I was stationed in San Diego while in the Navy. I was stationed there twice, early 80;s and the late 80's. I spent a great deal of time doing volunteer work at the Armed Forces YMCA at 500 West Broadway. I know that the Y was sold and converted into apartments in the late 80's. The history of the Y is amazing. I would love to see a video on the history of the Y,, all on the time it was located at that location. There was a volunteer club for military guys, called the Tri club (for those in the Navy, Marines and Army) that volunteered to help put on events for the troops on leave and off duty. We did talent shows, free meal on Sundays and even dances. There was a gym and more inside the building.

@@markmagstadt There are more things that I remember about the building since I was able to go through parts of it that were not accessed by just anyone.I spent a great deal of time in the building and got to know several of the employees that worked there. There was a older part of the Y that was situated facing west along the street that runs on the west side of the building and had no direct access from the building.

oooooo so thats why the nightclub was called the stingray. Makes sense! I think we have to go on one of these walking tours of Downtown San Diego now.

Selling women and minors isn’t cool it’s a dark sad history many of the girls were 12-17 and weren’t seen as valuable human life. A young girl was thrown out of one of the brothel windows in downtown because he was dissatisfied with his service…she was 13… he was then given another girl and apologize to. It’s crazy how we still view suffering victims as somthing cool
