Russian forces trying to break through Ukrainian defenses have encountered a defense beyond their expectations and continue to suffer heavy casualties. According to a recent statement by Colonel Victor Solimchuk, Deputy Commander of the Kharkiv Operational Tactical Group, more than 90% of the 10,350 soldiers sent by the Russian army to attack Kharkiv have been killed by Ukrainian forces.
Russia launched an offensive in the region on May 10. The attack targeted two locations: The village of Lyptsi on the road to Kharkiv, which is of great strategic importance, and the town of Vovchansk, which would serve as a base from which to attack Lupiansk.
