At least the rain running down the crack of your ass works kinda like a bidet. And make sure the back of your pants are completely covered by the front while they’re down by your knees, unless you’re wearing a poncho. Sounds like a good reason to keep your footprint and some cord easily accessible.

Last summer I convinced my sister to hike with me for a day (was doing a long distance hike through semi-urban terrain and she lives close to the trail I was on) and it was the wettest day of my whole three-week trip. Our socks were soaked, she didn't have good outdoor gear so she was in jeans or whatever, but we had so much fun! I still see myself stopping to wring out my socks halfway, and in the next ten steps splashing right into a puddle. She loved it and this summer I'm for sure going to take her with me on an overnight trip. Never let wet weather stop you 💙

I’ve been life-threateningly cold & wet in the army, all my gear goes in individual waterproof compression or stuff sacks, sometimes inside a pack liner (they never fit the pack perfectly! That’s what I want), and I use a pack cover. Take it from me, ANY amount of weight is worth your essential gear staying dry. Did you know a wet intermediate cold GI sleeping bag weighs like 15lb and takes 3 or 4 days to dry? You can get decent sleep in it if you wear your Gumby gear, though.

Had this happen to me last weekend. Went to do a 1 day camp up in Berowra NSW with an experienced hiker friend. Weather was meant to be a little rainy but turned ugly in the morning, to the point it almost flooded our tents. We were meant to do a short but challenging hike after we packed up, we waited a few hours but it wasn't clearing. It actually got heavier. Friend made the call to cancel the rest, and head back. My first time dealing with camping and raining, my pack didn't have a liner and got quite drenched, learnt that lesson well. Really appreciate the tips mate, thank you.

Pack liner saved me big time on my adventure hiking trail trip video. I literally fell into a river basically submerging my pack… everything in the pack liner stayed dry. You don’t even have to waterproof it correctly. If you have all your stuff packed inside a compactor bag, the air trapped by the gear and bag will create enough buoyancy to the point of being able to float.

I like the emphasis. On the packing, a couple of personal notes: I've been a compactor bag guy for, like, forever. And one problem, that at least I have, is even the heavy duty bags get holes (no, I'm not careful enough, especially "in the field"). It's fine if I'm going out for a few days--I can start with a new bag and be sure (I'm stubborn--I used to put bags over my head to see light spots then seal them so I didn't have to throw the bag away). But if you're trekking? Trust me, all it takes is a a hole or two in your compactor bag--water will find it. So...yep, just purchased a couple waterproof bags, and I'll have to see how they work. I also have a Dynema backpack. To date, it has not leaked. As Kyle said, I don't RELY on it, but between that and a liner... redundancy is the theme to emphasize here. Layer your means of keeping you and your gear dry, and you improve your chances of success.

I'm just dipping my toe into backpacking, but I have done a lot of bicycle camping in all weathers, and some sea kayak camping, the rule for the latter being "if it isn't in a quality dry bag, assume it will end up soaking wet." So far for backpacking, I have taken a similar approach; I don't like relying on the One Liner Bag To Rule Them All, because (i) it's not critical to keep every single thing dry; and (ii) it's a single point of failure. Rather, for the stuff that Absolutely. Positively. Must. Be. Dry (sleeping bag, sleeping pad, sleeping clothing, tent, Anker & charging cords) each goes into a quality lightweight dry bag appropriately sized for the item. Also, similar to your excellent point about planning your pack arrangement to ensure efficiency in a downpour, I try to do the same with the specific packing of my tent, fly, pole set, and stakes. My current tent is, alas, not amenable to setting up fly-first, so I MacGyvered a solution to that. If I arrive at camp and it's raining, everything else stays in the pack. Pole set goes up first, using my homemade hack; then I attach the fly; then I crawl under the fly to attach the tent; then I toss the Must.Be.Dry items, still in their dry bags, into the dry/protected tent. If you've never practiced setting up your shelter system in a downpour in the comfort of your own basement or patio or backyard . . . maybe do that. :)

living and hiking in Oregon, rain is the first thing you pack for, and it can be cleansing for the soul, even though it sucks. If you are prepared and have the appropriate gear, it can be enchanting. But you have to go into the hike as if it's the norm, and in Oregon it is the norm. In Oregon, you have to dress as if it will rain, wear quick dry gear and NO COTTON. Once cotton is wet, it doesn't dry very fast/fast enough, and you can go into hypothermia quickly at high elevations. Also, make sure you have good shoes that wont let your feet get wet, wet socks and shoes can also be a road to hypothermia. If you're planning an overnight and the weather changes drastically, quickly, reassess your plans and whether its better to head back to the trailhead/your car. I've seen this happen in the Cascades in summer. A beautiful sunny day and then suddenly change into thunderstorm weather with heavy rain. Sometimes it's not worth trying to stick it out if it's a bad storm

