Because Breath of the Wild is on this list, I just want to let you know that it is my dad's favorite game of all time. He picked up a Switch last year and started playing it and fell completely in love with it. My dad is in his 70s and has pretty much exclusively played stuff like Tetris, Dr. Mario, with the occasional FPS thrown in. Medal of Honor: Frontline, the GameCube 007 games, and the Halo series are among his favorites. However, after he discovered RDR2, he wanted to play more modern titles, and so wanted to branch out into the Nintendo side of things. He struggled for a while with BotW. He loved the sense of exploration, but it's actually generally the difficulty curve of the game that i think he had the most trouble with. There was a whole history of 3rd-person action games he just never quite learned the language of! But he persevered, learned, and he loved the game so much that after he beat it (he and mom said he cried, something my dad does not do terribly frequently), he started it over again, saying "I know I could just continue where I left off...but I want to start over now that I know how to do it all better." To me, that's the magic of that game. It speaks to a primal "set my own goals in this game" that life tends to present you, allowing problem solving and planning to happen in a closed, but wide, environment. I hope you're able to "get" the game. Perseverance I think is the key. Keep at it, when you feel so inclined, and make sure to set your own extrinsic goals, because that makes the game maximally rewarding. Love the video, friend! I need to make one of these myself...

Crono this is an INCREDIBLE story! I was nearly tearing up reading it 🥺 I love how he had a growing curiosity for games after playing Red Dead 2 (another massive game!) and decided to give Breath of the Wild a try. What perseverance indeed. Lots of folks in the comments have given plenty of encouragement and reasons to go back to BotW, but now your dad by extension is giving me all the encouragement I could ever hope to receive! Perhaps during paternity leave I'll be bouncing between Dragon Quest III HD and Breath of the Wild. Both would make for fantastic experiences, and even better memories to look back on years from now knowing I played both during a very special time in my life. Also, major shoutout to Crono Sr. for playing the real gems like Medal of Honor Frontline and the golden age of Bond games. He's a real one!!

That's another one of my fears with both BotW and TotK! Especially since I enjoy 100%ing maps like Assassin's Creed and Far Cry, I know it would be a major temptation/distraction in those two games as well. 1 Shrine at a time I suppose! Thanks for watching and commenting, it's much appreciated!

If you care about story, play BOTW. The story is pretty good considering the open world format. TOTK on the other hand is a mess in that regard, but it has interesting mechanics and a nice physics engine to play around, but it's a LOT more tedious and it's building system is quite limited. I think you should try completing BOTW, and if you LOVE it, maybe play TOTK for the building system until you get bored.

@@josephmorales3478 I was surprisingly addicted to the city building mechanic! It struck such a perfect balance of not being too complex, consistently rewards your effort when you put a bit more time into it, just such a joy to play. My dream for you to finish Sekiro dies with a good video. I can accept that lol for Zelda if lack of progression due to scale is the main issue I’d start with the first over Tears. Tears adds another bottom level which further spreads out your possibilities. Chunking out activities like lighting beacons or completing shrines is a great way to scale down the game into bit sized sessions

Rumor has it that Linkin Park actually wrote the lyrics “I tried so hard and got so far, but in the end it didn’t even matter” after playing an early build of Sekiro. If Linkin Park can’t beat it, that game is just sadly not for me! 😅 Love the strategy for BotW though. That’s definitely what I need to do! Hopefully will get back to it soon!

Love to see new Rusty videos pop up! I bounced off Ni No Kuni for similar reasons. It felt like a 10/10 RPG with a 5/10 battle system. I kinda felt like I was missing something so maybe giving it another chance is something I should do as well. A game i recently put down after several tries is Cyberpunk 2077. I tried picking it up again after the 2.0 update this year. I honestly feel overwhelmed by all the systems, menus and just overall stuff in the game. I know if i persevere it will click and ill end up loving the game but I don't know when ill be going back again. Looking forward to the next one!

That is honestly the PERFECT way to describe Ni No Kuni! It really had all the pieces of a 10/10 RPG...except that battle system 😅 I'd still like to give it another chance as well, but the battles don't excite me to say the least! Cyberpunk is such an interesting one! I finally got a copy earlier this year and have been excited to play it, especially coming away from Starfield last year and just really loving the first person shooter RPG experience. It's nice to hear about your experience before starting it, though. I imagine the games systems will take some serious getting used, but I have to imagine driving around the city is quite the experience. Hopefully when you go back to it the game really clicks! Thanks for watching, my friend, we've got some exciting videos coming really soon! :)

Just came across your channel, like the vibe and the content - have subscribed 🙂Anyway, I dropped Skyrim after 10 hours. It really just wasn't doing it for me. Got to the first big city and did the first big part of the main quest but then... stopped. And never went back. Picked up Hades instead and became insanely addicted to that, meaning Skyrim had no chance... will I go back? Meh.

