Ok so technically it's more than 5 books, but I only fully recommended 4, and people seem to like lists and numbers so I thought I'd roll with it. So yeah. If you've been wondering 'What do I need for film school' I hope this gives you some ideas!
Books recommended in this video (Affiliate Links):
The Cinema Book: amzn.to/2Xk11JT
The Movie Book: amzn.to/2YshqZ6
100 Ideas That Changed Film: amzn.to/2J6kdBU
DSLR Cinema: amzn.to/2J8xQAJ
On Filmmaking: amzn.to/2FNkTds
My goodness there are a lot of books, aren't there?
Here are the books I mentioned/showed, but didn't technically recommend:
History of Film: amzn.to/2Xk1wDL
The Story of Film: amzn.to/2J6R09W
Cinema: The Whole Story: amzn.to/2J5YnhW
Oxford Guide to Film Studies: amzn.to/2xqMHjh
The Fictional Christopher Nolan: amzn.to/2xqNXmm
British Cinema: The 1990s: amzn.to/2xtrxRv
Big Book of Noir: amzn.to/2YwIM0m
Film Noir (Taschen): amzn.to/2J7Oj8o
The Extraordinary image: amzn.to/2XphagW

thank you so much for your reccomendations! I'm a new film student who doesn't know where to start and would like to broaden my knowledge aside from what I'll learn in school, so seeing all these wonderful books with your insight definitely made me feel more at ease! I have all in my amazon wishlist and some in my cart as I typed this! Again, thank you!!

I’m glad! The hope is it’s really useful to anyone who was in the same position I was a few years ago, so it’s great to hear it’s worked for you!

Analyzing film can be quite difficult and I’m trying to make my own films but I get so distracted and lost. Don’t know where to begin

Oh, trust me I feel the same way. Particularly over the last year. I think the big secret is that it doesn't matter where you start, only that you do. Get some momentum going and you can correct your course on the way!

Depends entirely on the film school! I studied Film Production at University of Westminster. My course had like... a 70% 30% split, so we were making a lot of films, but we were also studying a lot of film history and writing essays. I know that some other film schools are entirely practical based, with the only essay writing being bits of "Here were my intentions and influences".

i dont like that this is about film essays and not making films. Guess film school isnt worth it

Eh. It's a mixed bag! The university I was in was super competitive for major roles on the film productions, so I ended up a lot more focused on the theory side. It gave me some really useful context about film history and genre, etc. which is still serving me fairly well! But this video isn't really so much about whether or not film courses are worth it, and more about what books are useful once you're studying it anyway!

Confusing video. Next time, please hold up the books and keep their images stable and on-screen for at least 20 seconds. That we we can actually see the books you so generously recommend. Thanks kindly.
