You missed one of the best examples: The Common Carp. Introduced around the world, a real problem in a lot of countries, but considered vulnerable in their native habitat in southeastern Europe/southwestern Asia. The Romans spread them around the rest of Europe, and they're so well established in places like the UK that most people don't even realise they aren't native.
@chaosgoettin
@chaosgoettin 2 жыл бұрын
Sparrows are like that, too, at least in continental Europe. The Mongols brought them with them, unintentionally, as these birds followed the trail of horses around. since horse don't digest all the fodd, they not only ate the seeds out of the poop, but also found seeds around in every area. That's how they established all around Europe. They did flew over the channel at some point, cause it's not really a large distance for the birds, I guess? But they are so widespread and common now, nobody would've thought they aren't locals, but became a local species over time. This is how migration works, kids.
@jic1

The pond slider is one of the most popular pet turtles around the world. As they can live up to 50 years, many of them has been released to the wild, making it an invasive spices across the world.... except for it's original habitat of the South-East United States, where their numbers are threatened via capture by the very same pet trade, that makes them an invasive spices everywhere else.

The Chinese Mitten Crab 大閘蟹 would be a pretty interesting example, its been mixed and cross breed so much in the modern days in Asia that the very original breed is thought to have been lost in the wild and farms, until they found the species invalid Germany and a few other European water speculated during the 1800's, and as this crab is a delicacy during the late autumn (right now), they are being reintroduced back into Hong Kong and China as the "True One" and sold for a premium, where they were dirt cheap and encouraged to capture in the Europe.

I feel personally a better example would be the wattled-necked softshell turtle, as they're both invasive in Hawaii and Critically-Endangered, also there's some good NZ examples like the green-golden bell frog (endangered), and a number of wallabies introduced on Kawau Island, like the Parma (thought extinct until pop. was found on Kawau and later one on mainalnd Aus, Near Threatened), an extinct subspecies of the Tammar and Brush Tailed Rock (Vulnerable, with most of it's habitat recently being destroyed by last years bushfires). Along with Sambar and Rusa deer which are Vulnerable due to Indonesia and their track record of conservation.

This is a really good video! Im actually making a research paper about genetic/evolutionary changes in invasive species. My first one is the anoles in Florida
@Annie_Annie__
@Annie_Annie__ 2 жыл бұрын
I live in south Texas and we have issues with anoles too. When I was a kid in the 90s green anoles (native) were *everywhere*. I used to catch them in jars, observe them for a while, then let them go in a tree or bushes. But now you rarely, if ever, see the green ones. My kid didn’t even know that they change color because he doesn’t see them often enough to observe them. Whereas it was common for people to call them “chameleons” or “false chameleons” when I was young because they changed colors. If you climb trees, you sometimes find green anoles in the treetops (we have relatively short, stubby trees. Mesquites and the like), but that’s it. Now it’s all brown anoles. Brown anoles everywhere. I have to shoo them from my porch when the sun is out to be able to get in my front door, lol. Funnily enough, though, the herons and egrets have learned to love eating the brown anoles. They’re just not eating them fast enough to control the population. Especially for the inland areas.

Pronunciation tip; The "ch" in Chinook is pronounced like "sh". Another species for this list is the Red-Crowned Parrot, a type of Amazon native to northeastern Mexico and extreme south Texas. They are endangered in their native range but have been introduced into Southern California (Los Angeles area and San Diego). They are now more numerous in their introduced range than in their native range and there is talk of using the introduced birds to restock the native range with some. I actually remember when Java Sparrows were sold in pet stores when I was younger. They were banned in California where I live for the specific reasons you mentioned about crop damage as CA is a huge agriculture state.

Another example of this is the European rabbit. A lot of people know that it's an invasive species in Australia, but in its native range in Western Europe, it's an endangered species along with the Iberian lynx. This is (ironically) because of the Myxoma virus that was originally used to control the rabbit population in Australia, although it wasn't very effective there and yet it severly reduced the European population. Only time will determine the future of the Australian and European populations.

