For the last "hardest lick" you can just use an alternate fingering to make it fully compatible with downward pickslanting. The intro isn't really in a strict time signature, but I feel the part shown in 13:05 in 4/4 as 16th notes with the following 4 note chunks: 1. B[19] e[17 15] B[19] (D D U D) 2. e[15 19 17 15] (D U D U) 3. B[19] e[17 15] B[19] (D D U D) 4. B[15] G[17] B[17 15] (U D D U) I reuse the same fingering for chunk 3 as chunk 1, whereas you play chunk 3 entirely on the high E string. You'll notice that my fingering means the "hard note" (17th fret on G string) occurs after an upstroke, which is a very easy string change with downward pickslanting. The entire passage is compatible with downward pickslanting with the correct fingering (except for the final low G unless you use legato to set up an upstroke string change but it's pretty easy to catch with a quick inside string change since the next note doesn't happen for a while). The main takeaway for me from Troy's videos is that fast licks have to be _engineered_. You often have to experiment with different fingerings and techniques to find a good way to play them.

YO how does this have only 2k views? Very informative mate, love it! Been getting back into guitar after a couple years off in October and aside from playing in a funk cover band I'm not really doing much in terms of getting my chops back. Decided to give Cliffs a go as I used to play lots of satch riffs and stuff but shredding has never really been my thing and this song is next level. I CAN DO THIS! :D

Yeah you have to do whatever you can to go with the down sweep/upstroke string switching. You often have options though, such as in the 14-17-12 high e thing you can choose to do the 14-17 hammer that you suggested, or you can pull off 17-12. In some circumstance you can also alter if you start the phrase with up or down. Also I think he does play an open D right before hitting the rest of the G chord and going back to the repeating bridge chord bit thats between all the sections.

Great video Chris. I still think the hardest lick is in the solo. Where you descend all the way down from 17th fret high E area to the open low E. That thing is insane. Also I’m not sure if your excessive use of memes is a great teaching tool or just general silliness. Either way- good stuff man.

That one was a contender for sure! For whatever reason though I find it much more reliable than these 5 when I'm playing the song.

I do the fives with two upstrokes on last two notes and then a downstroke to start the next fives on the B string.

If you change the 14th fret on the 1st string for the 17th fret on the 2nd string the last lick becomes way easier because then you don't need to change anything about the way you pick. Good video though!

@TheBaldGuitarist 3 жыл бұрын
That's a great point! You could turn it into a position 2 pentatonic run that way and apply the normal "5s" approach he uses so often.

I find playing the F# on the B string harder. Descending on the E string to the f# works better for me because you don’t need to change string

Good tutorial. Great tips. Only issue I see with it is the pulls off on 5-7-6-5 section. I don't believe those tabs are accurate. My tab book indicates those notes are all picked, and from when I hear the song they are all picked. Rapid fire picking!

It is really interesting how you play and tabbed the hardest number 1 lick in the song. I notice that you are using more notes on the high E string descending Instead of playing the f# on the b string at the 19th fret , you descended to the f# on the E string at the 14th fret. I have never seen it played like that before but is easier for me to play that way. Until you get to the hardest two notes in the song that you are talking about.

💯 I tried it the way you're talking about way back when, but I like the descending on the E string better overall. Even if the 2 note cross string mechanics did make me lose all my hair lol

@@TheBaldGuitarist thank you for the really helpful tutorial, it’s helped me learn the song beyond my previous ability. . The string crossing part that is so difficult is nothing that a one off hammer on or pull off can’t fix , and no one will ever know, 😂🤣
