Explore the hidden gem of Kristiansand, Norway's fifth largest city, nestled on the picturesque southern coastline. While it may not be as well-known as some of Norway's other destinations, it's a favorite among locals for its family-friendly attractions and laid-back summer vibe.
Kristiansand is often overlooked by international tourists, but that's beginning to change with the recent addition of a ferry route from the Netherlands. Cruise ship visitors and those arriving by ferry from Denmark have long known the secret of this charming city, which offers a perfect blend of city life and natural beauty.

Kristiansand Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Agder and Telemark in the Church of Norway. It is a Neo-Gothic church completed in 1885 and designed by the architect Henrik Thrap-Meyer.
It is the third cathedral built in Kristiansand and one of the largest cathedrals in Norway. It is 70 m (230 ft) long and 39 m (128 ft) wide, and the only tower is 70 m (230 ft) in height. Originally the cathedral had 2,029 seats and room for 1,216 standees, but seating has now been reduced to 1,000.
A great way to start exploring Kristiansand in Southern Norway is a visit to the old fish quay Fiskebrygga, which in recent years has turned into a lively restaurant area. Close by is the architectural landmark Kilden Performing Arts Center and the recreational area of Odderøya.
In the city center, called Kvadraturen, you will find more than 400 shops and plenty of cozy cafes and restaurants.

Otterdalsparken, also called "Nupenparken" by the locals, including granite fountains made by Norwegian artist Kjell Nupen.
Kristiansand fortress was finished in 1672 and formed a part of King Christian IV's plan for the defense of Kristiansand when the city was founded in 1641. The architect of the fortress was quartermaster general Willem Coucheron. It was built on an islet, about 100 yards from shore. Today the fortress is connected to the mainland.
The only time the fortress has been in battle was against a British fleet force, led by HMS Spencer (1800) in 1807 during the Napoleonic Wars. One of the very few remaining larger warships under Danish-Norwegian command was the ship of the line HDMS Prinds Christian Frederik with 70 cannons that was in the eastern harbor of Kristiansand. Captain Stopford on board HMS Spencer ordered to sail toward the city and announced in a letter that he wanted to take over the HDMS Prinds Christian Fredrik, and threatened to open fire on the city if the ship were not disclosed. When the ships approached, they were met by fierce resistance from Christiansholm Fortress. The attack was repulsed by massive gunfire and the British sailed instead to the abandoned Fredriksholm Fortress, which was blown up and destroyed.
Posebyen in Kristiansand is a lovely little city community and the only thing left after the big city fire in 1892. Take a walk around the idyllic streets. Posebyen is one of the biggest collections of small and old wood-construction houses. In the summer there is a market on Saturdays.

This was beautiful!! I love all the promenads and green space. Your drone footage was spectacular. It's amazing how well the city built back up after the fire. I loved the cathedral, too. It looks like Matthew really enjoyed this walk. Thanks for taking us along!!

Never thought of that way. Lol!! this video to put up took a while. My editing software wasn’t working so that’s why it looks a little rough around the edges.

Kristiansand is the best, at summer time ;) btw this drone operator is breaking the law and would be fined about 1500-2000 USD and the drone would be taken, if the police had been there.
