Spirit Guardians is an amazing spell... I got to see a girl absolutely WRECK with a combo using it at the local game store a few weeks ago. She was running a multiclass War Cleric / Kensei Monk, with Sentinel and Spear Mastery; she had Spirit Guardians up and she bottlenecked the crap out of a mob of enemies while the rest of the party rained down death with ranged attacks ftom behind her. With both a druid and a bard behind her to keep her HP topped off and give Inspiration die as needed, all she had to do was smile and stab, lol- nobody was getting by her unscathed! She made me rethink my old, dismissive opinions about the potential of the spear, too... Now I want to run a Kensei monk built around the idea of being a Shaolin-style spear wielder!

My Cleric has saved our party's Wizard's life with Death Ward... He got sucked into a fan trap that did triple his health pool in damage (he rolled the *worst* rolls for HP). My Cleric was next to him as he got sucked in. She grabbed him as he went by and cast Death Ward on him just before she lost her grip on him. It would have been his second death of the campaign, lol. He was grateful.

Best Tier 2 Cleric Spells for Combat. 3 - Spirit Guardians 4 - Banishment 5 - Contagion Best Tier 2 Utility Spells: 3 - Dispel Magic 4 - Stone Shape 5 - Scrying Revivify, Death Ward, and Raise Dead are also amazing obviously! Mass Healing Word and Mass Cure Wounds also deserve an honorable mention.

One of my favourite tactics is to use Spirit Guardians, then wade into battle the next turn with the Dodge Action. You do respectible damage and are surprisingly hard to dislodge with Medium Armor + a Shield.

if you don't want to hit (with spell/wep) you can cast on your self sanctuary. so the enemy has to save twice (WIS) one to attack you, the other for the spirit guardians. plus with your dodge action even if they save the sanctuary they will hit with disadvantage

Sanctuary + Spirit Guardians used to work if you have two PCs, one cast Spirit Guardians first, then the other cast Sanctuary, because Sanctuary breaks only upon casting or attack roll. But presumably due to abusability, the 2018 errata added the line “...or deals damage to another creature, this spell ends.” to curb this type of combo.

Insect Plague is probably one of my favorite cleric spells! Sure, it's not always useful depending on the situation, but on the other hand, you can summon a swarm of angry wasps for your enemies.

I personally keep Stone Shape a really high on my list of utility spells. It can just be used in so many creative ways. I once used It to make a fake Roc egg which our wizard filled via the Creation spell. We traded the 'egg' to a hungry beholder in exchange for an item from its treasue horde. It was an awesome scene. I can guarantee though that you *do not* want to know what a beholder eating a Roc's egg raw looks or sounds like. Especially since our DM had a full week to plan his description and the sound effects!

Our Cleric has ended up not only as the main character but also the artillery. Long list of spells available to him (me) but most of the time he just uses fireball because it does so much damage. The ONE battle he wasn't there for, one of the party died. (I was playing a half-orc Ranger5 Paladin3 that was built for fighting giants, trying to use it to fight a giant dragon that resisted every good attack I had)

This is exactly what I needed! I play a Divine Soul Sorcerer at level 6 and I'm planning on moving her into a support role, so this really helped me plan my spells. Thank you for mentioning Holy Weapon! I hope at some point to pick it up and twin it. Extra 2d8 radiant on two separate fighters and a potential 8d8 nuke? Don't mind if I do! One spell you didn't mention that I've been (ab)using the heck out of is Sending. In our particular campaign, communication is huge, and being able to send messages long distance instantaneously has been exceptionally powerful even in the short time I've had it. It's also had some interesting uses beyond just passing information to important NPCs. This actually just happened yesterday, as a matter of fact. One of our party members rescued a kidnapped NPC who was being held on a different plane. I'd been using Sending for the past couple days to stay in communication with her. When she was brought back, I wasn't sure it was her because a shapechanger had impersonated her in the past. So I was able to verify it was her because she accurately recounted the messages I'd given with my Sending casts.

Hmm... I don't think Holy Weapon can be Twinned, barring DM fiat. Twin metamagic is only eligible for spells that target a single creature, no? Holy Weapon targets an object. This was unfortunately brought to my attention a while back. But it's still a great option nonetheless.

