When you think of military airplanes, you think fighter jets, and any real pilot will tell you that’s the ultimate dream; to fly a fighter jet that’s fast with awesome aerobatic characteristics. But most people including certified pilots will never get the opportunity to fly a fighter jet like an F-16. But you can fly lighter airplanes with similar looks and aerobatic features.
Here I present to you some of the best light aerobatic aircrafts in the industry today. Many of these airplanes can be bought as certified aircraft or you can build one as an experimental. Airplanes like the shark and Van RV-8 are both homebuilt kit airplanes. Much more affordable and ver low maintenance cost on these light aircraft because they use a Rotax 912 or Rotax 914 engine. These airplanes are also capable cross country airplanes. Because of that small engine that only sips about 5 gallons of fuel per hour, you have an incredible amount of flight time available to you. All but the Diamond Dart-450.
Here the 5 airplanes listed
Shark: Considered the fastest ultralight aircraft in Europe (It’s really not). Does travel fast at a respectable cruise speed of 146 knots per hour. The shark was formerly designed and manufactured in Slovakia. This year though you can get one in the United states as a build kit in the experimental aircraft category
Engine: Rotax 912
Cruise speed: 146 knots
Stall speed: 35 knots
Fuel consumption: 5 gallons per hour
Price: $151,000
Tarragon: The Tarragon is another ultralight sports airplane designed and produced in Europe. With it’s sleek design and agile behavior, I had to put this airplane on the list. Although the Tarragon project is still being developed, you can still buy one in the nearest future. Great performance with the small Rotax engine. Nice retractable gears and cruise speeds of 150 knots per hour while only burning 4.5 gallons of fuel per hour.
Engine: Rotax 912 or 914
Cruise speed: 150 knots
Stall speed: 35 knots
Fuel consumption: 4.5 gallons per hour
Price: $180,000
Black Shape Prime: A superb light aircraft that i’ve personally followed for years. The Black Shape Prime may be the only airplane on this list with a luxurious interior or cabin space. Unlike the other airplanes Blackshape prime also comes standard with safety features like a parachute onboard. You also get a Dynon skyview standard for your avionics panel.
Engine: Rotax 912 or Rotax 914
Cruise speed: 150 knots
Stall speed: 35 knots
Fuel consumption: gallons per hour
Price: $200,000
Vans RV-8: Vans aircraft company is already a staple in the Aviation industry, especially among homebuilders. Vans provides affordable airplane kits for pilots/builder who are willing to take on the task. The RV-8 is one of Vans aerobatic airplane model. And this airplane in fact doesn’t disappoint. It is also the only airplane on the list that’s a tail dragger. With the RV8 You also get multiple engine options that is not a rotax. The Lycoming IO-360 180HP is a popular and entry level option among builders. More power for more performance.
Engine: Lycoming IO-360 180HP
Cruise speed: 165 knots
Stall speed: 44 knots
Fuel consumption: 9 gallons per hour
Price: $99,000
Diamond Dart-450: The Diamond Dart is technically still a prototype airplane in development phase. This airplane is mainly geared towards military training. It can be owned and flown by civilians, but be ready to pay the high purchase and maintenance cost. The diamond Dart will have a turbo prop engine that gets you to cruise speeds of 250 knots or more. Even for the average pilot, that’s really fast. And the price tag on this baby is $3.1 million. Operating cost, you’re looking at around $500 per hour. Yea not a cheap airplane to fly.
Engine: N/A
Cruise speed: 250 knots
Stall speed: N/A
Fuel consumption: N/A
Price: $3,100,000

You do realise that you can own any unclassified military aircraft, as long as you do two things. 1. Remove all classified or otherwise protected military equipment. 2. Unless you want to register your aircraft as a destructive device and pay for a $200 tax stamp. Remove the targeting pod and/or weapon stations depending on the aircraft. The only real limiting factor is money.

It's still only $200, which is nothing compared to the price of the plane.

@@geronimo5537 That's not why. When you send a letter in the mail they will use an inked stamp to stamp your stamp but you don't say "I got a stamp stamp" to mail the letter. People are just weird and like to make things complicated. Admit it.

Mike, I appreciate that you keep your narrative style geared more toward the non-pilot even as you've worked your way through to become a pilot. These are "military (fighter) style" airplanes because they have tandem seating. He could have used that same title and showcased WWI and WWII replicas but since he didn't he's referring to airplanes that resemble the Tucano.

