Yeah, I will keep my 2003 Chevy tracker also. And skip the EV craze when I need to replace. No outside plug I can use at my apartment building, and yet to see any public chargers here. And EVs like the Bolt need to be plugged in before they will start if the temp gets too cold, like it does here in the winter.

@@davidclough3951 I’m in Michigan. People I work with complain about needing a winter car because their EV often won’t start on really cold days; especially when it’s windy too. Worse than a diesel if ya ask me.

Something that wasn't mentioned was the long waits to repair electric cars. Very few shops work on them and it can take weeks-months to get something fixed properly on an EV

The shops do not have diagnostic tools and that is a new headache in the Right to Repair law that I think congress has passed. Tesla and others have so far reserved the right to be the only repair choice-- on purpose to grab cash.

Most dealerships can only do minor repairs to BEV's since they sell few if any each year just like the rest of the dealerships in their region.

I expect the charging fees to increase in the future. It's only"cheap" now as incentive to buy electric. When everyone is on electric, they'll start to come out with headlines of what a massive toll millions of charging cars puts on the grid and in order to be able to supply to everyone it'll cost more. They'll up the prices insanely high.

Hello! I had a similar thought not too long ago, but I found some interesting info by Tony Ceba. Electricity is actually super easy to make- think solar, wind, and dams (of which solar is the cheapest)-the problem is storing it. It turns out that the cost to produce solar and battery storage is now the cheapest it’s ever been with costs declining even more so. There may be some blips, but I think that electricity will actually remain low cost OR cost even less in the near future.

@@Varosphotographs wrong, power is NOT cheap to produce. Ive been 100% solar since 2012 and can tell you it could not replace 10% of power requirements. (EDIT- power can be cheap if its hydro, thats the only exception and doesnt require storage batteries.

If you are in a warm area that does not go below freezing the battery will give you a full charge. If you are north in cold country you can lose nearly 40% of you battery's charge at 0 deg/F.

Those taxes and fees discussed will only increase. Governments will milk them forever. Any thing that is variable will vary but only in one direction when it’s a fee.

I believe EVs will only be more reliable than ICE cars when they don’t get into any major accident/s. It would really be a huge problem fixing those sensors and cameras that are attached to the body of the car.

@@aeronYTco We'll find out in another 100 years when EVs have finally been around as long as some of the cars still on the road. We already know the expected life of the battery is current only 10 years or 1 million miles, while an ICE engine block can last upwards of 100 years and tens of millions of miles.

gas tax doesnt pay for roads, hasnt for at least 30 years. legislators stole the gas tax and any roads they repair come out of general taxes.

For many years, Virginia has based annual vehicle registration cost on the vehicle’s fuel efficiency. You have to pay MORE for hybrids and EVs to compensate for the loss of gas tax revenues.

Just a small correction. Idling fees aren’t for keeping people from charging too long, they are for keeping people from using the charging space as a parking space.

1. No registration fee here 2. Haven't noticed tire wear increase 3. I charge for 8 cents /kw at home 4. Insurance went up $25 per year based on value of car. I drive 120 kms per day. EV is the only way to go.

My buddy had his right rear quarter panel dented in a parking lot. I was completely shocked that the repair estimate was $26,000! No wonder nobody wants to insure Teslas.

Tesla service centers will usually recommend third party body shops for body repairs. Get more than one estimate.

Saving money on gas means nothing when you have to make payments on a $100,000 vehicle. Even so called economy cars start at $35,000.

200,000 miles with little to no maintenance? What about the 25,000 mile Tire replacement? I don't mind if people want EV it's their money, it's not for me though, did my research months ago, my cousin has had Tesla for long time, it does good around the area but if your taking a trip it's much more costly, hope everyone does research and talk to someone in person that owns one, the upfront price alone for one EV would buy 2 if not 3 gas cars, i choose gas for now.

@@ronaldhowell4146 Americans need a change in the way they think. You shouldn't purchase a vehicle so you can have the option to go on one long roadtrip every few years. If it's seriously that important, just get a rental. This country needs trains for the long hauls. Cars are a bad transportation solution as it is. Battery packs that weigh as much as a truck just so you have the option to drive across the country is stupidity at best.

