Grow your woodworking business with "smalls"! Ready for the latest trends???
Often, smaller items are looked over by new builders looking to make a name for themselves because they are looking for "that one build" that they can sell for a ton of money. They aren't considering the cost of the build and the time spent making it. Ultimately any business comes down to profit margins. I'll give you a few examples of how selling items that anyone can afford can generate crazy sales with minimal cost of goods sold!
Sometimes we overthink things when the most profitable items we are looking past. Let's change that.

My husband and I are addicted to watching you. We are both 70 years old..he has several health issues including being an amputee. As soon as we found your channel....he is in his wood shop almost every now instead of sitting in his recliner watching television. He does the designing and I do the finishing. Stain, paint etc. Thank you for giving us old folks a new lease on life.

And kudos to you as well, a great support system and teammate is invaluable. Please let him know that I'm proud of him and that whether he knows it or not... he is a role model!

I am disabled and have lots of challenges... & then I have only a few tools and am poor... nevertheless you have inspired me...TY!!!!!!! I have to tell you in the event that no one else has, you remind me of how I felt as a kid when I would watch Bob Ross. I felt inspired, hopeful, that things were possible. You have the same vibe Bro. Your the Bob Ross of woodworking! I'm going to make some 'happy little' 'chicknic tables' now. God Bless!!

I have that same Stanley Miter Box and saw kit. I bought it about 18yrs ago when we lived Charlottesville VA. It's now basking in the sun on back patio waiting for me to earn enough money from "smalls" to pay for big hairier version in the years to come, after they pay for storage building/workshop with insulation, heat and AC, a long with cool Grizzly powered dust collection setup, a great place to store wood-stock, enough land that my neighbors have drive to come visit....Yes, I do have plans, but God has used men like you to give me the vision.

Dude! You’re the BOMB DIGGITY!! I’m a tile setter by trade, an artist at heart, and I’ve always wanted my own shop. You’ve inspired me to make a bunch of smalls. These have actually kept me afloat when my tile business started slowing down. Plus, I’m getting older and need to get off my knees. Brother, this is the beginning of my new business! Keep on keeping on, man. I’m a believer!

What slaps me everytime I watch you is how much monet I've thrown away in scrap in the past 30 plus years. Since I'm not what I used to be this will be a good change. Instead of out climbing ladders, crawling under houses and having to deal with traffic I can stay at home with feet on the ground and no employees to worry about and make easier money. Thanks for the inspiration.

Been following you for over a year and man. Its been a year. I had a flash in the pan moment and went pretty hard into messing with wood last winter and learned so much. But i slowed this passed summer, still had lots to learn. Fast foward to 4 weeks ago, my wife asked me to build her a simple manger for our church Christmas play. Easy enough, got a free pallet, tore it down and built one. Then my mom asked me to build her a Christmas tree she saw on pinterest. I did and my wife saw it and wanted one..and then everyone wanted one. I even have a local business that bought 3 and asked me to build 2 more! I am gonna build through the summer and sell next season..pallets are free at work and i can make the trees for the cost of 30 screws, material for a star and a lag bolt. I wouldnt have had the confidence to do this without your encouraging videos. Thank you for being awesome and thank you for being you!! Keep the informative videos coming!

A very inexpensive stain that leaves a nice, dark, aged look is white vinegar and fine steel wool. Just use about a cup of vinegar and a good chunk of steel wool and let it sit for a few days, maybe a week. The steel wool dissolves in the vinegar and you get stain. It doesn't get much cheaper than vinegar and steel wool except for stealing it.

My daughter has been feeding the local Blue Jays raw peanuts on our porch table. They wait for her every morning and let her know if she is late. This table would be great for this. Its fun yto watch the Jays fly in and grab a peanut. I think this would be a great way to sell these to those that dont have chickens.

My first project was a 6 ft corner shelf. Man was I a novice. I had a circular saw and a jigsaw. Both were given to me. I took two wooden crates and made a tablesaw and a (sorta) bandsaw. My family thought I was some kind of genius, the first ones didn't work out, but I kept trying until I had something that worked. Now after forty years I have bought most power tools needed, but I still make some tools. Necessity is the best teacher. You may learn a lot of ways that don't work, but you will learn. Don't be afraid to try. Luckily I only have scars and all my fingers!

More great ideas, thanks for sharing!! One idea for cutting handles in totes or trays is to use a large bit (like a forstner bit) to cut the two ends of the handle. That gives a nice round corner without doing the tight turn with the jigsaw. The sawing part is then just a straight line top and bottom.

