Making professional stream layouts and effects in OBS Studio can get pretty confusing. That’s why you need to organize your scenes and sources to keep them neat and tidy.
The tips in this video are very simple, but they are the basic skills that are used by anyone that makes professional looking stream layouts.
Nobody is reading this right now, but I’m filling this out with text so it looks like I’m putting in effort.

I've been using photoshop for like 2 decades now, whenever something doesn't have layers I'm at a loss for what to do. Not having nested groups in OBS hurt me deeply, took a while to figure out you can achieve the same with nested scenes. It's _really_ not the most intuitive way to deal with layering, but jank like this is just a good reminder that OBS is a open source hobby project rather than a professional production tool.

Hey! Got a long-ish one here, but I gotta tell ya, your tips here do help make a streamer's life so much easier. Two techniques you covered here I make extensive use of in my OBS Studio setup: 1. Nested scenes! This one, I learned from another person's stream. This helps me ENORMOUSLY. I use it for abstraction, mainly. Example: For a visual source, I add a game, then make sure it fills the canvas. No, it's not gonna fill the screen, but instead, it's going to be included in another scene which is sized to fit in a PNG frame., and THAT scene is included in the final scene. I also use it to build up overlay abstraction scenes so I can flip between KZfaq and Twitch streams. Selecting that and other scenes which allow me to select which music I open and close my streams with are also in scenes. Again, I flip visibility depending on whether it's a Twitch or KZfaq stream. And if an abstraction scene is set up so that only one layer is visible, I use Exeldro's Source Toggler Lua script to help out. ENORMOUSLY useful! For programming sources, I will have several scenes, like: - Game scene -- Game capture - Game scene -- Window capture (some tougher games, like Nation Red, require this). - KZfaq source -- I use YTCP to show some livestreams in my streams, where I have a control panel in a web panel and the program panel as a browser source. - Browser source -- In case I want to browse the web but not with a web browser, I'll set up a browser source, then set the source to "interact" with it. Should work for web games as well, e.g. Mahjong Soul. - Browser capture -- Just a window or display capture of a web browser. Duh. - Anything else I then full-size the source while a conduit scene has all the source classes bundled together, and then I just alter the visibility of the source I want people to see, again, it's full-sized, but I don't have to mess with it whenever I use a new source. I also have a bottom graphic I try to never make invisible so that if I mess up, it'll tell me on-screen, "Hey, you dolt! You don't have source class (xyz). Check it!" That way the system will practically troubleshoot itself. Finally, I use a final source to include the above abstraction scene, acting as an "endpoint" for the source pipeline. It's permanently sized to fit the area where it will be shown on-screen. And with all that insane amount of abstraction I create with conduit and endpoint scenes, as well as the sources that go through those conduits and displayed by the endpoints, how do I tell what's what? That brings me to: 2. Separators! This one, I figured out on my own. My biggest gripe is I wish I could reuse separators. You CAN with Streamlabs, but you can't with OBS Studio. However, I'm digressing a little, so allow me to get back on track. I use a couple levels' worth of labeling. I create wide-spaced, right-justified labels for classes of item blocks in the scenes, e.g. scenes that face the viewer, scenes that are conduits for abstraction, endpoints that end up on my layout that goes out on stream, and, of course, the all-important sourcing scenes. They're big and right-justified so I can find them as I twirl my mouse wheel. Then I use smaller-spaced text with "borders" so I can sub-classify scenes therein. My biggest gripe about doing it this way without a dedicated "marker/remark" scene is that a lot of programs that grab a list of the scenes via Websockets, e.g. LioranBoard's receiver and other programs that allow me to pull down a list of scenes, that's a bigger payload of stuff for these programs to pull down. Worse, it may not be in the same order as they are in OBS itself. So you may have all your labels at the very top, then all your scenes below. That's where it may pay to tag those scenes the same way you suggested tagging sources. Also, just like how you can't use HTML tagging on scene names, likewise you can't assign colors to them. Oh well. Anyway, lots of good stuff! I may do something like you may do and that's give a tour of my own setup. I'm already setting up a tutorial for migrating from SLOBS to OBS Studio (yes, I know, there are already plenty of those out there, but I'm in the VTuber community, so this may resonate with VTubers more, plus there are VTubing-related things to account for, too). Thanks for putting this up! While I already used those two techniques I mentioned above, you gave me more ideas of what I can use!

One of the most powerful things I found with nested scenes that wasn't really touched upon was the ability to turn off a certain source in all scenes it appears in. Do you switch between game streams and watching videos on youtube streams and you have several different sized scenes? Just put the browser that in its own scene and only use this scene nested in other scenes where you want the browser visible. One click and the browser is gone everywhere and you won't have an incident where your twitch dashboard lays on top of a scene where you forgot to remove it, or in a new scene you forgot to add to individually toggle in the macro

Nested scenes are really a game changer ... i just lazy onm the naming and put a _ before the sub-scene names ;) but the idea is pretty much the same .. also controlling them via streamdeck is then possible too, like turning off the camera you just add the command to the subscene and you go dark regardless what scene is active, that's impossible to do without nested scenes)

I like the idea of making templates, and I can kind of see the use of nested scenes, but your setup is MAD complicated, and I found myself thinking "is it really ever necessary to go 10 layers deep like that?" Especially cause you have a nested scene that's literally just one scene. It seems like that should be pointless but clearly it's not otherwise you wouldn't have done it lol. Point is I think that a more detailed walkthrough of your layout and why it being so complicated is beneficial in comparison so separating out some of those nests would be good
