But I think nowadays most people say "berimbolo" to refer to some (or all) of its variations, like crab ride, twister hook, car jack / hip wedge, double leg berimbolo, etc. Keenan made his video to refer specifically to the classic berimbolo from shallow DLR, but a lot of people use the word "berimbolo" to refer to an entire family of techniques, not just that one move. If the statement is "the classic berimbolo from a shallow DLR hook doesn't result in a lot of back takes in high level BJJ," okay that's a true statement I guess, but it's also applicable to pretty much all techniques that have been around for a while. You don't see a lot of people get their backs taken in the Mundials finals, period. You also don't see too many traditional triangles, armbars, kimuras, etc. It doesn't matter what technique is being used, if it's a move that's been around for a while, you can be pretty sure that a Mundials finalist has pretty good defense against it. If the statement is "the classic berimbolo from a shallow DLR hook is useless in high level BJJ", I'd argue that's not true. The ability to threaten with a berimbolo knockdown is a key part of some people's DLR games, and it can result in sweeps, guard passes, and transitions to other guards. In the defense that Keenan shows, any decent berimbolo person knows that there are ways to transition to the waiter sweep position, the crab ride, and single leg X guard from there, and these are pretty good guards. It's like saying "jabs are useless because they just set up other techniques, they don't result in KO's". And if the statement is "the berimbolo *family* of attacks (ie, not just confined to the classic berimbolo from shallow DLR) doesn't result in back takes", that's totally false -- and I think Keenan would agree (he specifically says the crab ride is a good back taking position). The berimbolo family of techniques is used extensively by guys like Craig Jones, Gordon Ryan, the Miyao brothers, Mikey Musumeci, Rafa Mendes, etc against other high level opponents to take their backs. Rafa used a berimbolo from the top of 50/50 to take Cobrinha's back in the 2015 Mundials finals. Gordon Ryan did two berimbolo-style back takes in ADCC 2019 -- one against Lucas Barbosa (twister hook variation), one against his teammate Garry Tonon (crab ride variation). Craig Jones has hit them on a lot of opponents (usually the car jack / hip wedge variation). And Felipe Pena hit it twice on Gordon Ryan (car jack / hip wedge variation).