Use bandana to wipe down or buff or whatever to dry. Nice piano speech drama lol btw. I am a poncho tarp and liner wearable shelter person I have a shelter on me at all times . ..I know I'm weird for that I feel it's best that it is a possibility for green screen in the field say you don't want nature ..but why...your filming a video in the city but can't because your in the woods. You could possibly use the green poncho tarp in a modified lean to configuration or basically wall backdrop. For me it's the best way to do green screen for lighting. Anyway I would say Kyle thank you for your humor and originality and good info humbly I admit maybe with shame that I've disobeyed some of these practical ideas such as gear sleep system waterproofing I'm not proud of for but I am constantly learning and improving. Back onto my original tarp comment which was morphed into a video making tip. I would say that I would eat under my pouncho to keep somewhat sheltered not most convenient but maybe. I make the mistake of bad nutrition often. Good content Kyle this is a good way to start my day. And I believe this is yesterday's video so I'm a day late lol

The only time I have problem with embracing the weather is if it goes on for months and never seems to stop. (Yes, I do hike for months sometimes.) Eventually, I lose it start complaining. (But it takes more than poor weather to make me give up though.) It should be mentioned though that if it just keep raining for say ten days non-stop, eventually your stuff will be effected be moisture. Then you need to dry your gear inside somewhere or make a fire place. There is one weather condition that is worse when it comes to keeping stuff dry and that is when you have a mix of ice, snow and sub zero temperatures. I still have no clue how to keep my sleeping bag dry in such weather. The problem is condensation. The moisture from your body freezes as on the outer layers of your sleeping bag and Eventually your sleeping bag is seriously wet! Not fun. And it smells terrible when the ice melts. My number one enemy is not rain though. It's wind. Anything more than 7 or 8 m/s and I begin to panic. Scared, scared, scared. It's not possible to walk under such weather conditions in a mountanous area, of course, so I have to seek shelter. But the wind still drives me crazy in the tent I fear the worst. If I can talk to a friend who can calm me down it's manageable, but sometimes there is no signal. I guess I should have a satellite phone?

I hate hiking too, but love the outdoors. What I see is that in an effort to be ultralight people don't carry the gear they need to be dry, or enough of it, anyway. Read about people sending gear home, or ahead on the trail because they decided they didn't need it anymore, but turned out that the next day they really needed it. And, for what, a couple of ounces of weight? Be prepared, and to hell with the weight. Take your time, enjoy the outdoors, carry the gear you need, and enjoy the outdoors and experience, not how many miles you traveled that day.

I'm bad for not eating/drinking while hiking in the rain - though in my own defence, I'm generally hiking at most 2-3 hours from the car park to a camp site, not trying to get in x number of miles/kilometres per day on a Thru Hike. It's not the end of the world for me if lunch is at the camp site rather than halfway up the trail. Took an "unscheduled bath" in a mountain stream once - fully clothed and with my pack on my back - and ended up with all my clothes and bedding spread out on rocks to dry in the sun - a properly-sealed pack liner would've avoided a lot of problems, there. And, yeah, hiking in the rain sucks. It's really uncomfortable... but you get to a point when you realise 1) you're wet, 2) it's impossible to get wetter and 3) it's only water - so "fuck it!"

Bothy shelters are great for taking breaks for lunch or waiting for a heavier shower to pass. They take seconds to set up once you know how, warm up pretty quickly and block pretty much all wind and rain. You can buy ones to fit around 6 people, but a 2 person one is good for solo use. My one is 2 person, when I'm alone the other seat has my bag on it. It both keeps the bag dry and weighs it down. They tend to be a bit on the bulkier side but in the right conditions they're well worth it., especially if you're using it with someone else.

1. Yes, I've eaten numerous Clif bars in the pouring rain - out of my hipbelt pocket. I'm willing to spend a few ounces on a Camelbak because I drink more. The tube is right by mouth and I can sip without even breaking stride. Commercial: Nope. Sugar in rehydration mix is actually important. 2. Yes, I use a pack liner AND a pack cover - but I hike a lot in "shoulder season" and I don't want to wind up with an icy pack. "Waterproof" packs aren't usually seam sealed all that well. 3. Yes. Rain jacket on the top. Food bag next if I'm not bringing a bear can. Tarp or rainfly next. 4. Yes. I don't think I had dry socks on the NPT any time after the first day. If you're hiking a trail that wet, wax your feet. 5. Meh. Life's tough all over. A bad day in the woods is better than a good day in the lab.

Big mistake is setting up a double wall tent by yourself in the rain. I did that on the CT and I wish I either stopped before it started to rain or pushed more miles in the rain until it stopped. Trash compactor bag is a must for a bag liner 👍🏼 Keeping rain pants and jacket on the outside mesh of the pack is a must for easy access. When it comes to food, I usually had one dinner (for me mashed potatoes) in a pouch that way I didn’t have to leave the tent to clean cooking supplies in the rain.

Oh, crap, Kyle's gone inspirational! Everything you said about hiking in the rain is 100%. In addition, first thing at camp is start a fire, it warms your body, dries your clothes quickly, lifts your spirits--oh, crap, that inspiration thing is catching. All your fault, Kyle.

