Sadly, my private pilot's licence has expired as I had to devote my finances to my children's education. Gaining my licence was one of the greatest achievements of my life especially my first solo.If I may draw attention to another danger which has cost several lives in the area where I live. That is when on base leg and overshooting the point where you should turn onto finals. The temptation is to bank steeply to the left and then to the right in order to line up with the runway. I did this once when the controller asked me to expedite my landing as there was an airliner just behind me. I got away with it but several others haven't. The danger is in banking too steeply to the left at a fairly slow speed and the aircraft enters into a stall and spin at a height which is too low to recover. Result? A deadly crash.

@mrAZcardinal
@mrAZcardinal 5 жыл бұрын
Your Private's license doesn't expire but you do loose currency (must fly within a two year period or will need ground school) and your medical will also expire like Dean said. So, if you get a medical done and pass with at least a third class medical and take a ground course of at least one hour as well as a flight course of an hour, you can fly.

Good basic review. I've been a pilot with ratings for over 30 years with test experience in armature built and factory aircraft. That being said,, always room for review. I had an in cockpit electrical fire on take off. Electrical shut down right off. No auxiliary air so sniffing at the airvent helped. Immediately ran through several options and fortunately the best option was in the time frame. Flew an abbreviated pattern with a very short landing. Exited asap after landing. Several engine failures from partial to full in various flight regimes. VERY VERY important to stay calm and fly the airplane GENTLY.

Know and practice the turn back maneuver until you know precisely how much altitude you need for your aircraft and skill level. It is often well below 1000 feet agl. Glider pilots must demonstrate turn back at 200 feet agl. In my light sport, 400 feet agl is all I need. The maneuver is at a 45 deg bank at 1.3 times stall speed. Use best glide speed after returning wings to level. Practice, practice, practice.

Michael Rivera I was pondering that after replying above about exceptions to landing straight ahead, a glider or STOL microlight, might, depending on best glide speed and relative to sink rate, be able to turn back lower than 1000'. I guess its all about knowing the type and good decision making.

Lost an engine on a Piper Pawnee on take-off at 200ft. Managed to dive to the ground and do a wing over (balanced turn) and just got back on the runway. better then going into the river on the end of the runway. Wort while practicing, BUT you need spinning training to get it fully understood.

IMHO I would land at the nearest airport and troubleshoot an electrical problem on the ground, if at all possible. I've had 2 minor electrical problems so far. On my long student cross country flight, the fuse for the Hobbs meter blew. I called my instructor from the next airport and he said it was OK to complete the flight. I got charged tach time. The other was a panel light failure inbound on the ILS at Fort Wayne. I turned on the overhead light and was able to see the instruments OK, but the right seat passenger started fiddling with the breaker panel to isolate the problem. I felt this might cause another problem, so I told him it would be really helpful if he could watch for the runway and tell me the instant we broke out.

Maybe it's not important to other pilots but I'm really really curious about it. Hope someone answer my question. 😅 I thought the main difference of Cessna 152 and Cessna 172 is just the weight and baggage compartment of the aircraft. But, the emergency procedures of Cessna 152 and Cessna 172 is jumbled on the POH for "Engine Failure During Flight" (Restarting engine). - What's the main reason for difference on the procedures? - Why the "Primer- IN & LOCKED" is on the middle procedure on C152 and last for C172? C152 1. Airspeed - 60KIAS 2. Carburetor Heat - ON 3. Primer - IN & LOCKED 4. Fuel Shutoff Valve - ON 5. Mixture - RICH 6. Ignition Switch - BOTH (or START if propeller is stopped) C172 1. Airspeed - 65KIAS 2. Carburetor Heat - ON 3. Fuel Selector Valve - BOTH 4. Mixture - RICH 5. Ignition Switch - BOTH (or Start if propeller is stopped) 6. Primer - IN & LOCKED PS. I'm just a dumb student so apologies if it's a weird question for others. 😅

When flying know what in the sky and on the ground around you because if emergency hits you seconds count down fast in a engine out. You don’t need to land on a house when a corn field is over you right shoulder. Allow for away out of danger. And hydraulic landing pumps can cause a fire as well is the fire outside or inside shutting off fuel maybe a bad call.

In my opinion, the ballistic chute should be pulled whenever there's a significant doubt about the safety of the landing. This means possibly pulling in an engine failure situation. Cirrus' CAPS system, for example, has never failed to save lives when deployed within the safe speed and altitude envelope. Discouraging use of this system is bound to lead to fatalities in planes with perfectly good parachutes on top.

On electrical failure, a technical innovation would be to add a small pop-out turnable prop auxiliary power unit.This could be as feedback to the engine circuit just enough, if at a remote decision cruise or other altitude to get best emergency field or location landing.2.On fires, you can cut fuel and electrical, however if a fire become invested to the extent that an entire areas of the plane is involved, either a hand held extinguisher may be applicable, or a dedicated in engine compartment lined to spray emitter heads in engine fore extinguishers. 3.Not covered by commented on by another video here, is what to do if engine failure on takeoff and turning back to the runway is not optional? The question was asked if emergency field has big trees, heavy or light brush, or water, any quantity._On trees I answer if you know how to stall precisely, as in you flair for landing, put it on top of the tree.2 A. on brush heavy and light, your'e more than likely going to get banged up, but cut fuel and electrical, ELT should go off and if you are able, get away from the airplane 3. On water, same flair just before landing drop, but leave wheels up.Brace for impact, cushion over face and then take it in.Other notes, an emergency survival sack with a lanyard pull-out should be considered added to plane, even if it is a rental as per area described._Contents variable, food water,flair pistol, blanket or life raft, med.-kit._Make sure that any hand held radio is sealed and water proofed, for aircraft pass-over signal location._This video is older, but still very very valid. Your';e out in the middle of nowhere with no com. what and how do you survive this?Thanks *As old is this film is, why anyone even in a private aircraft should prepare for emergency crash and landing drills, is quite apparent. If you carry an emergency pack for any style of climate, if you can grab that satchel, it may spell the difference between life and death."If there is time to get to it and if your'e physically able to. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hJqoh82n2bmZh2Q.html