First off,Love your channel. Been a subscriber for over a year now. Just wanted to comment on about the “geometric wall art”. Those started out as sound diffusers in recording studios to break up sound waves from bouncing around the room. Specialty market = specialty price, hence $1400. It looks like that market is trying to get into home diffusion, and I can see why. With homes moving away from carpet and more hard surface finishes, it stands to reason that sound travels through the home easier. This offers away to lessen that movement. The larger the piece, the more affective. This is not to be confused with sound absorption, that’s a totally different thing. Diffusion just scatters the waves, making them lose energy. Anyways thanks again for all you do for your community and see you on the next one.

Matt, I've got to tell you, I'm so glad I listened to the end. I heard you! I needed to hear that! I bought a $5.00 used table saw at a garage sale and have made many things I have sold to restaurants and wine shops in my area in the past. I'm going through a rough adjustment period in my life and I needed to hear what you said, Thank you brother. 's

Once again, great content, so THANK YOU! Not really part of your series, BUT I bought 5 cedar picket fence boards & made 5 Bluebird Nest Boxes & advertised on our NextDoor Neighbor App & CraigsList in our greater Annapolis MD area. These nest boxes go for $40~$60 each on bird web sites. I sold for $15.00 each. Within a a day, I sold all five, have cranked out 10 more & have ppl ordering 5 at a time. Mind you one fence picket. We now have a spread sheet on how many “orders” we have. My thought - make your sale price good for you & your customers. Christmas rush, but many ppl like birds! 🦉🦃

Just a quick up-date. I’m well over 50 orders completed & have also built two bird feeders for bird house customers. Fair price, quality work builds customer satisfaction. Ive had one lady come back three separate times for more.

I'm just starting out... hubby helped me get tools. I've wanted to be a wood worker since I was in middle school wood shop. I bought your chicknic table plans and it'll be my first project! Thank you for all of your inspiration. You've made me feel like this is absolutely possible to pursue wood working

First off wanted to say this is an excellent video fam. 2nd wanted to give some clarity on the one project you showcased. The "Geometric Art" that you mentioned is actually something that is very important and useful, especially for music producers. Its common name is "wood sound diffuser" its purpose is to diffuse sound so that the producer can accurately produce/mix/master the songs you hear on the radio and online. As someone that loves to do both woodwork and music production, tend to do most my woodwork oriented at selling to other musicians. But back to that project and reason for its cost, it comes down to the calculations and the wood that is used. Certain wood has better tonal qualities then others. No need to worry bout all that if just doing it as a decorative art piece. hopefully no one took this as negative, just some extra insight to help those doing this particular project to make the most then can possible by getting it looked at by the right people, and to give an answer should you get a complaint from a producer saying it isn't diffusing the sound lol. again excellent vid fam. look forward to seeing some more.

Man, Matthew, because of you I am learning and developing the discipline to even begin a project. I struggle with ADD and depression and am going through a divorce. Not to get all personal, but I just want you to know I appreciate you and the time you’ve taken to create and developed this channel. Thanks, brother. Merry Christmas to you and the fam.

I really appreciate your "pep talks." You're a great shop teacher. And you do remind me of my Jr. High Wood Shop Teacher. His influence has Lasted his shop students a lifetime, I'm sure. Thanks for encouragement and admonishment. Guys need to pick up a piece of wood and stick in a $15.00 Stanley Miter Box, with the hand powered Miter Saw, and see what happens. It doesn't take that much effort. The saw cuts amazingly well with very little weight or force behind the saw. In fact, I remember my wood shop teacher showing us, teaching us how to use a great many hand tools be allowing us to get anywhere the power tool stuff.

On the Chicknic Table. I wouldn't use a treated picket. A little standing rain water could contaminate the food. Also, a few weep holes might be a good idea. Thanks for the ideas!

Thank you for your inspiration, literally! I made the PB flatwood caddy from a 1x10x72 pine board, working around the knots; 2.5” tall sides and 6” square openings; joinery used was dados for cross boards; rabbets on edges of long sides and half laps for cross pieces and handle board. The clear pine has a clear natural finish and the 3/8” plywood bottom was rabbeted and painted turquoise before assembly. These are all new to me joinery! I am a newbie weekend woodworker, and I was looking for a project to learn these skills and to use my new jigsaw to shape the handle. Will be making a batch of these to sell later. There are several of your projects that are on my To Do list!
