Datto! Looks great. I can’t find it anywhere online. Do you know where I can get hold of it?

Best bet is Surugaya. I think Zen Market is a way to buy from them abroad: www.suruga-ya.jp/product/detail/607555368?tenpo_cd=400475

Am i understanding correctly? Calling datto gets a bonus move in addition to winning the trick normally? That could result in a huge jump? What's the punishment for calling datto incorrectly

Nice Rec's, those are all great games! From the thumbnail I though Pompier's might be on the list somewhere too You seem very familiar with Japanese. :) Do you live in Japan?

Hello! Thanks for watching :) Yes we live in Japan in the Tokyo area! Pompiers is a great game too, I just never start with it with new players. If people want, we can definitely do a video of great Trick-Takers from East Asia.

@@TheBoardGameDojo It borrows heavily from Tichu, but I feel that it improves on it remarkably. Betting isn't so swingy, the bidding and rotating partnerships are brilliant, and I enjoy the treasure cards. I would also highly recommend Haggis (getting reprinted soon).

The Crew is far too much group dependent to be good. Experiences online and in real life have borne this out. I think it leads to far too much alpha player attitude of experienced players dissing noob mistakes which is ironic because cooperative games usually foster a group learning experience with mistakes being tolerated....maybe it was the groups i played with.

Hmm there's a lot to unpack there. I think group dependent games can, in fact, be good. Twilight Imperium and Cosmic Encounter are popular and enjoyed even those those can absolutely be either really fun or really terrible depending on the group. But to your other point, I think it might be a group problem. Not so much the people, but rather, the motivations of the players not lining up. I've found the Crew to be really fun when player motivations line up. Are we a group of really competitive players? That works. Are we a group of people just sharing drinks and having fun? Then it works. Are we a mixed group of people who really really want to win and other just want to chill because they are new to trick taking? Doesn't work. I can absolutely see how someone who is unforgiving of mistakes would ruin the game for others. It's an interesting point you've brought up and I think is one of many pitfalls that can happen in cooperative games. I've had to curate groups over the years that align with my preferred cooperative game styles, and there are absolutely players I won't play with. It happens. But then again, you can also dislike popular games. There are no wrong opinions in the space and I appreciate you sharing your experience with us. It's good to know in case others might be running into the same problem or wondering if it could happen to them.

I think all coop games have the potential to suffer from alpha gaming. You said that usually gamers will tolerate bad mistakes in coop games. Well I think it swings both ways and the crew is the same. The Crew is one of the best trick takers in my opinion. It can definitely be unforgiving if someone plays the wrong card, but people can still be nice about it. Sounds like it’s the groups you were playing were not very tolerant.
