OMGosh, you are sooo correct on these!! I have mentioned before that I purchased some plants because of the hype.. but NOW, absolutely not. The compacta I wouldn't get for that exact reason, hiding places for mealybugs and with me being new to hoyas, I'm doing my best to keep up with treating some and not looking to seek out more hiding places bahhh!!! Keep these coming, I do beat myself up sometimes saying I shouldn't have purchased them if I wouldn't go above to keep them alive and healthy. So it helps to see these and read the comments on how others struggle too. Great plant fam!

Many thanks for this video. Interesting to watch. I agree with one of your viewer’s comments. Some plants seem to come from healthier stock/genes than others. A few of my Hoyas are not as healthy looking as they were during the growing season but I’m hoping it’s the Winter season and not a decline in their health that is the cause. On the other hand I have five 6 in pots of Hoyas that are growing like they have no clue it’s Winter. 😂. I do still get some mealy bugs from time to time and usually after two treatments, the mealies are gone. Wishing much good luck to all of us Hoya lovers! 👌🪴🥰

I so agree with the linearis. I've been fighting mealies on mine for a while now. I remove them and drench them in alcohol. I even had a ladybug party and they are still coming back. Compacta's are just as difficult. I'm on my second. After this one dies. I'm done.

Hi Jaclynn, you are looking so pretty, that first Hoya is one I have never seen in person. I have always had the buy 3 rule, I will buy a plant up to 3 times and usually by the third time I have figured out what I was doing wrong and then it stays alive, and if it doesn't then I won't buy it a 4th time ever! I have also never seen the Hoya linearis in person, and it is on my wish list. I only have the Hoya green hindu rope, I love the variegated one but have not ever found one yet, I have to say that those stinking mealy bugs are such a pain in the butt, this last year in December was the first year I ever got mealy bugs, and I still don't know why I ended up with those stupid bugs. I have the plain green Hoya kerrii, I got it for only 9.99 and it is doing just fine, knock on wood it doesn't have mealy bugs. Your 5th Hoya is so pretty and I have wanted one of those, but it is on my wish list as well. I agree about plants that we like and plants that we are not fond of. There are some Calathea that I am not a fan of, those plants can be tricky and I have struggled with those in the winter especially. Thanks again for another great video, take care and have a great day, sending love and hugs, bye! 😢😻💜💜💜👍🪴🌹🌵

Just here to support Ficus lovers. 😂Definitely have grown and killed many plants and I’ve never not grown a ficus from a sing leaf. They’re underrated super stars for real. I will say that it was only recently that I realized scale is a huge reason why any plant I would get would start dying. All those stems that for years people told me were, “woody” ….definitely scale. I’ve noticed a huge difference in plants not dying when I started making my own horticultural white oil concentrate to mix with water and treat them with. (Castille/Or wood soap and baby oil)

I feel like you might be an underwaterer. All of those hoyas mentioned are thirstier varieties. I had the opposite issue as I'm an overwaterer lol! The biggest issue with hoyas is some of those can get dry rot so quick with under watering. Then you drench it once every 2 to 3 weeks and it goes downhill. My linearis gets watered almost every 4 days religiously haha! Hope you try some again!!

I’m honestly shocked by all the khroniana super silver comments. I’m wondering if a bad batch was mass produced because I’ve never had issues with mine. It’s been a very easy Hoya and I was chronically underwatering it for about a year when I wasn’t caring much for my plants. I bought mine back when they were about 5 times the price you can get them for now. I love mine. I live in the same climate as you too (hello from Massachusetts). I agree on the sigillatis. Never owned one but those are known for being difficult. My mom has one and it periodically dies back for no apparent reason. I also agree on the Hindu rope. I don’t own one specifically because I have no clue how I would treat it for pests.

I haven’t had many issues with my Hoya but I do have my concerns with my khroniana Eskimo(?) it’s the only Hoya I think I’ve sunburnt. I keep them all in a north west window with a uv blocking window film. Most of my other Hoyas get the red sunstressed new growth, but the khroniana got whitish yellow fading on the leaves and I had to move it back. Such a bummer because they’re not the fastest growing plants.

This came up in my feed. Yes can relate to the krohniana. They are hard to propagate. More than 50% failure rate for me. My Krohniana black was doing great and suddenly got root rot so I put it in water to reroot and glad it’s slowly rooting. Also agree with the kerrii. It gets tall and leggy and I’m going to put a rabbit fence around the pot to help it. Not thrilled with that and its flowers drip sap. So we will see about keeping that one. Have you done an update lately? Thanks for sharing

Agree, Jaclynn....if your hoyas don't bring you joy and happiness anymore I can't blame you for not buying them anymore. It should be a hobby of love not a fear of drudgery cleaning mealybugs all the time. I have one with zero issues. I’ve underwatered it too and it was no problem for it. It didn’t grow much when I was chronically underwatering but it’s much bigger than it was when I got it. I think sometimes the vigor depends on how healthy the plant is when you got it. I got mine back when it was $50 for just a small little pot of it (you can get the same size for about $10 now) and it’s been very rewarding.

My list would be different but I support anyone having a list like this! For me, the incrassata I have is so hard and if it dies I will NOT re-buy. Most of the "DO NOT TRY AGAIN" list for me are peperomia. ;)

I don't even bother with peperomia anymore 🤣

Hoya Incrassata should be fairly straight forward. Humidity should be around 80% so a cabinet or greenhouse, don't try a humidity tray, though I actually use them in the display cabinet, then all you need is a fan to move the air around. You can also keep a few leafy peperomias in there.

@@jhowardsupporter thanks for your suggestion. I don’t have a cabinet. The incrassata has mostly bounced back though and is doing fine in household humidity.

@@NewUkeNewYork A cabinet is a worthy investment and I bet Americans can get a cheaper one than the Ikea ones. I'm the ultimate money saver and I've decided to get 5 orchid flasks which will be around 500 Australian and will land me 100 new miniature orchids, probably worth a few thousand when grown but they are not for sale. Just having like 20 of these miniature phalaenopsis all in flower will be amazing. Anyway a greenhouse setup is highly recommended, then next most important is colored plants to break up the green like dwarf coleus, begonia rex hybrids, fuchsias with their flowers and so on.

@@jhowardsupporter I have a one bedroom apartment that's already full, and enough plants to take care of that do fine without a cabinet, so the space needed and additional tasks don't fit my situation. But your advice may help someone else. Sounds like you have a beautiful collection!

I too cannot keep a sigillatis alive for long along with the Krohniana. The leaves on the latter stay thin and slightly wrinkled all the time. I have 3 of them and they all act the same. even tho they are frequent bloomers I will not be purchasing them again.

Systemic is extremely harmful to the environment, pets, and good bugs (esp. bees!!). It’s actually illegal to use in certain states because of how harmful it is. There are much more natural methods that work way better!

Let them get bone dry and then soak them thoroughly. I soak mine in a bucket for 10 minutes. Hang it and let it drip dry. Don’t water again until bone dry again. Their leaves hold a lot of water so they don’t need watering very often.