@@Dudanation12 I wasn't implying one long trip, many people take one if not two vacations a year, I put around 100-200 miles every other day with my car, it only takes a few minutes to be back on the road when I need gas, I don't see any advantage in having a EV to have to charge, too many people fall victim to one sided stories only to be let down, Why would I use vacation money on rental car? I want a vehicle that I can use short or long trip without all the waiting for charging,

Thank you for making this video. Often we hear 'ev has no maintenace' and that is just not true. There is nothing magical about the suspension components on Tesla vs ICE. Ball joints, control arms and shocks wear down no matter which you pick.

You are taking the "no maintenance" statement too literally. All it means is that there is no maintenance as is required by an internal combustion engine, ie. oil changes, fuel and oil filters, transmission fluid, spark plugs, and other ignition and fuel system maintenance. Of course, they have many systems in common: HVAC, suspension, brakes, wipers, lights, etc. But I should tell you that my original brake pads are still at 75% at 111,000 miles on my 2013 Tesla due to the regenerative braking.

@@UTArch1 I have a plug in hybrid Fusion I use for back and forth to work, after 30k miles with the regen braking, the machining marks are still there on my rotors. :) I guess I bought the powerstops because they look cool and I might need them one day. lol

When I first got my 2019 Model 3 at the beginning of June 2019, I recall Superchargers were $0.15 per kw and now those same stations are at $0.43 per kw. Definitely creeping up. Being a younger EV owner, I was also never warned about the high insurance premiums. I just turned 25, so I’m hoping to see this change, but for the last 3 years I’ve been lucky to find a company that will provide $280 per month. When looking for quotes I’d get rates of $350, $450 and one was even $500 per month! Overall, I’ve enjoyed owning an EV, but I would say all the money saved on gas gets spent elsewhere such as insurance and tires.

My State Farm has ins at 75/ month for 2022 model3, free charging at work, Volta has free charging for 1st 2 hours at about 20 miles per hour, look for Volta chargers in your area

Thanks for making this video! There were somethings I knew, but other hidden fees make not getting an EV more sense for me. My Prius cost only 24k and maintenance is zero with 100k miles now. Every fill up gets me 450miles, tires are like $240 for all 4, oil change is $60 every 10k miles, gas is 87 octane, and it can carry a lot since it's a hatchback and the rear seats drop down. I think we needed to go plug in hybrid instead of all electric for the future.

Yeah, the right to repair issue is just another reason why I’m excited about the Aptera. They are working on making things so that you can work on them yourself. And you almost never will have to charge it. Though depending on your driving.

It takes about 38hrs to charge it in direct sunlight. So unless you drive very very little-yes you'll need to charge it. And this is 38hours of direct sunlight not 38 hours on a clock where 1/2 of it is nighttime.

A lot of good information, I don't really like EVs because of the right to repair and we've been informed of outages this year by our electric company due to closing of fossil fuel plants. Its Michigan and they plan on closing more every year for the next few years. The infrastructure here is questionable as we were already dealing with power issues the last few years. If you have the money and want to buy an EV that's fine with me, I just question a government that's trying to push EVs without having the proper infrastructure in place.

I got all the hard and fast in the first several trips after I first bought my Mach E. Now I only use all that power when I have to. I'm at 35k miles and still on the first set of tires. It looks like I'll probably be changing them at 40k or so.

@@brokenwrench404 495 at 9.3 gal tank thats when i fill it up right at the 495 mark it can go 565 miles and the tank capacity is 11.3 gal. Most people that buy a Tesla or any other EV is overpaying something that they drive from A to B and most of these people are not Rich but they still buy it .

Regarding insurance, my 2017 Bolt insurance is roughly the same as on my other 2 cars (the other 2 are Ford Fusion Hybrid and Chrysler minivan), all have the same full coverage with State Farm. I pay $1750 per year for all 3 (under $600/yr or $50/mo for each). I am now living in Tucson Arizona, but there was little change in cost from when I lived in NY. I think the cost to insure Teslas must be higher due to the high cost of collision repairs - unless you don't have collision and comprehensive coverage... Also in Tucson, I was able to register my Bolt for 5 years, the other two were only allowed for 1 or 2 years, and the annual registration was MUCH less than for each of my two hybrid/ICE vehicles (which also need emission inspection for renewal). My only maintenance in 4.5 years for the Bolt has been wiper blades, but the original tires are about worn out after 42K miles.

I think the higher insurance rates are unique only to Tesla due to the materials and repair process required for the body panels. Previously I had a Mazda 3 paying $63/mo and jumping over to the Bolt was the same at $61 per month.

