I'm having this same problem as of late. The art of a band having the mix your own take mentallity is almost gone, especially with drummers. Great channel I'm glad I found it.

Good stuff. I find myself thinking of vocalists as too loud more often than too quiet. So that was an interesting perspective to hear. Getting vocal levels to set perfectly well in a mix is very difficult. 100% agreed on editing takes. It's both faster workflow and better results going to the effort of getting great takes rather than just working with "good enough" ones. Took me a long time to figure that out, though, learning the hard way.

What do you think about click tracks? Can you still have an organic good feeling rock track with a click?

Hi Danny, you can still have an organic feeling if you are using a click track. "Organic" is a rather abitrary term and can refer to different aspects of a recording or mix. Recording to a click is often crucial for a coherent tempo, but it is up to the engineer whether they edit every single hit to the grid or leave some minor and almost inaudible variations. This should not be confused with "saving" an untight performance. Other aspects like the sound of the drums itself and the mixing approach also influence whether the sound is perceived as organic or not. Best wishes

Not only can you have an organic feel with a click track, you can create an organic feel building drums using MIDI. I had to build 2 albums' worth of drum tracks and make them sound and feel as if they were recorded and mixed by a real person (we named him Daryl). It's all gonna come down to how the talent is feeling when you record. Organic is good, Inorganic is good, but you can't shake a performance that came from a bad mood.

I don't believe in too loud or too quiet with regard to vocals. If I turn the mains down to where I can barely hear anything, I should be able to pick out each mix element. If I can hear everything clearly, we're good, let's turn it back up and adjust a little more. Rinse and repeat until you're either satisfied or need a listening break.
