I've never heard of conditioning with saddle soap. I use it to clean very dirty leather with some water and a brush so it gets nicely lathered up. My experience is that it's a great cleaner that dries the leather out a bit, not a conditioner at all. I always have to condition after using saddle soap. It leaves a film because you're supposed to use it with water and wipe it off, just like you wouldn't use soap as a hand lotion.

Thanks for the love Rose Anvil! Would love to send you our Water Protectant No. 3 formula as it was specifically formulated to protect leather against the elements/moisture/water/snow/etc. The beautiful thing about this protectant is that it is able to provide a high level of water repellency WITHOUT clogging up the pores of the leather. This allows the leather to continue to breathe, which is super important. As you likely know, all of our products are not only made from ALL-NATURAL, but cosmetic grade ingredients. Don't hesitate to reach out should you have questions at any time! Cheers.

Good comparison. When cleaning my saddle and horse gear saddle soap works into the leather best when the applicator is quite damp. The moisture on the applicator allows the saddle soap to lather up which allows best cleaning and penetration.

The Best? The best I've used is Obenauf's, they have a wax and a oil. They do darken the leather quite a bit, but if you're worried about work boots that aren't meant to be pretty, Obenauf's is fantastic. I've brought weathered and sundried saddlebags back from the dead with that stuff, really impressive.

I always used plain old mink oil, but I got a jacket I wanted to soften up, and I found a product by Obenauf"s. It has some additional additives to deter mold and mildew and bacteria. I've used it on three pr of boots, and applied it like twice in a few days, and that was all I did, seems to work well. Ingredients are not disclosed so there is some secret formula that they protect.

The Chamberlain's Leather Milk is the best one. I have been using it for many years. Chamberlain's Leather Milk is very safe to all kinds of leather and colors because it doesn't react with leather to change original leather color. It also has very nice smell and the nice smell remains on the jackets for a long time. The jackers never go bad smell with the Chamberlain's Leather Milk.

Love your videos. You are obvioisly a gifted leather worker. However, these are fair criticisms. And it's nice to see a few mistakes sometimes. Reminds us KZfaqrs don't always have a team of writers. But yes sir, there are a few things to note. The saddle soap as many others have pointed out. It's purely a cleaner. It is important to apply with a wet applicator only after rubbing the applicator on the soap cake until it begins to froth. Then either wipe off immediately, or lit it dry then brush off. The discoloration you noted with the saddle soap is a result of it drying out the leather beneath. That's when you would reach for the other items you have in this video. As far as the conditioners you have in your video, they each have their strengths for specific use cases. The mink oil is an excellent choice for restoring older leather pieces. It also contains natural water resistant properties. Not as strong as the Aussie, but certainly better than the other items. I say that, but the leather conditioner has the potential to give the mink oil a run for it's money. Depending on the type. Fiebings leather balm has atom wax mixed in with it. This serves as a wax coating when buffed in. The Aussie is great for purses or handbags that are exposed to the elements due to it's higher water resistance. This is owed to it's petroleum base with need wax additive. All great products depending on what you need to use it on. Just taking the chance to return the favor for all of the knowledge you've shared to everyone that has watched your excellent videos!

Hi, I love your videos, especially the one on leather 101. I use mink oil a bit for my belstaff jackets and some boots. I've a quick question...is there any point in conditioning genuine leather that has quite a heavy 'plastic' finish to it? I would assume these finishes prevent to conditioner being absorbed into the leather? Also, if you've any coasters spare send them my way!

Just discovered your channel. Have tons of leather gear. What's your thoughts on Obenauf? Have been using their wax and conditioner for decades with pretty decent results. Used to use saddlesoap for cleaning, but Obenaufs cleaner does the same job too, so now I'll swap for whatever is available when I need it.

We just did a GIANT order of harnesses which means we have tons of scraps! So instead of just picking 10 winners, I decided to send everyone who has commented as of (3pm MST on 10/25/19) a set of coasters. So CONGRATS! I just need you to send me your name and mailing address to service@roseanvil.com and we will get some in the mail for you! To make things easier on my end I will be sending these out on Tuesday in a big batch so please send me your address by Monday (10/28)! So don't miss that deadline if you want some. *Unfortunately we can only send free coasters to people with a US address.

Any more coasters?? Haha, either way, your videos are great. I also loved your video about cleaning boots--you only used 2 products--much more my style. I'm just recently getting into boots and boot care, so your simplified methods (as well as your in-depth Thorogood Moc Toe vid) help a lot. Keep doing what you're doing! Good stuff.

I can’t remember how I came across your channel. I usually watch anime and rap stuff, but I don’t regret anything. I’m learning so much!

You should also check out Obenauf's! Their heavy duty stuff is popular with loggers and people who work in extreme conditions. It may be something to consider.