Depends on your past, tickets, marriage status, etc.. My 2023 M3P cost 40$ more a month than my 2012 Honda Civic, and that's only because I upped the coverage from 50k to 100k, and lowered by deductible to 100 from 500. Worth 40 extra dollars imo.

Had my Nissan Leaf for 14 months. I did a one year cost analysis based on gas cars I owned before it. After factoring in $200.00 at charging stations and money paid to my electric company for charging at home before my solar panels went active, I saved $2700.00 by not driving a gas vehicle. Since the analysis I have purchased two Michelin tires which I purchased for $549.00, including installation. There is no way I will ever own a gas car again.

I drove 32,000 miles on my 2020 Tesla Model Y before I had to change tires… it is very important to rotate your tires regularly like any other car. I spent $400 per tire installed for some higher quality Michelin tires.

Lithium for batteries was around 6,000 dollars in 2020 now 78,000 dollars . High devaluation of the car battery packs are incredibly expensive and getting more so as lithium gets more expensive . Higher cost to buy and power prices are rising fast .

Great comments about the "fear of battery replacement" after 10yrs. As an example, Toyota just announced a battery warranty of 10yrs/600K miles with a max of 70% degradation.

@@johnbogert7306 All batteries degrade in time. You may be able to get another 90K miles. I'll stick to my Jeep, almost 275K miles, same engine and transmission, still runs great and can go anywhere!

I think the car insurance cost really does depend on the company. I had a 2017 Hyundai Elantra base model and I cost me $95 for full coverage and when I switched to my 2020 Chevy Bolt Lt my rate only went up $2 a month for the same plan/coverage. Even though the Bolt was almost twice the value of the Elantra. As for home charging; I would recommend calling your utilities company because some offer incentives for home chargers. My electric company gave me a free level 2 charger and covered half of the installation cost. It also might be worth looking into solar panels if you live in an area with high electricity rates.

Exactly. When I added my Model S to my fleet of 3 other cars, my insurance rate for my Model S was exactly the same, or slightly less than my Acura TSX and my Infiniti FX35, around $1200 a year. So, insurance rates are a lot more complex, and depend on the driver, your age, credit score, home location, state, driving history and probably your height and shoe size.

I’ve never owned an EV. I’ve driven the Tesla model S several times. However, while getting my gas powered car fixed, the dealership gave me an EV as a loaner. My conclusion is that my next car will absolutely not be an EV, nor the car after that, nor the car after that. After searching for a charging station, it took 90 minutes for my car to charge to full. Factoring in the lost time in charging, Plus, the two people patiently waiting behind me, as someone that drives a lot and depends upon his car for many things I can clearly conclude this technology is nowhere near practical at this point.

Excellent video. EV fuel tax here in MO is about $80 - which reminds me I haven't paid it yet for this year. I have over 40K on original tires (2018 Model 3LR) and should be good for 10K more. Of course I'm an old geezer and put it in chill mode on day 1.

Same, my 2020 LR Model Y with base wheels still look fine (over 20k miles). I think it's when you get the thinner wheels that you ride quality and tire life declines massively

@@PerfectorZY It is all about how you drive the car. If you look up tire wear on any performance car with a gas engine, tire wear is basically identical. I just replaced the tires on a performance car with barely 12k miles on them which were getting worn out. People are comparing Corollas and Camry's to a Model 3, which is obviously a pretty absurd comparison with cars that have probably half the HP and torque of a Model 3.

Very good info. Thanks. I'm surprised the designers/manufacturers don't provide an alternative algorithmic solution in motor control subroutines to reduce the tire wear problem. E.G. if you want to slow or reduce tire wear, select the "tire saving tire motors control profile". If you want the "standard" torque response then select the "standard tire motors control profile". I would think that (on demand) it should be fairly easy to emulate a standard gas vehicle's torque profile(s) to give the car the feel, performance and tire wear of a gas vehicle...if that's what the driver wants.

You already have that option on all Tesla's. You can choose the driving modes, and if you want the car to drive like a Corolla, put it in Chill mode and the car will drive like 4 cylinder Corolla.

I have a 2021 YLR with 19 in wheels I keep it on Chill mode 98% of the time. I drive it about 33K a year just replaced the tires with 39786 miles on them I could have gone 5K more before I got to the tread bars. with the Alignment $1538. Yes tires are more but just like ICE it how you drive.

