Fun fact about the S160: they were equipped with a "self destruct valve" which would drain all water from the boiler and shut off water supply from the tender in case of the locomotives being "borrowed" by enemy forces. Once opened, the valve could not be closed. Seems they never had to use it, as they ended up blowing up anyway...

Little note about the Class 50: There was a prototype locomotive that came before it (DP2) which was essentially a Class 55 Deltic shell with a Class 50 engine, this lasted between 1962 and 1967 (When it was involved in a nasty accident at Thirsk on the ECML and was scrapped.). It was not a bad locomotive and in its last years, it was used on Class 55 Deltic services. You'd think BR would chill with a simple fleet of DP2 locomotives, but in the design specification. They went overkill and specified Dual Braking, ETH, Dynamic Braking, Multiple Working up to 3 locos, Push/Pull equipment and Slow Speed control for MGR workings.
@ChrisCooper312
@ChrisCooper312 2 жыл бұрын
That was the big mistake. They had a good prototype in DP2, but then instead of sticking with the same design and just updating the bodywork, they stuck in lots of new features that were not on the prototype and proved to be problematic. That said, the 50s were always going to need ETH since they were designed to haul trains on the northern part of the WCML which were nearly all electric heat only Mk2s, and later would haul air conditioned Mk2s. Dual brakes were a given for that period when vacuum brakes were disappearing fast. Why they thought to fit slow speed control to an express passenger loco though....
@williamgeorgefraser
@williamgeorgefraser 11 ай бұрын
Back in the mid 60s, DP2 was used regularly on the London-Perth Anglo-Scottish Car-Carrier service which ran on the Glenfarg route. It went past the end of the playing fields of Dunfermline High School so I used to see it almost every weekday. Pity it was involved in the crash as it would have been a great candidate for preservation.

Re the class 50's, a lot of the early issues was simply all the 'clever' electronics to help the engines cope with running 6 x 400hp traction motors and controlling that power. The Portuguese railways had a set of less clever class 50 copies that ran perfectly fine. Hence when they were rebuilt they lost some of the various electric traction control and other stuff. Noticeably, when the clever electronics worked, it did improve the engines performance in accelerating with heavy loads. Overall, I'm not sure that they deserve a place here. Also well over a third of the class is still running 50 years after the class was built, that may be a survival rate beaten by very few diesel-electrics from anywhere in the world.

I still think "Fowler's Ghost" was the worst one ever. Although it was innovative it only ran twice (in 1861) and both times its crew were terrified it would explode. John Fowler is said to have had it bricked up in a disused tunnel for a time as he wanted to forget about it. He tried to keep it a secret hence it got the nickname Fowler's Ghost. Even now there is some debate about the details of the design and whether the one photo that we have is actually the Ghost.

The problem with the 50s wasn't quite as you describe, and certainly nothing to do with UK rainfall. They worked very well when they were used on the West Coast main line on fast services before that line was electrified north of Crewe, where they would take over from the electric at Crewe, and be worked very hard, at a continuous rate to Carlisle and Glasgow, their problems came after they moved to the western region and were working Semi-fast and stopping trains from Paddington and Waterloo to the west country, where engine revs and power demand were constantly up and down, compounded with the fact that the line runs litterally along the sea wall at Dawlish, hence the damp

Bad thing was aswell that we also took a large amount of S100s, aka yank tanks as a few called them over here, and apparently they were also called rust buckets due to the fact that their firebox’s were steel so they’d die extremely quickly, a process heightened by the fact that after ww2 they were used at Southampton docks, and it’s also funny that the fact 2 of the 4 preserved over here were only saved as they ran hot on their way to the scrap yard being towed 😂

The wheelslip issues with the Class 50 you mentioned was actually a by-product of the Class's refurbishment. During the refurbishment, they had their electronic anti-wheelslip equipment *removed*. Yes, they had anti-wheelslip equipment, and they removed it! This is what prevented the class from being transferred over to freight services after 50049 was trialled on china clay trains. That equipment would have seen the Class 50's service life extended through freight had it not been removed. A couple more British trains for you to talk about. Maybe not 'the worst', but certainly unpopular, the Bombardier Class 220/221 Voyager, and the Hitachi Class 800/801/802 IET (infamous for their cracking issues which still has members of the family out of service). And how about a best trains list? Mix things up a little?

@Steam_1402
@Steam_1402 2 жыл бұрын
Just because the S160s had one water gauge, that didn't make them a failure, and plenty of UK crews were familiar with it. The western region (where these things ran a lot) only had one water gauge on their locos as the fireman only needed one, and if your water gauge would break, you'd have a spare. Or if you had to go to the extremes, use the taps which go straight to the boiler, which allows water to leak out so you have a visualisation of where the water is. And British Rail weren't a thing in WW2 as well. Maybe do some more research before slagging off random engines and random rail companies.

The reason its in this list is because its low quality trash. Yes, its funkyional and good. But wgats better? A tool, like a hammer, that you can use for a year or three, and then breaks, or a tool that you can use for a decade oror three, or the rest of your life? And its not like it excelled beyomd all other lokomotives during its short use time. It was pretty standart. So you have a middle of the line product with an effectivly planned obsolessence of a few years. Thats why its on the list. The gague thing is just mentioned cause it killed a person.
@Steam_1402
@Steam_1402 2 жыл бұрын
@Ethribin But it's not low quality trash; it's wartime manufacturing. They only had a purpose of a few years with minor maintenance in between those years. They weren't designed to last 50 years like some steam locos, so you can hardly compare them against things which were. It's unfair, biased, and just not true. They did what they did fine, granted with a few issues, but that doesn't make them instant failures. And just because a crew member died from the gauge giving a false reading, that also doesn't make them a failure. They're a product of wartime circumstances.