Had a friend in my tramily flip his canoe on an aqua blaze of the Shenandoah river during our AT thru. Homies pack literally floated down the river. All the stuff in his nylofume pack liner? Bone dry. Well worth the investment (of a whopping $3).

The way to tell if you're drinking enough in any weather is the color of your urine. If it's dark, you need to drink some more. As for "embracing the suck," I think it helps that I like stomping in mud puddles.

My aarn pack has taken a beating with serious rain and hail in the Rockies. Nothing inside got wet. The pack dried out quickly too. Of course it's easy to move when 40 pounds feels like 15.

I didn't know how to dry out my shoes when it rained so I try to dry them out the best I could the next day they was still a little wet but not bad cause it was mainly from the outside in and not the inside out... I had dry socks though...
@philsmith2444
@philsmith2444 Жыл бұрын
That’s the best way I’ve found, dry socks the next morning and when they start getting wet swap them out for another dry pair. If it’s not raining hang the wet pair on your pack to dry, if it is raining then keep them on so yesterday’s pair will be dry for tomorrow.

Clif bars are nasty. And they come in one flavor: Clif Bar Flavor. Yuck. Best equipment drying chance I ever had: In Maine, I came across a highway with a rest stop out in the sun. I had to stop anyway because I had fallen and had an elbow gash. Laid some damp stuff out on the sidewalk. Made a big difference.

Carry some powdered soup, an extra ramen, or whatever. If it’s cold, rainy, and it just sucks, throw up camp early and get warm and dry. A hot cup of soup or noodles really helps, but wait until you have your shelter up, are in dry clothes, maybe with your quilt draped over you before cooking in your vestibule and downing those hot fluids.

Still wish there was a laminate solar pack cover . I think Pack covers may have been more practical in the old school days when you had an entire kitchen strapped to the outside.

I'm just now watching your PCT thru-hike and in one episode you mention starting late because that's when you got the permits. You've done extensive gear videos.. you should do one outlining the process of getting permits for the AT and the PCT and what the permits... well, permit.
@janefreeman995
@janefreeman995 Жыл бұрын
Hi, The PCT permits are snatched up on one day online openings in the fall and a day in the winter. The chips fall where they may with far more applicants than permits. Southbound has its own dates, too, but it's more difficult in terms of being fit enough to complete it since the start date is much later due to snow, and there's a greater chance of running into fire closures. If you're after the fact, one option is the flip flop... starting midway and walking north, then flying back to the midway point and walking south.. The people at PCT admin can walk one thru the process. It was a great option. I missed all of the snow going north but ran into fire closures going south, but I'm also slower than many because I'm older. Each year is a little different, such as this year has the heavy snowfall...I don't know about the AT. :)

Waterproof bags are cool but I have to agree don’t trust them. Human error high especially when you’re dealing with shit weather. I have a sea to summit bag with pack straps for canoeing trips which it’s made for . It’s suppose to be waterproof and for the most part it is. Until it’s pouring and you’re packing camp and you don’t roll the top tight and then oh what’s that the tiniest opening. The rain gods will pump the water and French your stuff. However if you take extra precautions with a liner you will be happier for it.

Fun fact! No such thing as bad weather only bad planning! Not necessarily planning around perfect weather unless your a billionaire with a jet and all the plans revolve around you! An Irish man taught me this, and it has never let me down! I’ve never been to Arizona but where I would like to go hiking and camping depending on the year and the place right off the bat in the summer I would prepare for hypo/ hypothermia and flash flooding, contractor grade black trash bags are handy because I will smush my clothes/towel inside and make it a vacuum seal twist it a few times and then take the extra for skin and wrap it again and twist it once more and it also serves as a poncho in case or cut down the length and make a single person dry spot. Don’t get your stuff wet and gain ten pounds also . I love hiking in the rain when you are burning it off just not torrential downpour like what you are saying sucks. But I have froze wet and miserable in Hawaii but we also eat like kings from the land!

Rain becomes more mute if you have a small easily set-up rain fly. I've used a tarp. That doubled as my tent. No hassle and is half the weight of a tent. That allows for a fast camp when you know how to set it up right. As it can be a full tent? Or it can be a simple rainfly that does not need to be unpacked to set it up. As a portion is left to being easily pulled out to cover you and your back along the trail for quick stops. Spent 4 months in the Alaskan bush prospecting alone with only a single tarp. And never suffered from besrs or from the rain bothering me. Plus if a bear had decoded to bother me? I would be far better off being able to aim my gun. Than being in a tent that keeps the outside concealed from view. That are called 'bear tacos' in Alaska for a reason.

Rain jackets are *not* for keeping you dry while hiking. They are for keeping you dry in camp. You are getting wet regardless of the type and quality of your jacket. I know this is a hot take, but it's how I and most of my friends thru. You really have to know yourself and know your body for this to work. Two exceptions: * temperature is below ~40F * those who move slowly and can't generate enough heat. Even then I would consider wool instead of a waterproof.

Two rolls of dog poop bags, one black, one anything but black. Black gets trash, other color gets any damp/smelly/etc. stuff. That way I don't accidentally throw away my wet socks, but they also don't make anything else in the pack wet.