I plan to (over)build a solar power plant on the roof of my house before I go EV. This will hugely mitigate the fueling expenses. I have also debated on a conversion system/kit for the car in order to avoid taxes. Vintage vehicles have a one-time registration fee as well. Food for thought...

my only issue was that my 2017 Bolt needed a new 12 volt battery. I knew 12volt battery would need to b changed , regular ICE cars need to ,to, but you would think the dealership would keep them in stock. I had to wait 3 days for them to get a replacement

I work at a Tesla Service Center and we keep dozens of each type of 12v battery in stock. We do a lot of 12v replacements via mobile techs too. I would think most places would keep these in stock.

I'm a big fan of the plug-in hybrid. The average commute is about 40 miles a day and most plug-ins can handle that on one charge. For longer trips, you have the benefit of the gasoline engine. Unfortunately, plug-in hybrids are hard to find.

Issue with PHEV where you do most f the driving in EV mode, is the gas engine is not running. Gas will actually go bad. So, do you only keep half a tank max, so refreshing the gas before it goes stale? A small hassle there. Gas stabilizers don’t work very well. Next, you still have break in period for gas engine. That could take forever. Still doing oil, radiator fluid changes.

@@edsmale if you do not have a house and you own a EV you have no choice but to Goto a charger and wait what 20 to 30 minutes a charge. You are doing this what twice a week if you run your air or heater and commute 230 miles a week. You go get an oil change its 20 min and it last 4 to 6 months till your next oil change or fill your gas 5 min. You are charging twice a week that's that's a lot of down time would you not say.

@@edsmale first of all gas engine starts anyway whenever you need to heat cabin or accelerate hard, so gas going bad is not an issue lol. Plug-ins are not full EVs lol, you will still use gas everyday. The only difference is full tank will last 3 months instead of 2 weeks. Gas is fine for 3 months, it won't go stale that fast lol. It takes more than a year to even notice some change in gas condition. If car was sitting for couple years - then yes, but not in 3 months lol. As for break in period lol - almost all modern engines don't require any break-in period, and those that still do - it's usually 600 miles. Considering you'll use full tank in 3 months - that's about break in period right there. no problem. Oil changes are a non issue lol, change once a year yourself for $15 Walmart jug or pay $50 once a year. Not a big deal. In short - you are not a car guy and don't know much when it comes to cars, but I tired to educate you.

@@azerogliev6520 Toyota PHEV like the rav4 prime will stay in EV mode. But if it's too cold for the heat pump, then the engine might kick on. It also kicks on if you pick the defrost button. But it does defrost a bit with the heat pump. The latest Prius prime is the same thing.

I have a 2022 LR Model Y with the base tires and wheels (so the tires are much thicker) I have over 20k miles on it so far (I drive a lot) and my tires look like I'd expect for a normal car. I feel like it you get bigger wheels/thinner tires that's really when you notice it. At least this is my experience. I also am on auto pilot and stuck in traffic at least 40% of the time where I can accelerate like a mad man so that's probably helping too.

We have a 2018 model S 75D. The original tires lasted 27600 miles. But the EV tax for out Tesla in King County, WA was about $850 in 2018 and is about $750 this year. At least we have free supercharging, saving a lot on road trips. Good luck on you model X.

Each state can levy its own %, it’s a tax after all. If you cut gas tax revenue with EV, we’ll guess what you’ll pay a high EV fee to make it up. It’s a shell game and you lose. I’ll keep my guzzler

Hi! I was also surprised at how high the plate fees are for EVs. I live in Ohio and it costs $45 for all plates plus $200 for EVs, so I was out over $500 for the two year tag I purchased 😬 Ps I still love my model Y lol

In New Zealand they have not done it yet but rather than attach road maintenance to registration they will be doing it by buying permits that cover the distance you intend to travel over a specific time.

Great video, I'd like to see a comparison of the best (mpg) Hybrids vs EV's by category and whether it avoids the gas tax. Having a Lexus RX450h, I'm researching the switch. I installed solar 6 years ago in anticipation of an EV, so a Tesla Wall would fit my usage.

You will not get this information on YT because of the EV agenda. Hybrids and PHEV's are cheaper to own, operate and maintain than any Tesla EV, even with $7+ gas.