I have a few questions: Does the batery supply all eletrical system when there is an alternator failure? How can I extinguish engine fire during flight? How can the pilot control the aircraft after parachute deployment? Is it possible to have a normal flight in a 2 engine aircraft when one engine fails? What should all pilots do in case the engine fails above 1000 feet after takeoff? Thank you for your attention.
@prestonharrison339
@prestonharrison339 4 жыл бұрын
To Answer your Questions: 1.) Yes, the battery will supply all your electrical power once the alternator fails. Most aircraft have two 24V lead acid batteries, one primary and one emergency. Each will usually supply enough power for about 30 minutes depending on consumption and aircraft. Electrical power to the engine (for spark plugs) is provided by the magnetos, which is independent of the aircrafts electrical system. So if your batteries were completely dead, your engine would still run until you run out of fuel or turn the mags off. 2.) Depends on the type of fire. If it's electrical, shutting off the electrical system would most likely kill the fire, then you could turn components on one by one to find the source of the fire. If it's an engine fire, then stopping the fuel into the engine (i.e., tanks off, mixture cutoff, throttle off, fuel pump off, etc...) would most likely stop the fire. If someone just dropped a cigarette or your phone burned a hole into the seat next to you, there's usually a fire extinguisher that can be used, just remember to open the cabin windows to vent the fumes, just be aware that this may feed the fire though. Fire extinguishers could be used for all visible fires. 3. ) I've never flown an aircraft with a parachute system, so I'll leave this one up to someone else. From my understanding, you don't control it. You just fall very slowly to the ground. 4.) Yes, an aircraft with two can be flown almost normally with one engine fails, there's a lot more stick and rudder action, but it's 100% doable. In fact, a good chunk of the training that goes into the multi-engine stage is geared around learning what to do when that situation happens. 5.) Depending on aircraft and pilot experience, you can either opt for the straight ahead landing in a field or maybe a good road or highway or attempting a turn back to runway if altitude allows. This takes discretion and really knowing the capabilities of your aircraft though. I'm from the camp that believes no turn should be initiated under 1000' AGL, there's a lot who would argue this point tho. But, if I have nothing good out front and I know I have enough altitude and I can make the 180 degree turn back, I wouldn't hesitate to do that.

> Is it possible to have a normal flight in a 2 engine aircraft when one engine fails? Maybe some but not for most of them, you can fly it but should try to make a safe landing ASAP and never turn into the direction of the dead engine. You can find plenty of accident case studies where these types of planes have crashed. > How can the pilot control the aircraft after parachute deployment? They can't. You just sit back and wait until you're on the ground.

So what do you do when you got an airplane (piston engine with carb) that randomly dies like cars do sometimes? Check the fuel lines/pumps and ignition system and see if anything there went bad?
@captainshipman7377
@captainshipman7377 4 жыл бұрын
Fox McCloud 007 you still attempt a restart in a normal manner (if time permits) Mixture rich, carb heat on, fuel pump on, mags on both, primer in and locked, fuel selector on both. If the engine doesn’t start after all that then you need to prepare for a forced landing and secure/shut down the airplane

You can turn back a Cessna 172 at 400-500 feet... Basically you need to snap roll to about 100+ degrees of bank and pull as hard as possible, on the edge of a stall, ball centered. Spin and you die, obviously. You'll pull 3-4 G's and come out with plenty of airspeed headed right to the runway, with a loss of 100 feet or so ;) Try it at altitude, it works

It is something I would never do unless I had literally no other option. Without usable power in the emergency situation any small error would result in very nasty crash. The wind can be real issue too. Good to practice this so you know when and how to return to airfield but if there is any suitable field I can fly to without such extreme maneuver in emergency situation I take that.

Why can't I do a left turn if I see a field to land after a engine failure?
@ThrustFlight
@ThrustFlight 7 жыл бұрын
The reason you look 30 degrees in either the direction if you don't have the altitude to make it back to the runway is because you also need plenty of altitude to make a turn outside of that 30 degree window. When you turn after an engine failure, you lose altitude much more quickly and you're also using up a lot of your momentum to turn. You can easily find yourself in an unrecoverable spin if you try to turn too much in this situation. However, this is a general rule of thumb and not a hard and fast rule. If you find yourself in an engine failure situation immediately after takeoff, it is your responsibility to determine the safest emergency procedure. If you determine that the safest outcome involves you turning left, then that is what you should do. Your safety and the safety of others is paramount! Thanks for watching and fly safe!

Nothing new here. Only bad pilots respond in 7 seconds. I responded in less than 2 seconds to my 2 take off engine partial fails. landed them on runway from 300 feet turnback on Cherokee 180 and later on from agl 700 feet engine surges. From 700 feet I cut the power and Turnback to opposite. I taught that Turnback To Opposite Runway to many students in my CFI years of the 1990's. You react in 2-3 seconds in know the maneuver. 7 seconds if you dont know. But that is your fault for not knowing what you should know..
