In this video leading proponents of 5 major educational philosophies -- essentialism, perennialism, progressivism, social reconstructivism, and existentialism -- describe their theories of education. This was a project of Dan Krutka's pre-service teachers in our Summer 2016 Schools & Society course at Texas Woman's University.

Fun video. Funny thing is Dewey was a stern lecturer at Columbia U, so while he theorized less hierarchical education and had educators implement progressive education in his lab schools, he was taught traditionally.

I agree that student input is valuable and helpful for engagement. Be it in the classroom and outside the classroom. The learning environment is a factor in growth.

All these philosophies are great resources for a real classroom today. Although all of them depends on the studetns' behavior.

thanks so much for doing this. just a note for suggestion (esp. because i love your concept and i do want to subscribe to your channel) i would help a lot when the speaker enunciates the words in the script clearly (not eating the words, that is) and is familiar with the lines (little or no hesitation).

I came to this video knowing that I hated Essentialism. Hearing Rickover's name mentioned in the same sentence with it helps me to understand why.

great video! it covers all of the pedagogical nonsense one learns in ed grad school. Dewey wanted democracy, adler wanted democracy, neill wanted democracy...... But privately they were all hegelians.

Hmmm, I'm just starting to look at educational philosophies, but it seems that Dewey is part of the pragmatic movement, not progressivism, right? I'm confused... Fun video, btw!
@DanKrutka
@DanKrutka 6 жыл бұрын
Krysalis Both terms are applicable. Dewey rejected all terms, including progressive, but it's still an acceptable way to characterize his work. No one really speaks of "pragmatic" education, which is why we stuck with "progressive..." the key is whether the description is accurate. :)

Traditional and progressive Traditional- the students mustlearn to function in society - the work of a teacher to deposit knowledge in to the head of students Progressive- student interest and voices should be includedor even guide the curriculum 9f study -Start with students question which can become the motivation for projects - students learn not only content through participatory experiences but also how to learn to problem solve and engage in democracy Progressive . Existentialism . Social Reconstructionism . Progressivism 5 philosophies *Essentialism( Arthur Bestor, william bagley, admiral Human G.) -academic historian Teacher centered- possess all the knowledge that the students needs to learn for the course -teacher is have the intellectual role model for the class - students just recieving instructions - have pre determine d curriculum( math, history, literature, natural science, foreign language) -Tested using standardize test(all learning same material) - expected to master your grade level In areas of information and skill before being allowed to progress to the next grade.
