Everyone makes mistakes,
and whether you’re a newbie live sound engineer trying to get your first gig, or a pro who’s been doing it for years, there’s surely something you can improve on. Here’s the top 5 mistakes that I’ve seen in the field or made myself and how you can avoid making them in the future.

I’ve been mixing for 30y…I literally can’t know everything, and I’m happy to admit I don’t. But I also know my time pushing faders is coming to an end (because I can’t stay up so late anymore 😂), so I’m learning IPv6 and networking and Dante and Linux. I’ll happily show the young punks some of my old dog tricks, but I don’t see too many coming up or asking questions.

Hahaha this is real, my love of sleep always clashes with my love of late night music. Why is it that music is less fun at 6pm than it is at 11pm?

I resonate with this so much. I would never be where I'm at if I was a stick in the mud. An easy free way to progress in this life... allow perspectives to enter your life and layer with you.

In regards to the keeping up with new tech and therer's always something new on the market, do you have any suggestions as to where you can keep up with it? Like a forum or certain social media accounts etc? Great video btw :)

What a great question. I'm a big fan of r/livesound on Reddit. I always feel like a noob when I'm scrolling Reddit. I've also heard good things about the signal to noise discord. Read sound on sound magazine, if it still exists (I am guilty of not taking my own advice)

I think one of the best thing to do is to subscribe to all the manufacturer's email lists and keep up with training. I know that nowadays it's always difficult to find time to attend proper training sessions, but in my opinion, it's the best way to learn about certain products and engage with other engineers who are in the same room as you.