Skyrim is definitely not for everyone. Similar to BotW, it can be overwhelming with how many things there are to do, the number of distractions you'll discover when traveling from quest to quest, etc. If you weren't feeling it after 10 hrs, it might not be your thing, but might be worth giving another chance down the road! That happened to me when I dropped Oblivion years ago, came back to it, and now it's one of my favorite games of all time. Thanks for watching and for the very kind words and subscription, it's much appreciated!

I took months to get used to BOTW, and then entire weeks to just grasp the game mechanics. My motivation was to make it story driven, to focus on the memories (I played in Spanish first time, then tried a second time in English). Then the beasts. An in both BOTW and TOTK, it is ok to try and see if we can bare the difficulty or prepare more. I spent so many hours preparing stuff like upgrades and potions, it turned out I over did the preparations for a bit. Also, please, play TOTK once you beat BOTW, personal recommendation as I love TLOZ, and still feel overwhelmed with both massive interconnected games.

So many folks have commented about their approach to playing BotW, and it really is amazing to see all of the different ways people play the game. I know I'll have to find my own unique rhythm, but focusing on the memories you're creating while playing + the story is a great way to go about it! I'm sure it'll be a LONG time before I roll credits on both BotW and TotK, but I certainly hope to do it someday. Thanks for sharing your experience and checking out my video!

The 2 big games that everyone loves but I ended up dropping were Sonic Mania and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. With Sonic Mania, I loved the visuals, music, and the gameplay was pretty fun, except when it came to the save points. Some bosses were very hard and annoying to fight with only like 3 rings, and when I died the fact that I had to start the whole act over again if you ran out of lives is just dumb to me. I wish there was some way to create a save point and not have the lives system that resets back your entire progress! I just ended up dropping the game as a result. With Ocarina, everyone says it is one of the best Zelda games, and after my experience I think it hasn't aged all that well. Really, really slow start and it is extremely easy to get lost pursuing your objective. I got to the Goron village and didn't know where the hell I was supposed to go, so I dropped the game and was happy to be done with it. I was just frustrated because everyone praises this game to high heaven, and I walked away annoyed and frustrated with the game. I think it is dated and has issues that people just like to ignore for newer fans to the franchise. I got into Zelda by playing Breath of the Wild when it came out, my favorite game I've ever played. Since then, I've played Skyward Sword HD, Link's Awakening remake, and Tears of the Kingdom. I totally understand the people being angry that you didn't finish a Zelda game, I've done the same. While I'll probably never go back to OoT unless there is some major remake or something, I would encourage you to get back into Breath of the Wild. It is amazing and after having finished Tears of the Kingdom, I still think Breath of the Wild is a better game and will give you a more cohesive experience overall. Plus, if you finish Breath of the Wild and want to go back to Tears, it'll make you appreciate all of the new abilities and upgrades and the story context a lot more imo.

I think folks that grew up during the N64 era, it's much easier to be forgiving for mechanics that haven't aged very well. Mario 64 is a big example for me. Still one of the best games ever, but it's also fair to criticize that the camera controls render the game unplayable for many today. The two don't have to be mutually exclusive, but there are super fans among us that will say differently lol I grew up watching my Uncle playing OoT, and he would occasionally give me the controller and I played the game a bit myself. While I never finished it as a kid, getting a copy of the 3DS Remake just as I went to college and playing it to completion was a magical experience for me. I was incredibly nostalgic for the music, and it felt like a full circle moment completing the game as an adult when I never dreamed of doing that as a kid. I cannot imagine playing BotW as my first Zelda game and then going back to OoT, though, so I cannot for a second blame you for not enjoying it. I definitely have plans to go back to BotW and eventually play it to completion, and as I've said to many folks here in the comment section, I think it would be a lot of fun to record a few videos capturing/reflecting on my experience as I return to it. So stay tuned for that (some day...lol)! Thanks so much for watching and for leaving a comment. It's much appreciated!

@@RE-LOOIE You definitely make some very valid points. I definitely can respect the legacy and impact that OoT had on both Zelda as a series and the industry as a whole. I can see why people love and respect the game, but personally it is tough for me to overlook some of the tedious backtracking and very slow pace of the game. That's just why I get so upset when I see people just blindly praising the game because OoT definitely has glaring issues that some people just ignore. I have made my peace with putting the game down, but I'm definitely not opposed to trying the game again if there is some official remake or something like that on the switch 2 where things would be more majorly enhanced for the modern era.