I have another two Worst Locomotives from NZ, both of which we managed to preserve at least one engine of each type and both currently are under restoration (we are crazy, and we know it) though the restoration teams actually understand the issues. First, the DF class of 1954 (not the later DF class of 1979) which were the first Diesel Electrics in NZ for the NZ Railway dept, only 10 were purchased and 1 has been preserved (DF 1501). They were highly unreliable and frequently needed repairs. Lived for 20 years in service, but most of the locos in NZ are typically 50 - 60 years old..... Secondly, the RM 88 Seaters (known as Fiats, Twinsets) were frequently causing fires, breaking down due to the design of the cooling intakes and crankshafts and were designed to provide many of the branch lines with passenger services only lasting 20 - 23 years. After they were withdrawn, we attempted to reuse the coaches with locos, which failed. Managed to find one complete set, and three half sets which after one was used as a fire training centre it got damaged before No.2 end could be retrieved in a real fire... So the four undamaged cars shall be combined to created two preserved working sets.

The S160 was basically America's equivalent to the UK's WD Austerity 2-8-0. They and the 2-10-0 version weren't built for longevity either. Riddles even said you could've dumped them in the sea and he wouldn't haved cared. Thankfully, one of each have been preserved. Of the 2120 S160s built, we got 800 of them and kept them as workhorses after the war. I'm fairly confident those issues were discovered and ironed out later on. But when Modernisation came along, if they broke, we just scrapped them anyway. Sadly, none of those 800 were preserved. But 5 from other nations operate in preservation here today and all manage to put on a good show. So don't feel too guilty, Dark. Honestly, you lot have sent worse things over here. >cough!< Markle >cough!

Another problem with the 50s was the mentioned electronics. They were the first locos in the UK to use microprocessor control for the engines instead of traditional mechanical controls, and as well as the issues with the air intakes, this also didn't help their reliability. When they were refurbished, as well as the air intakes being changed, they also had the electronics replaced with mechanical controls. Interestingly both the Class 87 electrics that replaced them on their original West Coast Mainline services (they hauled trains from Preston in northern England where the electrification stopped to Glasgow until the 70s when the electrification was extended all the way), and the HSTs that replaced them in the west of England both used traditional mechanical control systems. The funny thing is you could have a whole category of bad British trains related to the inability to withstand British weather. As well as the 50 you also have the 91 which suffered very similar problems with cooling air intakes sucking in snow that melted on the complex electronics. The same winter a couple of new electric units were also suffering problems due to snow being sucked into the motors, leading to the now infamous claim of "the wrong kind of snow". The 455s were terrible at stopping in the autumn due to the now also infamous "leaves on the line". The 158s had problems operating signals for the same reason. The 465s and 466s had trouble picking up power from the third rail when it was covered in leaves or snow and due to their complex electronics and new AC motors tended to shut down. It's not just BR or even British designs either. The 465 issue with pickup was replicated by the British/German Electrostar and the French designed Juniper. Then you have the German designed Bombardier Voyager which was designed for a route that in one place runs right next to the sea where waves often break over trains, but put electronics on the roof where they failed when covered in salt water. Then there was the French designed Eurostars which also one winter sucked in snow which melted on the electronics. Even the Swiss weren't immune with their new FLIRTs suffering the same problems with signals as the 158s. That said, other than the Voyagers which still can't run on one stretch of line when it's stormy (thankfully down at the extreme end of their area of operation that's fairly well covered by other trains), all other types were modified to better handle the problems. "Leaves on the line" and "the wrong kind of snow" are still issues (as they are in many countries), but not to the same extent.

How about the Class 30/31? Needed to be re-engined, the early ones that had ETH took too much power from the engine, which made them seriously lethargic, and the door windows could KILL you.

The class 50 was a pretty near miss to be honest. The prototype was a very reliable locomotive, but British Rail made English Electric add a lot of bells and whistles to it, which resulted in reliability issues. If they had left it alone, it would have been a very successful class. To be honest with you, they were better than the class 47, which British rail standardized on.

44s were overweight and underpowered. Same with the 40s. 45s and 46s were overweight but at least had more power. There is a reason the 37s and 47s outlasted them by decades. 58s had engine problems and didn't last long at all. There is a reason 20s, 37s and 47s outlasted them by more than a decade. Going to be controversial and say 55s, iconic, exciting, but too complicated and highly strung. They did do what they were supposed to do though, sort of, which was to speed up the East Coast Mainline until it could be electrified, but there is a reason they didn't get cascaded when the HSTs replaced them. 08s, 20s, 37s, 47s and 56s though, definitely agree.

I actually like the USATC S160s, but the fact they’re on the list doesn’t surprise me as much as the actual USATC logo. Am I the only one that thinks it’s the same at the Detroit Red Wings logo? It can’t be a coincidence, they look too similar.

Another failed locomotive is the class 06 of the Deutsche Reichsbahn, in itself a good locomotive, but just as with the class 45, the boilers developed cracks, pipe runs and torn stud bolts, so that the locomotives were not convincing in front of measuring wagons or standard trains.

@@GreatCenteralGlory one of the reasons i heard for the rushing in of diesels was that it was deemed "too expensive" to put cantanery up in kings cross. Yet when the electrics did come with a few prototypes leading to the 86 highly succesfull but that was for the West coast mainline.
