As a Cards fan, if O'neill returns to his 2021 form this year it will feel like when a girl you really liked moves to a different city so you break up rather than do long distance, and then a while later you see that she has a new boyfriend, which is okay because you parted with her on good terms and you really do want the best for her, but at the same time it just makes you wonder what could've been, even if you still know that going your separate ways was the best decision for both of you.

Mid-season review Garcia: -1 (.630 OPS, not much worse than 2023) O’Neil: +2 (if you need an OF, get a struggling cardinal idk) Gorman: -1 (league average currently) Rodgers: +1 (league average, better than 80 ops+ at least) Langeliers: 0 (doing the same thing he was doing before)

As a catcher enjoyer, do you ever think that the catcher position is actually undervalued by the defensive spectrum? The career war leaderboard for catcher seems to lag way behind the other positions, and I feel like catchers never get MVP buzz.

Fwar is definitely better than bwar for catchers, but also catchers are just generally disadvantaged with WAR because most have fewer PA’s than other position players. So I’ve always preferred judging them relative to other catchers.

Part of it is that WAR is a volume stat and catchers play inherently less due to wear and tear. If you were to look at catchers in terms of fWAR/600 PA or fWAR/150 games played they’d rank higher.

@@FoolishBailey I get that, but doesn't the fact that you play a position that you can't play as much make the inherent value of playing it well for a long time higher? which in some ways could mean that the fWAR/PA of a catcher should be higher than, not the same as, the other positions.

I was also thinking Nolan would go off this year! I think he winds up in the 3 or 4 spot of that lineup and can find a lot of RBIs with guys like Edman and Donovan in front of him and have a bunch of runs with Goldy / Nado behind him

He's not batting 3rd or 4th with Goldy and Arenado behind him. Those two guys are batting either 2nd and 3rd or 3rd and 4th like usual. If Gorman bats clean up, it will be *behind* those two stars.

@@Compucles yeah thinking about it a bit more, I think you're right with at least Goldy. Their ideal lineup will be Donovan / Edman / Noot Goldy Gorman Nado Looks like that's what they mostly did last year anyways. Either way it can be a solid lineup surrounding him so he should have a bit season

It would not surprise me if Tyler O'Neill had a bounceback year. I think it was awful, what John Mozeliak and Oliver Marmol did in calling him out. It probably was the beginning of the clubhouse morale woes that were part of the Cards' losing season last year. As for Nolan Gorman... IT'S GORMIN' TIME!
