In the US opinion polls only aggregate the popular vote. The election is based on electoral votes, so most analysts look at the state by state polls to determine the odds of who wins.

A note regarding the UK election: you say that the pendulum is swinging from one side of the political spectrum to the other, from a right wing party to a left wing party, inferring that they are complete opposites. It may be more accurate to say that the pendulum is swinging between the two most popular parties, Labour and Conservative. I would say it's dubious to claim that the Tories occupy a right of centre view with conservative policies. Labour and Tory right now just seem to be a slightly different shade of the murky brown abyss.

Gotta love the talk about my country Mexico and the editor just adding somewhat more info, in reality the biggest shock was not Claudia winning the presidency (which was heavily expectec), but rather the fact her coalition won an absolute majority in the Chamber of Deputies (2/3), and won 30 out of the 32 states in the Senate, although this time due to first minority and proportional representation they are expected to not reach the supermajority, although they can work with any party of the opposition. Aditionally on the governorships they retained all of their governors and aditionally flipped a state that was considered safe for the opposition. That was the real shock, that the governing coalition will pretty much have unlimited power and not a divided one like expected.

Why are the seats not proportional to the vote won in the UK? That seems unfair.
@richardlyon6692
@richardlyon6692 28 күн бұрын
To win a seat you have to get the largest majority of the votes in local constituencies (regions of a few small towns may be one, major cities usually have multiple ones within them etc). If for example the torys got 40% of the votes in every constituency and Labour got 50% in every constituency, then Labour would win every single seat, even though 40% of the country actually voted tory. It seems unfair because it is, it's a pretty bad way of representing the publics views, but it's the one we use.
@zak3744
@zak3744 27 күн бұрын
Proportional to what? You don't technically vote for a party, you vote for a person, the party label on the ballot paper is just that, a meaningless label that means nothing legally. You obviously couldn't ever stop MPs colloborating and forming teams who act together, and in reality many people do vote based on party affiliation of the candiates, but technically political parties are an informal part of the system. When you vote for "Fred Smith, Labour" you're really only voting for "Fred Smith", and the "Labour" bit is just an informal tag. So there is no total party vote across multiple constituencies, there's only votes for a bunch of individual people. The constituency is at the heart of the system basically. We talk about a "general election", but really it's 650 little elections that all happen on the same day. But they're all independent of each other, and that is kind of the point. An MP is linked to the consituency, not the whole country. So you could have a different system of voting (like STV) in a constituency that many people would argue would make things more fair and give more choice to voters, but doing so wouldn't change how MPs and Parliament work. But if you want _proportional_ voting (I assume here you mean proportional to the votes for a particular party across the country, that's what is normally meant), you have to first of all change to have people vote for parties, not people, giving parties a formal role and more power in the constitution, and secondly you'd have to get rid of the role of constituencies and that link with a particular MP who represents you as a citizen, both of which would be fundamental changes to the whole constitutional setup. (That's not to say whether it would be preferable or not of course, just that it'd be a really fundamental change and it's an entirely different way of thinking about how we represent people in Parliament, not just a minor tweak or a difference to "which team wins"!)
@kamikadzeto7

@@thanes1343 If Trump wins the USA presidential elections, which he likely will, then NATO will go into dormant slumber. Trump has already vowed to end US support for Ukraine AS WELL as called for raising tariffs on the EU. Trump could instead negotiate with Russia to end the war on a more favorable term for the Russians which will benefit Russia. Also if Trump wins the US presidency, I can potentially see France, with a more right wing government to become more emboldened to also end their support for Ukraine and possibly even become more emboldened to act against the EU in a Trump presidency. We've seen this with the UK, where Trump supported and backed the Brexit movement since it became a thing. Right now, more then 120 Republicans in the American house of representatives have voted to end support for Ukraine, if Trump takes the presidency, the US Republican party will be more emboldened to end their support for Ukraine.

Feel like its worth mentioning to an international audience. The labour party is supposed to be left-wing and the Conservative is right-wing. Although the UK is changing from majority conservative to a super-majority labour. The leader of the labour party had pulled the party over to right, abandoning any sense of left-wing policy. So in reality, the election will bring about very little change whatsoever

I woould like to add that for France, numerous french people are worried because the party inherits from former Waffen SS. Additionally, they want to put into question rights that have been established since 1789 (the birth right). Regarding Mayotte, this is because colonialists went on the island all the way back then, and now are on the island. It worries me immensely, as french politics are an immense mess.
@JOKERATM
@JOKERATM 29 күн бұрын
what are you on? it's because there's a massive inmigration from the neighbouring countries due to the infinitely higher standard of living, and the native people of the island have had enough, much like in metropolitan france where people are sick of mass inmigration. hope the french put an end to the madness on sunday
