Norwegian Wood is also very good (1987 though) about mental health, suicide, love, life etc… the characters are interesting and appealing in their idiosyncratic ways.

Great content. Thank you. My 2021 reads are: Deaths Head Chess Club and 18 Acres of England. Not my normal choice of reads but they were recommended to by my girlfriend and thus, interesting in their differing ways.

It’s always great to read something that you might not pick out yourself! Did you enjoy them?

I really enjoy your content. I also recently discovered Brett Easton Ellis. American Psycho was good but I found all of the description of the clothes, electronics, etc a bit exhausting, but I understand the message it sends. Just my two cents 👨‍💻

You mean you don’t like hearing about DOUBLE BREASTED WOOL COATS for 30 pages?! We basically felt the same way, but some of the consumerist language was interesting and if nothing else -did a good job of showing how insane he was.

Have you read any of William T. Vollmann's work? He has plenty of 'controversial' material while maintaining extraordinarily delicate prose.

No we haven’t, but it sounds like something that'd be right up our alley. What's a good book of his to start with? If it's banned we'll cover it on the show ✨

@@bannedbookclub I tried sending a longer reply, but it seems to have not gone through. The best introduction to his work is The Atlas (fifty-three interconnected stories about war, drug abuse, prostitution, and poverty). The hardest to get ahold of is his seven-volume overview of violence, Rising Up and Rising Down (though the abridged version is readily available, and the full seven-volume PDF can be found online if you search carefully). His two most controversial/vulgar/intense works are The Royal Family and Whores for Gloria, both involving run-down protagonists whose obsession over a prostitute leads to cruelty, violence, and self-destruction.

Thank you for the recommendations! I have never heard of this author so this sounds very interesting. 🧐 I will check it out! -Rafaella
