In this Week’s End video - 5 More Hoyas In Bloom - we’re taking a look at five more Hoyas that all started to bloom since the last video. The plants blooming this week are Hoya spa ff serpens (Xiaojie 001), Hoya lanceolata bella (inner variegated), Hoya caudata (fka flagellata), Hoya decipulae, and Hoya lacunosa (Giant Leaf). I’m very excited to see all of these Hoyas blooming at the same time, and some of them are blooming for the first time.

Hoyas have such a spectrum of bloom shapes. color, and scents, all of them beautiful. I have to say I've never seen a more unique, other-worldly flower than that of your H. decipulae. Thank you so much for sharing your successes with us. They're inspiring.

Bella’s are really worthwhile, they flower & flower. The Decipulae has stolen my heart. Their flowers are amazing. Do you grow all your Hoya in Pon? One Lacunosa Lover here 😂😂

I'm curious to see how long the H decipulae flowers last. With four peduncles currently, it would be cool to see them all in bloom together. Most of my Hoyas are in pon-ish (not the brand name), but I also use a coco chunk/pumice/sphagnum mix for a few - and self-watering for either mix. Beautiful blooms and love the "guest appearance" around the 12 min mark. LOL I just spent 4 hours taking 8 hoyas out of their tiny sphagnum moss pots and getting them properly settled. Thanks for another great video. Happy weekend! 🇨🇦

The turkeys wander through my yard several times a day. My neighbor puts out corn for them, and I have a low birdbath, so they come through for food and a drink. I hate picking Hoyas out of sphagnum, if anything requires a tasty beverage it's that task. Thanks for watching and adding your comment

I'm thinking about the Hoya Collection tour, and a number of people have asked. I've currently got about 150 Hoyas, so that's something of a major project. Focusing on five or six a week is working for now. But thanks for making the suggestion.

I think the Giant Leaf came from an Etsy store, but I'm not sure its still open. It may be called by other "cultivar" names - Large, Big, etc.. Those H lacunosas can be addictive. As always thanks for watching.

I absolutely love the Hoya Bella inner variegated. I am on my 4th Bella green form, the others died (over a course of 5 years) one little cutting that is now hanging off the window sill with 2 new leafy stems and another shooting out 2. Cool! It's growing in leca. So this is giving me confidence to purchase the Luis Bois❣️Now that lacunosa 👍🏽...Thanks for sharing. Dee, NY

I just started following you a few months ago and I’m not sure if you have ever given a plant room tour but I sure would like to see it! My husband & I have been talking about enclosing our current back patio and converting it to a sunroom/plant room. From what I see of yours, is pretty close to what I have pictured in my minds eye. Your Hoyas are beautiful! I really enjoy your videos! I have my daughter watching them as well!

Thanks. I've considered a Hoya collection tour, but with about 150 Hoyas it's something of an overwheming project. Right now, a few plants a week works. I love my enclosed patio, and I live out here once the warm weather comes. The glass panels can be switched for screens as needed. It's unheated, so the plants that sumer out there all migrate indoors in the fall. Thanks for watching and adding your comment.

My plants haven't all come from a single grower, and I have purchased from over fifty online and brick and mortar sellers (with only one or two bad experiences). By far, the greatest number of my Hoyas have come from Plants Wake You Up (all one word dot com). Nothing but good things to say about them. Logee's in Connecticut, every Hoyas I have purchased from them has been great and has done well.

Thanks for watching and asking your questions. My Hoya Room averages in the 70s year round and 50-60% humidity, so not particularly warm and not particularly humid. I'm sure some would like more, but this what I have. I do grow most of my Hoyas in pon-ish (it's not the brand name), but I also grow some in a coco chunk/pumice/sphagnum mix - and self-watering pots for either of those mediums. I don't use any soil based mixes for my Hoyas.

@@PlantedInRI thanks for the info. I am growing my Hoyas , philodendron and ripsalis in my laundry room. All the plants are in my substrate I make from cococoir, orchid bark, perlite and worm castings. They get natural light from the windows and natural humidity averaging 70 to 90 percent. I think I need to increase the temp, it goes from 60 degrees at night up to 72 in the day. I tried Pon but it was not successful. Pon works for alacasia. I have 100 Hoya and love trading with others, and enjoy propagating. Time to go back to the drawing board for future Hoya success.😊

Kathryn - Your temps sound comparable to mine. Your mix sounds good, too. I'm using pumice instead of perlite these days since perlite dust is carcinogenic, and pumice doesn't float. They key to pon - as I'm sure you know, but for others who may read this - is self-watering pots and a nutrient solution since generic pon has no nutrients. Thanks again.

How do you keep bugs off your plants?

That's a good question, and the answer somewhat depends upon which bugs and which plants. When I bring in a new plant, I keep it isolated for a while, and check it daily to catch and treat anything right away. There are some plants I don't buy because of the pest problems they often bring. For fungus gnats I have carnivorous plants. For spider mites I use systemics. For mealy bugs I use alcohol. And I just assume that any new Hoya has flat mites and treat with sulfur. Some folks use beneficial insects, but I haven't tried that yet. If you grow plants, you're going to encounter pests at some point. It's a given, so don't panic if it happens, just be prepared to act. Thanks for watching and asking your question.
