Take as long as you like, mate. Your house, your rules! It's nice hearing about the engineering and mastering viewpoint that I never really consider nor hear about. Also enjoying hearing about albums and artists I've never thought of buying, albums I have thought of getting and even some I already own but never thought about in these terms. Enjoying your output so far.

When you really enjoy something you talk and talk about it and the people around you who also enjoy it can’t get enough. You do an amazing job with keeping the attention of your audience the video editing alone fantastic. I really like when you begin to discuss a record before showing it the anticipation! For whoever comments something negative rather then an assertive suggestion “if you don’t have something nice to say don’t say it at all” didn’t your parents teach you anything? Thank You!

Tuning from Paris. University of Vinyl rocks! I just finished watching the Allen Zentz episode. So much information and insights, awesome work. Eventhough it is beyond the topic of mastering, it is fair to remind that Allen Zentz had also been a great sound engineer (before launching AZR in 1974) with prestigious credits. As an example, the "Hot Tuna" Live at the New Orleans House in Berkeley (1969) produced by Al Schmitt with Allen Zentz manning the board remains one of my favourite records of those days, period.

Please don't let who ever is criticizing you to get in your head. I can assure you that I love your story telling, deep knowledge, what to look out for in the dead wax and wouldn't change a thing. I often go to old records that I haven't listened to in a while and listen with new ears after watching one of your episodes - keep doing what you are doing. I really appreciate all the work that you obviously put in to make these great videos.

I know of one photo of Allen Zentz on the back of the Nilsson Sings Newman album. He's crammed into the car with the three other 'technicians and engineers' that were responsible for the recording of the album.

Tim?, Discovered your channel today, Thoroughly enjoying your videos, watched your Bob Ludwig at Masterdisk earlier, then dug out The Nightfly and Goucho to listen again & confirm mine were marked Masterdisk RL😁 Back in the 80's my ears always knew everybody involved, musicians, producer, engineers, were genius 😄 Back to this Allen Zentz episode, the mic sounds faint, far away compared to the Bob Ludwig ep mic , which gives a much more rounded, richer sound. I also have The Stones Tattoo You.

Ah...Silver & Gold. Like a warm blanket, always there to calm and soothe the soul. I bought it on CD when it came out and have it on wax as well. Great choice in a spotlight album. I agree 100% on “are you passionate” as well. I don’t hear much about that one either. I have that on vinyl as well and it is incredible. I will confess though, big Booker T & the MGs fan here as well, so that record really hits a sweet spot for me.

Thanks as always for your insight!

Regarding the CCR album, the mastering may be fine but over the years there has been criticism over the mix itself, especially "Proud Mary": technically it's stereo but there's hardly any separation. The same thing has been said about "Bad Moon Rising" and "Lodi" from the GREEN RIVER LP- those songs might as well be mono! Both GREEN RIVER and BAYOU COUNTRY are in need of remixing for a decent 180 mg LP rerelease

Another excellent video. I have 3 of these (Bowie, Steely Dan & Queen) and can definitely attest to their sonic excellence. My copy of Pretzel Logic has the black ABC/rainbow box label with AZ in the dead wax on both sides. The AZ Station to Station is definitely the one to find, I tried several represses and the 180g reissue and the original AZ slays them all.

Another great video, Tim. Keep on rockin' out these informative, and very much enjoyable "stories in a video" productions. If someone is too OCD and lacks patience, I suggest they go elsewhere. I have found most of the David Bowie LPs from the 70s to have incredibly good sound. Same for Steely Dan. I don't have that CCR LP "Bayou Country", but my original copies of "Cosmos Factory" and "Pendulum", also on the deep blue Fantasy label sound horrid. So do a lot of their original 45s on Fantasy. I believe it's more due to the cheap, noisy vinyl that some of their LPs were pressed on. It's obvious just by looking at it. With Kiss- at the time Dressed to Kill came out- as you correctly noted- Kiss was pretty much broke. Their first self-titled LP sold poorly- even after adding the song "Kissin' Time" and re-issuing it. They were quickly running out of options and money. But it was one song on that LP that ended up saving them, and of course that was "Rock and Roll All Nite". You are correct in pointing out that their LPs were not noted for audiophile quality sound. To my ears, they have a fairly flat, but clean, sound, which I'm sure was not accidental. They wanted kids to buy these and crank them up. It wasn't until "Rock and Roll Over" and "Destroyer" came out that their LP sound quality improved noticeably. I very much enjoy your videos and channel. Keep up the good work!

Hi there! Yep, I have a room tour video in my list of vids. I purchased my Sony PS-X70 about 10 years ago and it's still my "workhorse". I've had it recalibrated about 4 years ago when I bought my current house and took control of the 3rd bedroom :-). I've had thoughts about going with a modern table and have casted about for opinions on various forums - nearly everyone says DON'T change and you would have to spend $2K to get a modern equivalent. So.....I think I'm good for now - it sounds great with what I am doing at the moment. I did recently put in a Nagaoka MP-100 cart which also sounds great.

Here you go (from Discogs)-- There are two different labels both came out the same year. 1st Pressing: This version with black labels, where all tracks (including credits) have two lines of text (excluding B5 which has three). This is different than Pretzel Logic or Pretzel Logic, both black labels where multiple tracks have three lines of text on both sides. 2nd Pressing: See Pretzel Logic for Santa Maria pressing with with same text layout, but having the multi-colored concentric circles ABC label.

We recorded the instrumental tracks of 3 songs, but never finished cause Allen got busted for coke.. 1 day there was Yellow Police tape around the studio & his partner said they might lose everything cause Allen was the $$ Man for a Biker Gang that was busted smuggling coke across the border & they Ratted him out. I did the 3 songs[CD] @ Mumia Rally @ Fed Building & Lisa Bonet was MC, & Lenny K. stole one of them named "Flyaway". P.S. Allen & my drummer Freddy used to do coke together & I would have to complain that Freddy was playing to fast & rushing the beat, so I would have to make sure they waited until the drum tracks were done.. When Freddy found out that Allen was Gay, he blurted out that I said I wouldn't play with a Gay guy [my Bad] & I said if it was good enough for the Beatles, it was good enough for me.. You guys that worked with him should help me finish this project/material. One Love .. Hendy & Thee Rockafarians

P.S. You mentioned in the vid that Allen died in 1992. I believe it was in the Fed. Prison that he passed.. I hate to be the bearer of Bad news, but such is life. R.I.Producing... One Love..

Enjoy your content but the intro music makes me rush to turn down the volume until it ends!

@@Universityofvinyl It may just a car thing. I'm on the road a lot and listen/view by playing my iPhone through the car's sound system. The first few notes of the musical intro are soft but when the bass kicks in, it is LOUD, causing me to turn down the volume and then your voice comes in and its time to turn it back up. Just a minor thing that I've adjusted to. Keep up the good work. I'm about a decade older than you so we have some overlap in our musical preferences.
