This was an awesome video for me to provide my own professional development today. I am a newbie coming into the reading intervention world, but not new to the world of reading and this video definitely gave me clarity and provided effective instructional focuses for reading intervention! Great job!

Hi Nicole! I'm so glad the video helped you! As teachers, it's very easy to overcomplicate our interventions. It's not easy, but in can be simplified.

I have been teaching Grade 1 ELs for 11 years. I use Systematic Sequential Phonics They Use for the Phonics piece. AMAZING. My students love it. We lovingly call it "The Phonics Game". I agree about writing. Students really enjoy writing about topics of interest to them. My masters degree focus was on process writing, so I have taught first graders many revising and editing tips through their original pieces of writing. Systematic Sequential Phonics They Use by Patricia Cunningham has a review day every five days, so I use the built in review day as out writing day. One requirement is that new piece must include at least one of new word wall words from the 4 previous lessons. Thank you for this video. You have motivated me to do Heggerty daily.

I find that teaching readers how to annotate when reading really helps with writing also, because you're writing while you're reading. And this can work for any age, really. On the lower levels, students can just simply write down new or unfamiliar words and maybe a synonym or two as well!

I couldn't agree more! Writing and reading go hand in hand. Writing makes comprehension visible. Such a powerful tool!

Your video was what I think to myself all of the time! We do daily 5/cafe and we hit the strategies that are needed per the students needs. Higher readers get comprehension strategies and struggling readers get accuracy and fluency strategies. This seems to work so well! I have arranged that my third round is a writing round and we assign a writing for the week with a four block. We start out giving them the topic sentence and conclusion sentence. Then, the students come to me for editing. I send them back afterwards to re-write it on their nice writing paper. Once it’s done, I hole punch it, write the date and add it to their binder. If they have time through the week, they work on their own “fun writing” and those get added to their binders as well. By the end of the year, it’s like they have a book the read. It’s wonderful and you see the progress all in one binder!

I LOVE the idea of a writing binder! It's a working and useful portfolio that students can review and reflect! Well done!

Writing is a window to comprehension and an important tool for applying phonics skills and mastering spelling. You are wise to bring it in😊

Thank you for this focus. A reminder at the first of the school year to stay on task with the main 5 and bonus baby writing. Do you have a video on how you organize these skills in a weekly schedule? Such as what you do each day for the week? K-6 grade guidance in scheduling appreciated.
@EmilyMuccianti
@EmilyMuccianti Жыл бұрын
Depending on the grade level, I would only focus on 2 (maybe 3) of the skills during the week. For example, k-1 would focus on PA and phonics (particularly blending). 3-4 might focus on a phonics skill with maybe the addition of a fluency component. It just depends on the need of the group. It really goes back to what the data indicates is needed.

I really like the idea of writing that you brought up. For me writing and reading are like siamese twins needed to drive what is read to long term memory. Some teachers have used the Journal writing period in the morning to let students write on any topic.

Mrs. Muccianti, thank you for this excellent video! Very informative and helpful for choosing important target areas of focus. But I was wondering if you had any specific interventions that you use for each of these specific focus areas. Unfortunately, I know that could be a whole 10 videos worth of content in itself. Anyways, keep up the great work!

Thank you! Good point about focusing on what is most important. Who is the author of Six Minute Solutions?
@EmilyMuccianti
@EmilyMuccianti Жыл бұрын
Hi Linda! Gail Adams is one of the coauthors. I have emailed with her about the future of the product. It is temporarily out of print so search for used versions, but there is a glimmer of hope that it will come back at some point. Not sure what that iteration will look like, but I’m super hopeful! I sat in on a session with Linda Farrel yesterday from Readsters who has a great adaptation to fluency building and uses Six Minute Solution. Check that out if you have a chance.

Hi Jason! When I taught middle school, we blocked my classes so one period was English and the other was intervention. That gave me the flexibility time so that I could adequately support my students in both areas. I built in fluency support with repeated reading and also used REWARDS for multi syllabic word decoding support in addition to our core 7th grade ELA curriculum. It was a beautiful structure!