Greets from the Czech Republic. As always great content. electricity same as gas is much more expensive here. 1kWh is 0.56€ at Superchargers and can go up to 1€ at others. Home charging is much cheaper at 0.16-0.30€. Also here EVs are exempted from road tax. But Teslas esp are much more expensive. Model 3 LR is here at 60.000€ and that with average annual net inclmes of app 20.000€. But I would say once one owned a Tesla you never go back to ICE , like ever... and its efficiency is insane. I show in my last video: 50km at constant 140kmh was at 201Wh/km and 50km constant at 120kmh was at 144Wh/km.

I noticed in all the EV videos no one ever takes into account the cost of delivery of electricity, where I am in Ct. That is more expensive that the kwh of electricity. So with that you can almost double the cost of home charging. I own a Camery hybrid that gets me at present 45mpg , your car is $30000 more than mine without all the other cost. With the price of gas where I am $3.40 per gallon I can purchase 8823 gals. Of gas and go 397,058 mile before I get to the cost of your tesla, oh and not have to wait hours of your life to charge my car.

Really nice video. Lots of good info. We have cheaper charging at low use times that is around $.07 a Kwh. That is the way to go and best to use 110 outlet for around town driving.

I live in Florida and have paid about 14 cents per kWh for the last 10 years ( with little to no fluctuation ). My model 3 standard range is 225 Wh/mi ( though I have been beating that ), so it costs me less than 3.5 cents per mile. My Prius got about 50 mpg so at $3.50 per gallon, that was about 7 cents per mile, or twice as much. And I don't have to pay $100 every 6 months to change the oil now, and more every year or two to clean the fuel injectors and throttle body. I can't see the price of electricity doubling any time soon without a similar doubling of gas prices. And if electric prices do go up, then that just makes solar all the more attractive. It was about break even the last time I did the calculation.

I have Hyundai Ioniq EV past 4 years and SoH 99.8% and it runs without any oil changes, gear oil, no gear = no gear repairs, spark plugs, long and short service, no drive train issues!

Washington raised the yearly EV fee from $150 to $150 plus another $75 fee to total $225 just for grins. In California you can lower your DCFC prices by charging off peak at least with Tesla but I have free Supercharging for life, so I'm not up to date. However right after Christmas they were kicking me off at 80% which is generally fine because of crowds, but my car has a much shorter range than new cars and sometimes I need a little more. California was the only place that the SC stopped, but I only charge enough to get to my next stop, so I rarely charge to 80% let alone higher. I bought a EVSE for my Fiat and I am still using it on the Tesla with an adapter, but I bought it from Amazon for $300 at the time and later it dropped to $200. It is a 240v, but only 20 amp, so it doesn't stress the house at all. However it only charges the Tesla at 11 miles per hour. This is fine for me since I rarely drive more than 50-60 miles per day and it easily charges up while I sleep. I think a lot of people go overkill on home charging. Unless you are a massive road warrior, you really don't need to charge your car in two hours at home. Between sleeping, showering and eating chances are you will be there at least 10 hours. Otherwise why pay the mortgage? I initially did pay a lot for insurance, but I questioned them and shopped around and my Model S is no more than most cars as far as premiums go. Same with tires, I think I paid a lot for tires, but after 34,000 miles they still look good and I am going on another 5,000 mile trip so I expect them to last 60,000 like the first set. My car is at 94,000 miles and I have only bought one set of replacement tires. They get rotated pretty often since that makes them last longer. I replaced one door handle and one window regulator under warranty and got the screen memory upgrade, but still the original screen. Going to the newer version would add a lot of features and cost $2500 or so. My car has 4G, but I figure at some point they will add 5G or Starlink and then I will upgrade

@@blnunya6689 I'm sure you know that a pound of Cobalt is consumed per 80,000 gallons of gasoline in the refining process to get the sulfur out. I'm also sure you are aware of LFP batteries that don't even use any Cobalt at all, and that 50% of 2022 Tesla's have these batteries. But I bet you didn't know that global temperature increases and droughts are affecting more black children than those that work in the mines supplying your gasoline addiction. Putin also thanks you for your help with his war efforts since Russia earns $100 million per day from oil and gas.

I have two concerns. 1, charging. I don't have a garage to install a home charging station in. 2, The "App". I don't have a data plan for my phone, so checking charge levels, and other features, and diagnostics in the middle of nowhere, wouldn't be accessible to me. This seems like an issue.

I have found the the tires on my wife's 2016 model X do seem to wear out a little faster and are more expensive to replace, but it probably amounts to $100 a year, which is canceled out by the fact that you don't have to change the oil and clean the throttle body periodically.