I have been trying to find the right Souls/Souls-like game to get into. I’ve asked a few people about Sekiro and they all say it’s hella difficult…like hard hard. As cool as the premise is, I’ll respectfully leave that game alone. Days Gone was okay. I stuck with it and saw the credits roll. The pacing is all over the place and it’s way longer than what it should be but there was something about the monotony of the gameplay that just kept me going. Also kinda liked the narrative as well. I keep saying one of these days I’m going to get back to Ni No Kuni. I remember playing it a bit on the PS3 but never rolled the credits.

I think Dark Souls 3 would be the perfect jumping in point for you, Steph, especially if you're looking for a Soul-like that doesn't feel stiff and kind of clunky nowadays like the original Dark Souls 1 and 2 (the die hard fans will come after me for saying this...but it's just the truth lol). The first boss right out of the gate is a skill check, but I have no doubt you can beat him. You've beaten harder bosses before! :) I also have no doubt that I would easily get sucked into the monotony of the gameplay in Days Gone, especially for how many hours I've put into the Assassin's Creed games over the years. That's one I'll need to go back to for sure. Thanks for watching, Steph!!

I played Pokemon Moon, and while I was enjoying it to some extent (toucannon is one of the most fun pokemon I've ever had on a team) I just wasn't really into it after a while. I know generally where I left off, and I was having a lot of fun with it at the time, but something really made me put it down... and I think it might have been that I was just done with Pokemon. I just feel like it jumped the shark ages ago. I still like certain Pokemon, but really wish things could just be simpler with it. For example, I think a great direction Pokemon could go and hasn't is the cozy game direction. What would be more fun than a game about living alongside Pokemon out in the country, growing your own berries, vegetables, herbs, cooking with them, selling them; having Pokemon help you, catching Pokemon to help the other townspeople, even having an interactive element with other random players (or just keep it contained in the game like Rune Factory) with a "county fair" where you have your crops or dishes you've cooked or Pokemon judged... etc etc. That's what it would take to get me to come back to Pokemon, I think.

Breath of the Wild was very much a one and done for me. I did give Tears of the Kingdom a shot, but after putting roughly about 60 hours in. I became fatigued and never wanted to go back to it. This is probably due to the over saturation of both BOTW and TOTK's world. Between both games, not much has changed other than a few new mechanics and two new levels of that world that just weren't very interesting to me at all. The point is I was done looking at it and I was SUPER tired of the breaking mechanic and dying in one hit, no matter how many hearts I had...

Ni No Kuni, I felt the same way. I loved everything except the battle system and familiar fusion. Battle system felt so clunky. Me: "Esther, why are you doing physical attacks for 1 damage, summon your familiar, you moron." Manually switch to her and summon familiar and do decent damage...only for her to go right back to attacking for 1 damage. Sold it on PS3. I did pick it up again for PS4 super cheap and since I've always loved Level5 games, so I'll probably try it again.

I love this topic, we all have those games that didn't quite click or we just feel like we are missing something. I can't blame anyone for moving on from a modern FromSoft game. They are huge commitments that take time to really click with its combat and intricate systems. That brings me to Demon Souls (PS3), I remember I tried to give that many tries and would get a little further each time but always hit a roadblock that I didn't feel like overcoming. Maybe with the PS5 version I can change that... The Ni No Kuni pains me but also the die hard rpg fan in me actually gets why the combat might not appeal to everyone. It's pretty slow combat early on and that subtle disconnect of not directly controlling your familiar's and instead commanding them like pikmin is a very acquired taste. But the story is so endearing and heartwarming, music is stunning and the world design is lovely. I enjoyed Ni No Kuni 2 with its slightly slower paced "tales of" battle system and the world design was really strong still, but the story didn't leave as much of a impact and the kingdom building was not something that appealed too much to me, besides being a neat little diversion.

I felt the same way about Demon Souls when I played it on PS3. The lack of consistent checkpoints/bon fires was infuriating, and I thought the sense of direction and where to go next was always confusing. While these things don't change in the Remake, I still thoroughly enjoyed it and played the game to completion (may have needed to consult a guide every now and again, though). I'd definitely recommend giving it another try when you're in the mood for the Soul-like experience. Including Ni no Kuni pains me as well! 😭 I want to finish the game so badly. Between you and Blink encouraging me, I think I need to dust off my old save and see if the battle system will click a little better for me this time. AC Unity is an interesting one! I played it for about 5 hrs and dropped it as well. Scaling buildings and the overall AC parkour might honestly be the best in Unity, but I didn't love the Hitman-like way of approaching missions. Hopefully you enjoy the rest of your time with Ocarina! I never finished it as a kid, but always watched my Uncle play. My take on Breath of the Wild, and any game one is having a hard time picking back up: if you need to convince yourself to do so, then it’s not important to you now; play something else. My experience with BotW is that every shrine blended itself into repetition over and over again in order to even have enough stamina and heart; and my excuse was that I was going to have fun once I prepared myself enough; and it became this massive shore of boredom, for me… I dropped it before the fight with Ganon. It is a great game; it has great mechanics; the story is awesome, but this experience is not The Legend of Zelda for me.