My cleric just picked up Life Transference which I thought is an amazing spell out of Xanathar’s Guide to Everything. You take 4d8 necrotic damage but the damage you took is doubled and given to a target in range. I think thematically it’s amazing also!

I noticed are 3 weapon spells that Clerics, and some other spellcasters, get access to. As you said, Holy Weapon is a spell you can use, but there are 2 others I want to draw attention to Elemental Weapon (3rd level) and Magic Weapon (2nd level). Just like Holy Weapon, these are contraction spells with an hour's worth of duration. Elemental Weapon is great just for its versatility, with the spell you can choose one of 5 damage types for your weapon do, acid, cold, fire, lightning, or thunder, which basically means you can really tailor your attacks to your enemies if you know their weaknesses, however, you only have access to the spell as a Cleric if you take the Forge Domain; as for Magic Weapon, when you "touch a non-magical weapon" you turn into a magical weapon for the duration and it gets a +1 on attack and damage rolls, thankfully, the spell is open to a Cleric of War Domain, Forge Domain, or Arcana Domain. Now, since Holy Weapon is open to all Cleric domains, D&D Beyond didn't show any restrictions, a neat little trick I thought up, assuming you have other people that can cast these spells, is to pile on all these buff spells to a single weapon and just your frontline unit go at it with this super pumped up weapon and go to town on the hostiles, granted, you'll need at least one Forge Domain cleric to make this work. Also, with it being the season, I'm a little disappointed you haven't done a discussion of Halloween themed campaigns/ RPGs that are not D&D that are a good fit for the season. Like I said in a prior comment, the WoD series of games are probably a good fit for this time of year.

Divine Soul Sorcerer in my party used Dispel Magic on a demon that was trying to fly away by means of the Fly spell, and it fell to its death. It was glorious. Great video! Gave me good ideas for the cleric I'm hoping to play soon.

I had a Tempest Cleric for a Dragon Heist/Mad Mage run. With the party being a Barbarian, a Paladin(AC 20-25 +shield spell), and me(AC 20-27 +shield/Shield of Faith). I had decided we needed some support forces so I took Animate Dead. Got a bag of holding and filled it up with bones to make skeletons and had 8 Animated Skeletons that I later was able to replace their shortbows with longbows so I had eight 1d8 +2 attacks as a bonus Action I Stopped at 8 for a few reasons but if you build up to it and don't use any spells above 2nd for anything but Animate Dead you could build an Army of 128 as a cleric just recast to maintain control before you rest that way if you don't have the slots to control all of them you send them out to fight an enemy or instruct them to take no action while you destroy the ones you will lose control of.

For my go-to ranged attack, I like Scorching Ray. It is better than Fireball because you can't accidentally hurt your friends with it who are in melee. And once you can call it at 4th level, it does more D6 damage than Fireball does. Yes, it's not AOR but against one boss enemy, it can do massive damage. It does depend on your to-hit of course but that balances out with the saving throw for Fireball.

I have a Life Domain cleric with 20 natural Wisdom, 21 Strength thanks to a Belt of Hill Giant Strength, and a 23AC... What's good? :D Her motto is "The best healing is never having to heal because everything's dead."

That Sounds like my lvl 19 Celestial Warlock. Has a belt of Fire Giant Strength, Staff of the Magi for extra casting when needed and a +3 Rod of the Pactkeeper so STR= 25 and spell Save= 22. He is a bit light on the Armor (15) so he makes up for that with his 9th lvl Mystic Arcanum being True Polymorph. First use was to become a Planetar and without realizing it became the perfect creature to run the mod with. The Next time was an Adult Bronze Dragon to Combat the Adult Blue Dracolich in the big fight.

@@Scorpious187 That is a fun point to be with a cleric especially if you are rested for the big fight. Right before the big fight you warding bond and death ward your main Melee damage dealer, drop Spirit Guardians on you and then Guardian of Faith over your Melee fighters then stand back with your ranged to protect them while healing.

