5 Minute Overclock: Ryzen 9 7950X to 5950 MHz

In this video, we're overclocking the Ryzen 9 7950X CPU up to 5950 MHz in 5 minutes or less using the GIGABYTE X670E Aorus Master motherboard and EK-Quantum custom loop water cooling.
I'll speed-run you through the BIOS settings and provide some notes and tips along the way.

I just got this GIGABYTE X670E AORUS XTREME. Great overcloker. Gigabyte lets you overclock PBO and do a manual overclock. Supper happy with stable overclocks.

Wow, what a performance boost! I didn’t do everything in the tutorial, because of the fact this is a tuning for a different cpu(I have the 7700x), but just turning on a couple options from this video suggestions, & gave me 50-60 more fps. Before I was getting in warzone, 210-230fps minimal graphics settings 1440p, now its over 300fps but of course in warzone it dips but the lowest is 270fps and highest 312fps. This video deserves more recognition from youtube.

Each CPU and system is different, so I don't just recommend copying my settings as they may not work for your CPU. I have Gigabyte B650E Aorus Master motherboard paired with 7950x and I get black screens under heavy load such as Corona Benchmark and Prime95 (small FFTs). I haven't overclocked anything and I haven't changed anything in the BIOS (it's at factory defaults). Any idea what might be causing this? CPU and VRM temps are normal when the issue occurs (checked with hwinfo64). I have 360 AIO Arctic Liquid Freezer II. I tried the latest BIOS too without any change.

The general overclocking principles will apply, but not the Curve Optimizer settings. Those will vary for each individual CPU and the only way to know the best values is by testing it

Zen 4 already has a decoupled Infinity Fabric - Memclock ratio. You would need the IF to run at 3000MHz to match DDR5 6000, as the memory controller would be running at 3000Mhz

@@newaz1268 Think will be better if you set PPT/EDC/TDC limit for about 180W and leave all your other settings intact. This will give you approximately same results with temps around 80C. Nevertheless very interesting approach - I like it a lot.

I have 7950x and the same motherboard but I don't have the Async CPU/PCIe Clock parameter. Is that connected to bios version or? Also I cannot put 107.75 Mhz, it rounds up the value to 108 Mhz automatically, is there anywhere to change that in the settings?

If you have the same X670E Aorus Master, then you should have the same options. Rounding up to 108 sounds like you're configuring the iCLK rather than eCLK.

I have a question. In the pbo+curve opt+e clock overclocking. I understand needing to adjust the curve to hit higher freqs. However why a positive over volt? Could you not just take your previous under volt and add you positive over volt to it resulting in an under volt just not as much? As an example I have a 7950x that is stable at -30 on all but 4 cores 2 at -25 and 2 at -20 if I wanted to add e clock why could it not run at say -15, -10, and -5 by adding a positive 15 over volt to a neg under volt?

Your idea is right. I tried both ways (undervolt-then-eclk and eclk-then-overvolt) and had the best results by using Eclk to increase the frequency and retain stability with overvolt. But results may vary and your approach might be right for your situation

Is Active OC tuner practically the same thing as Dynamic OC switcher from Asus? The "CPU temperature limit" is the point at which manual OC switches back to PBO?

Practically, DOS and AOCT are very similar. I think only DOS switches back to PBO while with AOCT you can use either current or temperature as threshold point.

When we use asynchronous Eclk, we're increasing the effective frequency for a given v/f point. Since the frequency increased, it's possible that the voltage isn't sufficient anymore. So, we can use positive curve optimizer to overvolt that V/F point. This is the opposite of using negative curve optimizer where we undervolt a V/F point. I have the same prozessor but the B650 Aorus Pro AX (X670) Board. The BIOS looks very same. Everytime when i turn on XMP/EXPO in the BIOS an reboot i get the disguisting bluescreen. I use 32GB (2x16GB) G.Skill Trident Z RGB DDR5 PC 6600 CL34 KIT F5-6600J3440G16GX2-TZ5RK. Which parameters i have to change to have the RAM sticks working?

DDR5-6600 is too high for Ryzen 7000. You should be able to easily fix it by running lower memory frequency. Just load the XMP/EXPO profile like you normally do, then manual set the memory frequency to DDR5-6000. This will give you all the memory timing optimizations from the XMP/EXPO profile except for the too-high frequency

DDR5-6000 shouldn't be too difficult for AMD CPUs, even on release BIOSes. Recently, new BIOSes have improved memory overclocking on AMD Ryzen 7000 so I'd first try to see if there's a new BIOS.