That's such a great callout. That's the approach I'm kind of taking. Until I really get the itch to go back, I'm just allowing it to comfortably sit in the backlog. I remember when I played Ghost of Tsushima for the first time, I felt like I had to almost force myself to keep playing during those earlier hours. I just wasn't in the mood for that kind of game when it launched, but went back to it months later when I was in the mood to play it and it ended up becoming my GOTY in 2020. The big one for me is Final Fantasy VII. I originally bought the game on PS3 and didnt get very far. I bought it again on Switch years later hoping that it would grab me the second time around and got out of Midgar but soon after I dropped it again. I really dont know why but I just can't seem to commit to it 😅 I've never really liked the look of PS1 games but I am by no means a graphics snob! Maybe I should just go for the remake when I eventually get a PS5 and the full release is out 🤔 Great video as always Rusty! Pokémon Sun was the worst IMO! Too many tutorials 🤦‍♀️

I can actually relate with the original Final Fantasy VII as well! I remember getting a used copy when I was about 9 or 10 (shortly before I played Kingdom Hearts for the first time), but I just didn't understand the game's mechanics as a kid. I wish I would have played it when I was about 14 or 15 because that could have kickstarted my love for RPGs sooner, but I think my love of RPGs was always meant to start with Kingdom Hearts 1! Many games on the PS1 have not aged well, whether graphically or the controls, so I can't blame you there. I think playing the Remake Trilogy is the way to go at this point, and then maybe some day curiosity will strike again and you can go back to the original. They've done such a fantastic job with Remake and Rebirth, so I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts when you get around to them, Dana! Thanks for watching as always!!

Pokémon legends arceus. I don't know why so many people were convinced that catching 40 bidoofs would be even remotely fun. It feels so weird seeing people praise that game so much when it's probably the least engaging open world game I've played.

If you look at it as a open world game (which it isnt) then sure. But if you look at it as a mainline Pokémon game, it introduced enough of a shake up to the normal formula along with the time period difference was a nice change to what previous Pokémon titles were. Does it have problems? Of course it does.

I can definitely agree in some ways that the hype and love surrounding Arceus left me scratching my head when I played it for about 5 hrs. I don't think Pokémon has quite nailed the true "next gen" feeling Pokémon game yet for Switch. Violet/Scarlet I loved, but the polish of those games is so jarring while playing and impossible to completely ignore. Arceus felt so empty (towns/fields/villages), but I genuinely loved the idea, setting and the MUSIC was fantastic. I'm hoping the Legends series is something they continue to iterate (or evolve 😏) on, because I think it could be something special on the successor Switch console. The thing is though BotW isn’t a Witcher 3 or Persona 5, you can take the game at your own pace, that’s why it’s so great. I really encourage you to give it your full attention an just play for an hour or two.

I'm definitely planning to go back to BotW, just a matter of when! My comparison to Witcher 3 and Persona 5 was less about how the games play, and more about how daunting it can feel to start given the amount of time it takes to complete them. I still feel like all 3 fit into that "Intimidating Backlog Game" category, but maybe I'm alone in thinking that way 😅 Thanks for watching!

There is no point to going back to Pokemon Sun. The game was rushed before it was able to be finished. I had the same problem you had when I started playing Pokemon sun and most of the game felt excrutiatingly slow and poorly paced. Then, Ultra Sun came out and it fixed A LOT of the issues, including an improvement of the Soundtrack, a WAY faster tutorial and included tons of missing content and post game. There is really no point in going back to Sun or Moon if you want the Alolan experience, just go right to Ultra versions.

That's a really good point! I didn't even think (and honestly kind of forgot) about the Ultra Sun/Moon games. I think that would definitely need to be the move if I do end up going back to those games. I'm happy to hear the games are much more playable and enjoyable than the base versions. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Sun & Moon and their evolution games in Ultra Sun&Moon are actually great games if you can overlook the fact that there are no arenas. And those games are actually challenging if you are not overleveling like an idiot :D I mean X&Y whould be great games if the inlineskates weren't that annoying and the game actually being hard. But no gym has more than three Pkmn and the whole elite 4 has only 4 Pkmn each. At least the champ got a full team of 6 but all in all X&Y are the weakest games in the main line series. And i'm still upset because I'm sure an game Z could have solved those issues...