@@Scorpious187 not too far from how I run my life domain cleric. She's about as tanky as you can get. Hill dwarf, 18 con, toughness & shield mastery feats. And she recently acquired magical Adamantine Plate. Between her and our mountain dwarf Battlemaster we have an extremely difficult to dislodge front line.

Surprised you didn't mention spiritual weapon. I'd argue it's an iconic ATK spell for 5th lvl + Clerics and once you get it, you keep it for life.

They mentioned Spiritual Weapon in their cleric spells for low level (Tier 1). You are absolutely correct in your assessment of that 2nd level spell. Once you get it at 3rd level of cleric you always have it prepared.

I love all the spells mentioned in this video. Cleric is my favorite class and I want to show some love to Scrying wich has been really valuable in the campain I'm now in, Banishment is always good and feels really good to use the power of God to save the whole party and also you know... Greater Restoration. At the end of the day, even with all the good damaging spells Cleric has, I'm the main healer of my party. They depend on me to NOT DIE so the super healing is really nice.

I agree. I love all of these spells plus the ones you mentioned. Regarding your reference to you, as the healer, not dying, that is why I cast Death Ward on myself as the healer.

My War Cleric loves Holy Weapon and Spirit Shroud. gotta have the dispel magic and prayer of healing is a great spell for party healing.

We need tier 3 spell lists !!!! I'm running a campaign of 7-8 dual class characters all at level 13/12. Druid /Wizard, Ranger Sorcerer, Barbarian/Warlock , 2 Fighter/Paladins,a Cleric/Fighter and a Ranger Fighter. Also I created the character class of Dwarven Battle Rager that is dual class with monk way of the open hand. I'd like an opinion on my battle rager class since I'd like to publish it and value the opinion of Nerdachy !

Which cleric spells to choose? hmmm...how about...ALL OF THEM! Yes, while the rest of the weak and puny casters are limited to half their spells list or spending copious amounts of gold and time to learn spells, the mighty clerics, and semi-puny druids, have all their spells! ALL THE TIME!

When I have access to Walk on Water, Water Breathing, and/or Control Water, I get very clustered when choosing spells. So tough with those ones around with so many other useful spells. Then, if I do pick Water Breathing, I have the struggle of preparing it or planning to use it as a ritual.

Suprised we didn't hear Banishment. Just eliminating a boss to then get all of the characters into melee and hold their actions to attack when it comes back seems good. Not to mention if it isn't native to a plane, you can Banish it indefinitely. You know whats even better? When you get sent to a random plane of existence and then you Banish yourself to go back home!

No. But, you could put them on Natural Weapons. So, as a Druid that's wildshaped, a Tabaxi/Tortle/Lizardfolk Monk, etc, you could.

Does spirit guardians really stop someone from moving? I assumed that cutting their movement speed in half would mean that they move at half speed: ie, if they want to move 5 feet, it would "cost" them 10 feet worth of movement to do it. So if a 30 foot movement creature had moved 20 feet, gets to the area of effect, they would then be able to trudge on 5 more feet, not get stopped dead in their tracks. Am I reading that wrong, or did this video rule it how they wanted it to work, not how it should work?

The phrasing is very specific, the area does not become difficult terrain which costs more movement to move through, it reduces the speed of all affected creatures while in the area. So yes, if a creature suddenly has its speed reduced and has exceeded the new speed they stop cold. Of special note, the speed reduction happens regardless of whether the creature makes or fails its save vs the damage each turn.

@@ElenaAideen Huh, I hadn't looked into any other examples to compare, so that's interesting to know. Does that also mean that if a creature was already inside the area, and they wanted to leave it, they'd have their full movement available to them? Since once they left the area they'd "gain back" the movement they had lost?

In my opinion Revivify is much more efficient than Raise Dead. And also Holy Weapon is amazing on a Hexblade Sword Bard.

Revivify is fine *IF* you can cast it w/ 1 minute, but Raise Dead wasn't on the list because it's efficient, it earned the Iconic Spell award.

ElenaAideen 1 minute is an eternity in combat time. And I understand the iconic status, but then the title of a go-to spell is a bit misleading. In most cases you wouldn’t prepare Raise Dead since you can just swap it in after a long rest when you need it.