We just replaced tires on our 2019 model 3 Long Range Sport wheels at 33K miles. Total cost for new tires with warranty was $1250 at Discount tires. I thought this was reasonable, however tires on my ICE cars do last longer, maybe 40K miles. Driving both types, the EV is still the best bet for transportation in most cases, and expenses are considerably less as is total cost of ownership by far.

Someone I know got his model 3 rear ended and the damage just looked like a scrape on the rear bumper. It cost like 11k for repairs because the the plug was misaligned a little and for some reason the front sensors or something like that were affected also for some reason.

The tire replacement cost is certainly a big one. I wonder if any ev owners out there noticed if their second set of tires lasted longer than the first as the number of times they felt "obliged" to show their friends what the acceleration felt like dropped. 😜

Yes, that may be an issue. I walked past a parked Tesla Sport of some kind and noticed what looked like tar spots on the rear. Out of curiosity I wiped them with my fingertip and they were specks of black rubber

Also did not discuss ADDITIONAL wear and tear on the INFRASTRUCTURE (roads) caused by the 150% heavier EVs. You can't win for losing. When you slam across pot holes, thank the Green New Deal, & the money laundering in Ukraine, etc etc. Also, didn't I hear that hitting a pothole sometimes causes EV to explode?

Very happy three+ year 2019 leaf owner here. I did have to upgrade my electrical panel and run a circuit for my home charger, but I was getting solar installed as well which also required the electrical upgrade, so just rolled those costs into the solar installation.

Wow, had to get a solar system to afford to charge your electric vehicle. Fast charging is now $48. $1200 for tires at 20,000 miles. Wait until the battery goes bad at over 10k a pop. Can you go on long trips? Absolutely nuts to buy an electric car.

@@phoenixrisin2269 Please stop repeating tired old lies from the oil company playbook. Charging an EV at most places, especially home, is like buying gas for about a dollar a gallon. If you use chargers like Volta, it's free. Current (Tesla) battery packs last more than 300,000 miles. By that time, 20+ years from now, a replacement battery pack will probably be $2k. And the pack doesn't suddenly stop working then. It just has a few percent less capacity. Fast charger networks like Tesla's and soon others allow easy cross-continent road tips in the U.S and Europe, and people do them all the time. Tire wear on an EV is like any other car of similar size and performance. Buying a gas car is nuts with gas at $5 to $8 a gallon. Even with gas at $3 a gallon, EVs costs much less to own over the long term, like thousands of dollars less. Now that is accelerated with gas costs double that. You do not need to get solar to charge your car at home, but if you do, you power your car and home for free after about 7 years when the system pays for itself.

However I'm enjoying the EV immensely, and in some small way contributing to lowering my carbon footprint.

I"m aware of the cost on the environment in the mining of the materials needed in producing the batteries. Staying with fossil fuels is not a solution either, however because of the high demand for electric vehicles now it has inspired new innovation in sourcing less caustic materials for making batteries, and making them more efficient. So without the demand for EV's, innovation for better ways to power them becomes stagnant.The science is moving forward.

We've had our 2018 Tesla Model 3 for 4 1/2 years now and 48,000 miles. Our experience has been much like yours, except we got 33,000 out of our first set of tires, our insurance is just under $100/mo and we've noticed some high-use superchargers here on the west coast and traveling through Utah are as high as $0.48 per kWh. But our home charging is still 90% of our costs and is still $0.09 per kWh. Wouldn't go back to gas ever.

While I'll be doing rigor mortis before buying from the fleet of Musk, I will say that one great appeal of a battery EV is being able to plug the thing into a standard 15A outlet and just leaving it there for the 16 hours out of the day that's not peak and that the car is also parked. (Just unplug for the 4 hours that cost me $0.25/kWh and plug back in for the periods that cost $0.04 or $0.08/kWh). In the midwest, this is probably more the rule because EV charging points are pretty much an afterthought here. I can charge slow by default and make it go faster when I need it to.

@@junker15 Or, you can just schedule your charging. No need to unplug anything. Or use a timer. Or use the dryer plug if you have a dryer in your garage. There is even a cable that you can plug into 2 different 120V power outlets in your house, and if the outlets are on the opposite phase of your 240V bus bar, you will charge at 240V at 12A.

The fun is about to start with rising energy costs, especially at the road side chargers. There has even been talk of power outages, which would leave EV owners having to charge their car with a diesel powered generator.

