#1 That was quite clearly the plan. Tall cylinders are particularly tricky to bring down. The safest method is typically to notch them like a tree, leaving a small amount of material in the back for the hinge. The biggest risk with cylinders is that they sometime just squat down and don't topple, creating a really unstable structure. In fact, most cylinders will squat down at some point during the demolition. It is important to get them moving in the right direction before gravity just breaks the hinge and take over. That shot at 7:03 is actually a very good exemple of how most tall cylindrical structures are brought down. There's a missing triangle. As soon as the front part of the hinge is blown out, the structure starts moving, and soon after, the hinge breaks and the structure squats down. 11:20 What happens here is that the bottom is moving faster than the top which is why it buckles and breaks in several pieces. They are also accelerating in different directions. The bottom has toppling motion while the top is just falling almost straight down. 13:40 They probably did expect the building to roll over. The motion gives a lot of clues. The heavy wing motors and winch drums are still are still at the top of the head frame. It rolls because of all that weight.

@Bill Kikstra There was a concrete coaling tower built straddling the Union Pacific mainline tracks in Hanna Wyoming. After the last regular steam engines were retired, the UP decided to remove the tower by blasting two of the legs, intending that the tower would fall outwards, away from the railroad tracks. The blasted legs were overshot, and dug in under the tracks as the tower leaned over and fell, blocking the east-west mainline for several days while the tower was broken up, removed, and the tracks were relaid. Several strongly worded messages were sent over the company telegraph lines, believe me.
@chugwaterjack4458
@chugwaterjack4458 Жыл бұрын
@Bill Kikstra The railroads still ran on telegraph/teletype in the '60's when this happened. Any engineering or traveling crews were required to send in their overnight location. This was called "tying up." Telephones left no traceable records. Really, just a slightly more cumbersome method of operation compared to texting and email.

As a german I can say some things: It's right that on some of the Autobahns you can drive as fast as you want(there's a speed limit on some parts like starts endings and building projekts), but when you brake the law by crashing another car or do a streetrace, the punishment is harder depending on how fast you drove. It's called "Fahrlässigkeit" which means that you don't pay attention and risk a crash or so. But if you are carefull you could brake the soundbarrier. Have a good one

Germans (in general) are very safe drivers - no matter the speed. On the Autobahn they are aware of most other traffic, in front ánd behind, and will anticipate far better than I've witnessed in Belgium, France, the Netherlands and the UK. And of course it helps their motorways are quite spacious, unlike the Dutch, where every small town seems to have at least 2 sets of exits, and consequently traffic halts far more often.

My husband was stationed in Vicenza Italy back in the mid 80's. We drove on the Autostrada in Italy and the Autobahn quite often when going on trips. We drove around 80 mph because we weren't comfortable going any faster. It was amazing how fast other cars would pass us. And if you are in the "fast" or "passing" lane and see a car approaching from behind flashing their headlights, you better finish passing cars and move over. They don't mess around with being behind a slower vehicle. One good thing about that is we didn't see a lot of cars swerving in and out of lanes like we do in the US.

The Autobahn bridges near Siegen are currently being replaced by new ones. Then the old bridges will have to go. Everything is going according to plan in Siegen. The bridge over the city will be dismantled in the future and not blown up. But further north, a Autobahn bridge had to be closed before a new bridge could be built. The locals in Lüdenscheid now have daily traffic jams on their doorstep. Total chaos. Even the shops are suffering because the customers can't come. 50% loss of sales. And the demolition of the old bridge and new construction has not yet begun.

The gasometer was intended to fall on its side. They even had a especially prepared surface for it to fall on (5 meters of loose soil to cushion the impact). Steel structures are notoriously difficilt to make fall into themselves predictably, cutting a slot on one side and making them fall into a defined direction is much easier and safer.

It is true that motorways in rural Germany usually have no speed limits, but they often only have two lanes and trucks are restricted to 50mph (80km/h), which means you might not get much chance to do your vehicle's top speed. Couldn't help but notice that the new bridge was identical to the one being demolished.

At 6"15, the older bridge looks IDENTICAL in design to the new one. So why wasn't it repaired? If the new one is so similar, (reinforced concrete ) will it have a go down in a few years too? Seems like a huge waste. All steel construction might have lasted longer- as freezing doesn't affect it as badly as concrete with entrapped water.

The bridge had to pe replaced becaus of the nowadays much higher rate of traffic especialy heavy Trucks than when it was first planed and build. The new bridge looks similar but is much stronger and had an additionel lane in both directions, new 3 lanes + shoulder, and could withstand much more traffic than the old one. The Climate Waits for No One Thirty years ago, a friend of mine got into the green energy business and tried to pull me into it. I asked him what for, it isn’t serious. He said, “You have no idea how much money is being poured into it. Everyone wants in on it, politicians, financiers, businesspeople, the lot.” He was right, of course. Yet, no one wants to promote green energy in order to save the planet, but only to swell up their pockets even more. The declarations, therefore, remain in the assembly hall where they are stated, necessary actions are ignored, and the climate waits for no one: It will keep deteriorating. This week in Glasgow, Scotland, the 26th UN Climate Change Conference is taking place. Officially, it aims to “bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.” In reality, the countries plan to do the exact opposite. This year’s UN Production Gap Report, which tracks the discrepancy between governments’ planned fossil fuel production and actual global production levels, states the following: “Despite increased climate ambitions and net-zero commitments, governments still plan to produce more than double the amount of fossil fuels in 2030 than what would be consistent with limiting global warming to 1.5°C [2.7°F].” Energy sources and technologies do change, but not according to what is best for the planet. It changes according to the interests of politicians and money moguls, and it never benefits the planet or the majority of its inhabitants, namely all of us. Since the climate waits for no one, eventually, it will catch up with us. Earth is a closed system, and in a closed system, there are consequences to exploitation: it hurts the abuser as well as the abused. I don’t know when or at what cost, but eventually, we will all have to realize that we cannot take beyond what we need. We cannot keep exploiting Earth selfishly and thoughtlessly because it will turn against us. Earth is like a submarine: there is only so much oxygen on board. If some crew members take more than their quota, the rest will not have enough, they will die, and the submarine will sink along with those who exceeded their quota. We need constant reminders that we are one system, and we are all dependent on each other. We need to genuinely grasp that selfishness hurts us just as being exploitative hurts others. If we constantly remind ourselves that we are interdependent, we will behave with more consideration, and we will avoid the punitive impact of climate change. The other option is to keep working as the UN’s Production Gap Report states that we are planning to work, and suffer nature’s unforgiving response. I hope we wise up in time because everyone will pay the price for this mistake.

@ 7:30: That's not entirely true. On the autobahn you can drive as fast as you want when there is no local speed limit in place, that is true. However it is a specifically marked network of multilane roads, not just "out side the city". There is also your average country road, the "Bundesstraße". Usually what you find at first when you leave a city. The speed limit there is 100 km/h. (62 mph, and again, local limits might be lower)
