon as I can, I'm gonna get a kit. I'm starting from scratch, but I'm excited. Your videos give me great ideas. Thank you for the time and effort you put into your videos. It is very appreciated.

@@StephenTaylorDrums I appreciate it. I am quite sure they will look at your passion for drumming with fondness. Anything that brings a person positive vibes and allows them to give something back to humanity, I find that their loved ones are generally very fond to be a part of that experience. Sometimes, just being a spectator is all it takes.

Hey Stephen. I am a relatively new drummer. I have played various instruments through my life but have fallen towards the more aggressive rock style of drumming. I do desire to learn it all though. I had to cancel my in person lessons due to work demands. I want to continue being fed drumming knowledge. Although there are many great options for online lessons I think you are in my top 3. I don’t have much free time. My question is: does your online school have any time sensitive constraints? Might be a dumb question but I can’t really commit to a schedule with this route. Thanks for the great videos of knowledge you provide for free.

It's interesting...the first fill was labelled as "jazz," but you played the intro to the fill as "funk"..correct me if I'm wrong..i like the feel you gave it a lot!

Joseph Greenfield Sorry for the confusion...the fill COMES from a classic jazz tune. The lick itself. But it can be used in any context.

Stephen Taylor u weren’t confusing I was just commenting that the beginning of the groove was really funky..I really appreciate how u slow it down so I can follow..these are licks that I would never have come up eith and I appreciate what u do! Coming back to the drums after 30 years..so this is really helpful beyond words

I use cardboard on a folding chair and plastic storage tubes as well as a practice pad. My neighbors don t know it , but they appreciate it. You have to practice so use your imagination. Good luck to you.

Thinking about getting the pack 14 hats, 16 and 18 crashes, 21 ride. Already have k hybrid pack same sizes as above and 20 k dry ride as well as A custom splashes. What I am worried about is will they be loud enough and will they complement my other cymbals ie will they be able to be mixed together.

Great lesson. At the 10:00 mark in the lesson you mention a dotted rhythm related to the bucket of fish fill. Well, i've got the bucket o' fish thang down, but when i play it i pause and can't play "in a dotted rhythm" as you do. Any thoughts?

It will take some practice. You essentially are playing the pattern starting every third 16th note.

Thanks for your quick reply, Stephen. I know you are busy and I'm being a pain in the neck, but could you please send me a message with the sticking pattern? From my understanding, "Bucket of fish' is snare-hi-tom-floor-tom kick with a triplet feel on the first three? But i video at the 10"00 mark i'm hearing more than one hit on the snare. I can play the bucket of fish very fast, but it isn't sounding like a dotted rhythm you play at the 10:00. Sorry to be pain in the neck. I have REALLY enjoyed and learned a lot from your videos. Peace.

@@StephenTaylorDrums thanks for your quick reply regarding the fill I asked you about. I know you are busy and i'm being a pain in the neck, but could you please send me a message with the sticking pattern? I'm still a bit confused. My understanding of the 'bucket of fish' fill is snare-hi-tom-low tom kick, with the first three played with a triplet feel. I have that down. I can play it smooth and fast, but I dont understand the dotted rhythm you play at the 10:00 mark in the video. I have really learned a lot from your videos and always go to your channel to get tips. You rock. Peace.

I love to use the stutter step with a 16th double kick between. So spicy! Everyone has a “natural sticking” that they are super comfortable with and the stutter step is mine.
