I grew up in an Italian neighborhood in Kansas City, the River Quay back then, my Nana's family were from Castelvetrano Sicily, she called the Godfather movies her stories, Papa worked nights for the Railroad and her and I would stay up all night and watch the entire trilogy, those are cherished memories.

50 Years ago I was an 18 year old from Queens NY. This movie, in my opinion, is at the top of the all time greatest list. It was a much different time in our Country. My first exposure to The Godfather was when I was 18. Just dropped out of university and I was lost. When I saw the movie, I truly felt the passion of Italian Americans and how it relates to Latinos and our American Dream but I connected with Vito because he was a great father. Better than mine and the lessons I learned forced me to take action and be independent as much as I can.

No one, and I literally mean no one, has ever seen any movie anywhere near the amount of times I watched the Godfather. I LOVE that movie. The house used in the movie, where Vito lived, is an actual house on Staten Island. My grandfather built that house. Being from Italy, my grandfather hated that movie, and how he hated they used a house he built for that movie. In an interview with Francis Ford Coppola, the reason they chose that house was because he felt it looked like the type of house an Italian family would want to live in. I remember laughing when I heard that comment, thinking my grandfather hated they used that house and the only reason they used it was because how he built it.

My favorite movie of all time. I haven't watched it in a couple years, but if I sat down and watched it right now I could probably still recite each line along with it. I've always had at least one Godfather poster on my wall since I was a kid. Such an iconic film.

I watched this movie for the first time at 13, almost 20 years ago. My parents always told me that movies and music were art and I was a good enough kid to not emulate what I saw or heard in movies or music. That being said, the godfather is my second favorite movie of all time, scarface being my favorite. I liked al in scarface, but his portrayal of Michael Corleone is what actually made me fall in love with the man's work.

It's really impressive how you talk about the lifestyle, without glorifying it. It's better to learn from other's mistakes, and adapt those lessons. I know I really enjoyed the Godfather films, and the true stories behind it make it so much more interesting.

Michael, I don’t remember how many times I saw The Godfather, but it is one of those movies that if I am watching TV and changing channels, if I come across it, many times I will leave it on and watch it. It didn’t matter how far into the movie, I would see it through to the end.

I remember my parents took me to see it when it came out. I was only twelve but for some reason, I was able to convince them to take me. My mother was fascinated with the book, and I still have the first edition today, looking like it was never read.

I was able to see The Godfather in a movie theater a month ago as part of the 50th Anniversary of its release. I was 1 year old when the movie was originally released, so I only saw it on video prior to that. Seeing it on the big screen was well worth it. The Godfather, Parts I and II, are the two best movies ever made in my opinion. Thanks for pointing out the similarities with real life, Michael!

Apocalypse Now, Godfathers, Rumble Fish) and Godfather author and fellow screenwriter, Mario Puzo, specifically said they lived by. Puzo based the Godfather on his Italian mother and never met a mobster when he wrote it. Coppola and him turned down drinks, meals and meetings with everyone from Columbo to John Gotti. In fact John Gotti came to the set and Francis refused to meet him. They did not want their story tainted by interaction. The story was based solely from their mind and loose research. Brilliant film and book

I’m 54 and have read everything I could about the mob and the different people involved since I was a kid . Ironically until about a year ago I had never seen The Godfather even though I had heard about it for decades.

I was eight years old when this masterpiece came out and I remember the commercials and the ads that were playing on TV back then and I was hooked and wanted to see it badly. I’m familiar with that culture and I would go to the local library and listen to the soundtrack on vinyl with headphones….both sides…every other day as a release from my craving!😎

I can't believe it's been 50 years! I was 6 when it came out. My parents and uncle and aunt went to see it, and we sat home with a babysitter. This is a timeless movie, and one of, if not THE best!

A fascinating presentation of movie history, Michael. Although Joe Colombo did personally get involved in the making of The Godfather, in my opinion, he made it better. The movie does tend to glamorize the Life, but because the film took the point of view of The Family, that decision was a sound one. One other interesting fact about The Godfather that many people don't know was that author Mario Puzi did not personally know any people in the Life when he wrote the book and all of his material was drawn from secondary sources, such as published accounts, and so forth. In many ways, The Godfather is one case where the film was better than the book. Mario worked with Francis to improve the story, arc, action, and dialogue, so they had that opportunity to improve on the book. But I believe another reason the film was better than the book was that Mario, Francis, and several of the actors did get to meet and work with people from the Life, lending greater authenticity to the final film.

Most certainly one of my favorite films and fifty years since it was made it's held in such high regard. Thank you Michael for this and of course, all of your other video.

I remember sitting in my soon-to-be first car reading “The Godfather” because my Mother wouldn’t allow me to see the movie. She didn’t know I had the book. Needless to say, I finished it and Loved it. Fast forward 10 years and I saw the movie too!

The Godfather films are sort of a rite of passage. Everyone has to see it once, and when they do, they'll have a new perspective on life by the end. I watched it with a group of friends many years ago who have never seen it, and we talked about what we took away from it all the way until morning.

The Godfather was a lifechanger. It was the FIRST rated R movie I ever watched under the age of 12. Secondly, it and Godfather II were the ONLY FILMS I could stay up and watch on a school night. Matter of fact, my dad MADE ME watch it on a school night every time it came on network television. "THIS is HISTORY." he would say. RIP, Dad. I will pass this tradition I got from you to my children as well.

"Godfather" was great! I was a little kid when it came out. I saw it for the first time on TV in the early 70s. The sequel was just as good--if not better--than the original, which is unusual for a sequel. I loved Godfather III, too!

Loved The Godfather. I actually lived on E 3rd and Ave X around the corner from Carlo Gambino. Was living there when he passed and the service was at Our Lady Of Grace. I loved living in that neighborhood, always felt very safe knowing we were all protected. He was alao a good friend of mine godfather.

You should do a sit down with your brother John. Hopefully you can see him again someday. I hadn't seen my sister in 20 years. I always wanted to see her again. Then one day out of the blue she calls me. It shocked me so much that I just hung up on her. Then later on I got word that she passed away. And she was only 51 years old. I always wanted to see her again but figured there would always be enough time. Not letting her speak really haunts me today . Even though she wasn't a good person and did bad things, she was still my sister and I should have let her speak .

There’s a line in the rom-com movie “Serendipity” that goes something like: “Godfather 2 is perhaps the greatest movie ever made, but cannot be fully appreciated without seeing The Godfather first.” Whoever wrote that script knew what they were talking about!

My parents grew up in the former ☭ Soviet Union (they lived in modern day 🇺🇦 Ukraine) and during the Glasnost era during the late 1980s, my father recalls The Godfather as being one of the first ever Western movies 🎬 he watched back in the USSR. Today, we now live in 🇳🇿 New Zealand and The Godfather is still one of his favourite "feel good" movies.

I have watched all the Godfather movies but the first one is the best in my opinion. I love listening to your stories, incredible insight, and intelligence concerning the movies and how they relate to real life events! You are one highly intelligent and intersting man!
