The Pedal Kick is the ultimate trick to unlock every major move when it comes to trials riding. Pedal kick technique can be a little tricky to learn, so I've broken down five ways to practice and improve your pedal kicks. The real trick is dialing in your pedal and brake timing, and each one of these drills will help strengthen that connection and get you to perfect pedal kicks!
I'm doing pedal kicks on the Inspired Hex Team (26") but you can apply this skill to any bike (trials or mtb) to get the same results!

I watch your videos daily over and over again then trying to put it into practice I’m struggling with side balance once in the back wheel I can do some small pedal hops now and again your tutorials are helping a lot though

So awesome! Try to spread your knees a bit wider and sink down on the back wheel. That wider stance combined with a slightly lower center of gravity should help!

Would be nice to see a more (or about the same) basic - how to pedal up. I mean the movement bringing you to the back wheel stand position by pushing the front pedal while standing still.

Its a power assisted bunny hop :D The peddle kick helps to pull the front up (into a standing upright stright posistion) then the momentum of this gives you the hight then lift your feet up while pushing the bars forward with this momentum, easy lol

Sure about any direction? Would be interesting to see pedal kicking backward. 🙂 I guess I got the idea of getting to back wheel via pedal up or whatever they call it. But pedal kick is hard because you need not only push the pedal but you you have to move your feet a bit beforehand. That's complicated.

Just got an inspired flow 2021, 51 years old, fat with one arm slightly shorter than the other ( accident) What could possibly go wrong..

Timely video for what I'm working on. One issue I seem to have doing the side whip is that I end up counter-rotating. What I mean by that is that I end up kicking my rear wheel in the desired direction, but instead of my front going in that direction, I have just rotated it the opposite way. So for example if I'm trying to side whip to the right, my rear wheel will land on the obstacle, but my front will be off to the left. Any suggestions how to correct that tendency?

If you’re under rotating the front wheel like that, you might consider pulling the bike slightly more vertical when you jump. That will make it easier to spin. However, I wouldn’t worry too much about the rotation at this point, you don’t need to make a full 90-degree pivot to be successful at this movement. Truthfully, just a slight twist should be all you need to get onto the obstacle. Also - are you hopping toward your back foot? That will make it easier, too. I know you’ve been working on that! 👊

Hey i tried it at the edge of the curb and i always slipping the back wheel when i precisely pull the brake at the edge of the curb, it's like my nack wheel couldn't grip at the edge of the curb could you tell me what do i do wrong?

Practice makes progress. Start on two wheels with those first few drills, it will help you build confidence! You got this!

Alright. This will be my next focus for progression. Aaron, and others, if I have a little fear from a couple loop outs to my back from my mod, will trying to learn on my 29er first be beneficial? Still don’t wheelie we’ll- don’t have my balance point.

I'm not sure if the 29er will make much difference, to be honest. It's likely going to be more difficult with a bigger wheel like that. Not impossible, though. Also - there is a "newer" pedal kick tutorial video on this channel from a few months back - you may want to watch that one as well.

@@SuperRiderTV tonight’s homework then! Btw. I need to credit you, Mr Lutze, with my moderate success at the Baraboo Trials comp in Wisconsin last weekend 🙏. I rode beginner mtb and then sport on my 20”. The Super Challenging sport sections were set by our US elite national champ who can’t remember what is is to be an average beginner -if he ever knew.🤣🤣🤣. I learned that I and lot of us need to practice just navigating steep terrain on our trials bikes for next year’s Baraboo.

What is the recommended gear ratio with 25 front gears? now I use a ratio of 25x14. Thank You

I'm running a 22x18 on this bike, so you might try a slightly larger gear in the back if you have a 25t front cog.

@@deddyzhy9203 Use your knees, spread just a bit wider to give yourself a more stable platform. This also comes with more time, you'll be able to get them under control the more you practice the skill. I also try to sit my weight further back over the back wheel, which helps with my control as well. Have fun!

For steps 1 & 2, how much are you pulling up on your bars?

Not much, more guiding them back than anything. Your body weight on the back of the bike should help lever the front wheel up, so when you add the pedal kick motion, the job is done. If you’re pulling up too hard, there is a good chance that you’re leaning your body too far forward over the bottom bracket.

Is it possible on full suspension bike? I have tried with almost 0 result... :(

It's certainly a lot harder, especially if you don't have your rear suspension locked out...but it is possible. Try getting your weight even further back than you think you need to be (look down at your rear hub to make sure you're in the right spot).

I haven’t had any problems with it, thankfully. I’ll get sore if I do a lot of big repetitive motions (like the day I practiced bunnyhopping up the 3’ box for two hours), but otherwise no issues. 🤞

You forgot mention that in MTB the gear should be lower to get more power. In high gear the bike won't move.

That is true! The bike I'm riding in this video has a 22:18 gear ratio, super light by comparison (about third or fourth gear on a MTB)