It could be the species only way to survive into the future, as it becomes extinct in its native country. I think in particular of the wild cattle (Banteng) that are endangered in Asia and declining rapidly, but are an invasive species in Australia, as well and the Asian Water buffalo.

Java Sparrows, like most munias, are vegetarian and they do eat grain. They are entirely too small to feed on locusts.
@motherlandbot6837
@motherlandbot6837 2 жыл бұрын
Wild Java Sparrows are dependent on cultivated rice as a food source, and their WILD distribution closely coincides with rice cultivation. Like the great majority of munias, they rear their young almost entirely on semiripe seeds in the wild. Although these are lower in protein and fat than ripe seeds, they are much easier to digest. Just as importantly, eating the unripe soft husk of seeds provides B complex and other vitamins that are lost when the husks of ripe seeds are discarded. Java Sparrows in captivity and feral Javas will shun rice if they get a taste of Proso Millet, the large creamy white millet in budgie and finch and cheap canary (which won't eat millet unless they are starving) mixes. Feral Javas will swarm feeders provisioned with budgie (parakeet here in the US) mix. As my predecessor pointed out, Munias don't feed significant amounts of insects to their young, and even the powerful bills of adult Javas can't deal with baby Locusts! You're confusing Javas with Asian Tree Sparrows (Passer montanus), from persistent and self aggrandizing fiction that Mao's (a science illiterate peasant) efforts at exterminating the latter In China during the 1960s triggered the locust plagues that led to massive famines. Tree Sparrows are inefficient predators on Locusts (China has 5 species of locusts that can undergo population explosions); they can only tackle 1st and 2nd instar nymphs and even the latter are rarely taken as they defend themselves by kicking at the eyes of sparrows that grasp them with their short conical granivore bills with their spiny hind limbs. Adult Tree Sparrows rarely eat insects for themselves, they feed these and by preference over locusts, any soft bodied insects such as small caterpillars and aphids to their nestling and fledglings. Locusts have population explosions when ideal combinations of rainfall, temperature, and low rates of diseases enable large numbers of nymphs to survive, triggering transformation into a migratory gregarious phase. This transformation is triggered AFTER locusts are too big for Tree Sparrows to use them as food for their young! Climate and disease, not predators, are what limit the formation of locust swarms. Specialist opportunist swarming locust predators such as Rosy Starlings (Pastor roseus) increase their reproductive rates in RESPONSE to locust swarms; they absolutely DON'T benefit from preventing them! Today, Asian Tree Sparrows are abundant in every Asian city where severe smog has not occurred recently. In Japan, huge synanthropic populations of nest robbing and fledgling eating Carrion and Large Billed Crows drastically limit populations of Tree Sparrows and feral Pigeons. Australia kills every Asian Tree Sparrow that shows itself on their shores, but they have lots of related House Sparrows, yet their interior regions are periodically plagued by swarming locusts! Meanwhile, House Sparrow populations have declined sharply in many European countries (tsk, tsk ...), and these are freely killed as invasive pests that displace native bluebirds and other obligate cavity nesting birds here in the US. Correlation does not equal causality!

Even though I, a Javanese, have never seen a Java sparrow fly wild,.The children here sometimes take chicks from their nests just to play.Bird hunting for pets is also common, they just put the birds in narrow cages and don't try to breed them. 1:33 And this is one of the big reasons why you should buy captive bred, not wild caught! Captive breeding takes the burden off of the wild populations. And if an animal isn't available captive bred, don't get it unless a) you're an experienced breeder of related species and intend to start breeding this species, or b) you're rescuing an animal in need.

There’s also one of the most infamous invasives, the European rabbit, which is actually dwindling in number in its native range. That being the Iberian peninsula.

Y’all wanna know something crazy? Not only are Aoudad(Barbary Sheep) more populous in the US(mostly wild in eastern New Mexico/Western Texas) they’re actually preferred hunting then the local desert Bighorn sheep bc of their infringing on resources of the desert bighorn.

Yeah I don't know how people hunt them more than they do Bighorn. Aoudads taste terrible!

Talk about oxymoronic. It would be awesome if you did a top 10 invasive species per state. I’m sure some would repeat but still fascinating! Just a suggestion. Keep up the great work!
