Fifty years ago ii made my first quilt-a log cabin quilt in a queen size. This was before rotatory cutters, chain piecing, walking feet, quilt rulers, cutting mats, pre-cuts, and machine quilting. It seemed to take forever to make, especially the hand quilting. I gave it to my mother, who loved it! (Especially since she couldn’t sew.). I won a blue ribbon at the county fair with my first quilt!! Looking back, I’m amazed I did it without all the modern conveniences we take for granted! I have this quilt now and wouldn’t take anything for it. I hope future generations will recognize the effort it took to make it. 😊

Absolutely! I appreciate it! My grandma made all of her grandkids hand sewn quilts. Unfortunately, I washed it and alot of seams came out. I recently repaired it. I realized what she went through to make all those quilts. I cherish my quilt and will not make that mistake again!!

THIS is your best video EVER!!!! I wish this had been out there years ago when I began to quilt. All the "basic" blocks in ONE VIDEO! What a concept!! And your explanations of WHY make things so understandable. All the questions I had back then would have been answered saving me hours of frustration. I hope every newbie to quilting finds this video. Well done!!!

@cindyf181
@cindyf181 22 күн бұрын
Two tips for log cabin blocks: 1) always add you next piece on the side there are 2 seams. If you are only crossing one seam that is the wrong edge to be adding to 2) sew with the new piece on the bottom, then you can watch the seams so that they won't flip over on you.

I understand. You can always make less blocks to make the quilt size more manageable.

How much bigger do you cut the original square piece from your fabric so you have the necessary wiggle room to cut the sewn block down to your desired size? I usually add 1/4" on each side. Many times I've cut the pieces to the exact measurements called for in the pattern only to have no wiggle room when I make a mistake. Also, I have a problem when I use a pre-cut kit. No wiggle room whatsoever! I frequently can't use steam nor Best Press as the pieces shrink. I'm going to check out your blog. Great teaching video.

Question..... how do you keep the bottom fabric from NOT becoming shorter than the top even when that are the same length when you start ??
@sewbeitquilts
@sewbeitquilts 27 күн бұрын
This is a good question. This happens because the feed dogs feed the bottom fabric through nice and even but the top fabric doesn’t and can get stretched. Starching helps this and so does pinning. This mainly happens to me on long border pieces or long sashing pieces so I make sure to pin those really well.

Great tutorial! Question, i have several of your square and flying geese trim locks. How do you store them? I have them all in a basket right now, but i have to dig through the jumble to find the right size. And i don't want them getting banged around. May try to find a flat tray or something.

You didn’t explain that the traditional Log Cabin has a reddish colored center block to represent the fireplace of the home… I think that’s important to understand the designer’s objective. And that there is a ‘dark’ value side and a ‘light’ value side to the pattern.

Do you spin your seams on the back to reduce bulk for the longarm?

I only do if many points are meeting in one place, for example, if I am making a pinwheel block then I spin them.