I am thinking about 2 Kingston FURY Beast DDR5-6000 C36 DC - 32GB (AMD EXPO) or 4 Kingston FURY Beast DDR5-6000 C36 DC - 32GB (AMD EXPO) Making it 64gb. So 2 stick vs 4 stick. Will 4 stick run with same preformance as 2 stick? Sometimes I need 64gb and I do have 4 4K Monitors with a bunche of programs opened. Another option is to buy 2 stick 32gb, but frequency and latency on those is 5200 40CL. I am using GIGABYTE X670E AORUS XTREME Hovedkort - AMD X670E.

Briefly, yes. It appears the fabric frequency headroom is very limited (up to 2133ish) so I usually just leave it auto. The motherboard auto-rules will usually set it a 2000 MHz.

@@SkatterBencher I found every tick of fclk boosts geekbench performance up until around 2100. Using misc voltage offset seemed to stabilize anything higher but for negligible performance. This is more guess and check overclocking though. Nothing scientific.

To much tweaking man on Asus Strix X670E-F Gaming in bios version 1415 go Advanced -> DOCP Tweaked -> 6000 Mhz, Medium load boost it = Enabled, next PBO = Enabled, Curve Optimizer -> All core -> Negative -> 25 test if its stable at CB23 if ok than go lower by one step each until becomes unstable All the other settings should leave it Auto the motherboard sets it for you ! Test if its stable AIDA 64, CPU-Z, CB23, OCCT whatever ! If you set Dynamic Overclock all goes to hell my CPU temps go 110 Celsius unstable crashes leave it to Auto no changes for CCX1 or CCX2 everything Auto. The PBO 2 mentioned above does everything you need ! Good luck my CCX 0 around 5900 Mhz and CCX 1 5600 Mhz CB23 Score 37,700 pts 95,3 Celsius 214W !

5:42 CPU Vcore 1.25 Volts to achieve clocks above 5950 Mhz it's impossbile, You need at least 1.414 Volts overclocking CPU-s rise core voltages that's a law decreasing CPU voltages limit the CPU frequency what are you doing ?? leave it to Auto let the motherboard decide !

I'm using AOCT to switch between PBO and OC mode at runtime. The 1.25V configured here applies only in case OC mode is active. When OC mode is active, the CPU ratio will be 5025/4975 MHz (CCD0/CCD1). The settings that you told us to use are quite dangerous. You most likely could kill your CPU like that. Plus: i got like 2000 less points compared to CO negative 30.

@@bgtubber Yes, I used these settings. People having different Ram (6000 for example) must not use the same multiplier because it is ending up with having ~6700mhz which might kill your ram right away. It also made my CPU use 0,2V MORE voltage under load, which resulted in having 4400MHz @ ~1,4V at 100%. Compared to CO negative 30 where I have 5500MHz @ ~1,15V at 100%. Both, single core and multi core, had lower performance but way higher voltage, temp, wattage. To me this looks dangerous, like really dangerous to your cpus.

@@stefane.1900 There's a few issues with what you said. You can't kill your RAM by increasing the frequency without increasing voltage too. Your system will just refuse to boot and you'll have to clear CMOS to boot it again. You can only kill RAM by increasing the voltage a lot or by overheating it. Also, CPU voltage alone doesn't kill CPUs. What kills CPUs is high voltage in combination with high current. Even if you set your CPU at 1.40V, if the current is small, your CPU shouldn't be affected. That's why idling at 1.50V won't damage a CPU, but running all cores at 5.0 Ghz in Cinebench at 1.50V for example will likely damage or degrade it unless you're cooling it down with liquid nitrogen. That doesn't mean that it's fine to pump unnecessarily high voltages into the CPU, of course.

@@bgtubber But that is what I'm saying: my cpu used 1,4V while under heavy load (cinebench r23). That can't be 'not dangerous'. But who knows, maybe I am wrong about that. Less performance might be another thing then

@@stefane.1900 Hm. May have set some BIOS settings wrong? If not, just use more conservative setting until you are comfortable with the voltage and temperature. It should be stressed that this video is for advanced users only. If you don't know what you are doing, you probably shouldn't be doing it. Only proceed at your own risk with the understanding that what you are doing can be dangerous for your hardware, but that should go without saying. 🙂

@@SkatterBencher Sorry to bother you, i think i have a global problem with my RAM or something else, but i can't solve it. DRAM led is always glowing on my MOBO. Precision boost is working propely.