Mike, Enjoyed the video. I like that you’re featuring European ultralights which I think are very advanced and do not get enough coverage here in the US. There are a lot of great aircraft in Europe that Americans don’t know about. Maybe we’ll get our laws changed soon that will allow these aircraft to be sold in the US without the Experimental tag. Keep up the good work!

It's amazing how much they get from the rotax in a few of them. They're 2/3's or so the performance at a fraction of the cost of other high performance planes. Although if the Diamond is anything like a Super Tucano it's going to be a awesome ride. My friend knows someone with a Shorts Super Tucano and it will leave you speechless. I might be mistaken but I'm pretty sure it's got a 1100hp Garret up front and it's a rocket. I was smiling so much after a little ride it started to hurt. I'd possibly give up sex for one if it came with a unlimited budget to run it lol.

You have a habit of saying knots per hour. That is incorrect, a knot already has time integrated, unlike miles that has no time integrated until you specify MPH... Other than that, I enjoy your videos. By the way, if you want to go over 200 knots in comfort get a pressurized Skymaster. $65,000 will get you one with 600ish hour engines and a 20,000 foot cruise altitude. The only plane I enjoyed fly more was a Lear 24.

I was thinking the same thing. Claiming aerobatic capabilities necessitates a decent g load capability. Just because they look like it, doesn't mean they are capable. Some of these may be no more capable than a C172 for all we know, and the sleek aero design could be simply for speed and distance performance.

As an LSA these aircraft have to be certified to minimum +4-2 gs here in the USA. If they are certified for aerobatics then it’s +6-3 gs. That’s minimum as per regulation. They may very well be more than those numbers.

@@joule9255 they are far from rare, mig 21 is one of the most produced modern fighter jets. It might be tricky to acquire but if you know ppl shouldn't be much of a problem. I love your videos, but you have one habit that unfortunately sets off my OCD. You keep saying "knots per hour". Knots are nautical miles per hour. It's already 'per hour'. So in my head you keep saying "nautical miles per hour per hour". Just say knots, that's how the word is used.
@PaulAnthonyDuttonUk
@PaulAnthonyDuttonUk 6 жыл бұрын
Chatsu8o So can't be knots per year then? A knot is a measure of distance only. You can record the knot against what ever time scale you choose. Time scales are not implied just commonly inferred.
@Chatsu8o
@Chatsu8o 6 жыл бұрын
Not to be blut but... No. Knots are specifically defined to be 1 nautical mile PER HOUR. See here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knot_(unit) If you change that, you're changing the very definition of what a knot is. Edit: and it most definitely IS NOT a measure of distance. The "nautical mile" is the measure of distance within a knot. But the knot ties the distance and the time together to form a unit of speed.
@PaulAnthonyDuttonUk

I suggest you upgrade your intellect Ed Crew. There has been widespread use of the term "knots per hour" going back over four hundred years by some very eminent voyagers. Admiral George Anson used the term in his book Anson's Voyage Round the World (1748), Captain James Cook used the expression in his book Voyages, (1790), Charles Darwin, used the term in his book The Voyage of the Beagle, (1839), and these are the top echelon of nautical people of their times.

@@cucumberman1234567 I have to say that is a very good comment :) Rarely have I seen two people that were both so right :) As a conclusion I want to add that obviously the unit "knot" means "nautical mile per hour" which is a bit unprecise. But at the same time you have to admit, that "knot" in its original utilization wasn't a distance either. I mean a knot was just a thingy in a line you threw into the water. So even back then they called it knot but instead should have called it "distance between two knots" which obviously seemed a bit too complicated I guess. But today a "knot" in relation to the SI system is well defined and the usage here was wrong.

Yes very nice indeed! But I think the most difficult desire, for a private pilot nowadays, is to have a four places single engine aircraft with basic aerobatic capabilities so thus to enjoy some aerobatics in an weekend and to go in vacation with the family next weekend. Practically nobody, as far as know, is producing any, except the Zlin 143 that have some capabilities. Remain the old ones as Yak-18T; some versions of Beech 33; the 70's IAR 823 (probably the best with real military appearance, but few remains); also the old Fuji FA-200 Aero Subaru and that's all I know, pretty shame...I think the Van's RV-14 will come with that desire and looking forward for the first appraisals.