These claims are always so comically dumb. Electric cars don't need to be charged every day or be plugged in to work, as.. you know... they have a huge BATTERY on board. Hence, unless the power is out for weeks, it isn't exactly a big issue, and if the power is out for weeks, nothing at your house or your local gas station works either...

As more EVs are on the road expect that the tax will be moved to Kilowatts at a public charger. Since people may also have a home charger some of the extra registration charge likely to remain.

Isnt california paying $700+ for registration? I saw that from Ryan Shaw when he made a video and talked about his reg... My reg here in Texas is $75 total including government fees. I just took delivery on Saturday for my MYP, and THANKFULLY the mobile connector was included.. And since my brother who is an electrician, he taught me how to install my Tesla wall connector. So now i have 3 mobile connectors and 2 wall connectors and i avoid having to pay someone to install including the NEMA 1450 outlet. But i did purchase a 40ft NEMA 1450 extension to reach the second Tesla in the drive way. Since I also have insurance on my tires w/ discount tire, i avoid paying for new tires every time. The only thing I noticed on all my 3 Tesla's is the fact that the black tips in the charge port get damaged or stuck in the wall connector wand or mobile connector wand, and it causes issues when trying to charge.. luckily Tesla will fix on warranty but, if your not on warranty, you are screwed to pay out of pocket.

@@rcfreak9 depends on the type of tires a consumer gets for their Tesla. Tesla already come with michellin tires on AWD and Performance and continental on Standard Range + and then, There is also the type of tires for the michellin pilot sport all season = $289 And Michellin pilot sport 4S = $350 And Continental = $189 So it all depends on what version you get as well as the prices in your state given the inflation. Texas discount tire might have slightly cheaper prices than that of Georgia or NY. Etc. You should contact discount and compare prices.

I have done several road trips with my Tesla Y, I don't think you are well-informed about just how easy it is to road trip with an EV. Just got home from a 5 day, 2700 trip that cost me less than $300 in charging costs. It would've been over $600 in my ICE car.

Get a Tesla with lifetime supercharging. I am planning a road trip from Austin, TX to Southern California in October. My fuel cost will be zero and I will only have to stop to charge for about 30 minutes every 3 hours or so. The Tesla trip planner has already mapped the route with all necessary charging stops along the way. No problem.

Thanks Kim! Regarding tire wear: The Model S and X especially the Performance versions wear out tires quickly due to weight and high motor torque. But any heavy vehicle will wear out tires faster than a lighter one. Tesla Model 3 is only about 10% heavier than a similar BMW 3 Series and has much better tire wear than S or X. Regarding "charging cables" they're really neither chargers nor cables. For AC charging, the charger is in the car. And the "charging cable" is more than a cable. Technically it's called an Electric Vehicle Service Equipment or EVSE, which has a contactor (power relay to actually connect the power), ground fault interrupter, and microprocessor to make sure everything is working correctly and safely. P.S. Tesla sells EVSEs and related charging equipment near its cost. They don't make much, if any profit on them. That's why the Mobile Connector (EVSE) is only $200 for example. Insurance on Teslas is low, due to their advanced active and passive safety features. Regarding Tesla service, Tesla recently made its repair manuals free. There are many cases where things can be fixed yourself using the new free manuals. The manuals can be purchased for $0 on your Tesla account web site.

We ran into an impressive amount of expense when replacing tires but ultimately our costs have been very manageable. I think it's important to note that car washes cost more owing to the specialized paint and we never go through a conventional car wash (Tesla isn't alone when it comes to discouraging you from going through car washes because of scratching). We've used 110 V outlets, destination chargers (fee and free), superchargers and we also have the NEMA 10-30 plug which we use to charge at home vs. using a dedicated Tesla charger. The model 3 has performed brilliantly and we have zero regrets with our purchase and because of EV incentives and when we purchased we got the best deal possible. The only thing I regret comes from how much battery we have and that was simply a function of how much we could afford. I wish we could extend the battery distance employing aftermarket upgrades and I'm hoping for a long term option but for now, it is what it is :) Thanks for the video Kim!

The car wash thing is more of a “new expensive car” thing, not EV specific but I guess it is an unexpected cost for people buying more up-market than usual because they want an EV. The biggest problem with machine car washes is they have a chance to scratch the paint if dirt gets caught up on the brushes and they often use strong chemicals that can mess up other paint treatments.
