5 Must-Try Japanese Food Experiences in Tokyo

Japanese Food is awesome, and the overall dining experience is just as fun. If you are looking for places to eat in Tokyo, here are five great Japanese food experiences that I love while living in Tokyo.
1. Japanese Grill (Robata) - You sit around a few men who cook all of the meat and vegetables right in front of you on a grill. You just point to what you want and they grab it with their giant wooden spatulas.
2. Ramen - My favorite Japanese food, and perhaps the most well recognized Japanese dish apart from sushi. There are hundreds of places to choose from in Tokyo, each with their own rendition of the classic. One spot where you can get a large variety of options is on "Ramen Street" in the lower level of Tokyo Station.
3. Yakitori - Meat and veggies on sticks, cooked over a similar grill as the Robata, Yakitori is a favorite among Tokyo residents because it's fast and goes great with beer. The most famous area for Yakitori in Tokyo is down "Memory Lane" or "Piss Alley" just outside the Shinjuku Train Station.
4. Chanko Nabe - The ultimate in gluttony for a normal civilian, but a necessary bulking strategy for up-and-coming sumo wresters in the Ryogoku neighborhood of Tokyo. There are many different versions of this massive stew, and they are all aggressive and delicious.
5. Conveyor Belt Sushi - As I mention in the video, there are a million different ways sushi is served in Tokyo. One of the most fun methods is by way of the conveyor belt sushi.
Bonus - Convenient stores such as FamilyMart, Lawson's, and 7 Eleven are a major part of Japanese Food culture in Tokyo. People are busy and need a quick meal, so I wanted to take you around real quick and show you what's inside!

If I had something to offer the Japanese people I would there in a heartbeat, what an amazing place. That system with the little sushi monorail is so awesome, and the Japanese 7-11 is light years ahead of ours. Modern Japan and its' people are a model of how humanity should be, free, yet disciplined, and happy too. I wish I could afford to go there just once, just once.

Thank you Gareth, for sharing your food experience in Japan! It's an excellent video. I chose this video to show to my English students in Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia), we are talking about experiences in our class. I have tried Japanese food but not in Japan, but I do agree with you that Bangkok and Istanbul has some of the best food in the world. I lived in both cities and thoroughly enjoyed the culture and the food. I am an English teacher and over the past 22 years I have worked in 6 countries: Singapore, Malaysia, China, Kazakhstan, the country of Georgia and Turkey and now my 7th country, Mongolia. Hope you keep travelling and keep sharing your videos!

I went to that conveyor belt Sushi in Shibuya in 2017 end of September. It's around the same time you uploaded this video. We came upon it while walking in Shibuya. There were people (mostly locals) lined up all the way to the outside waiting their turn. When you see locals waiting to enter a restaurant then don't miss the opportunity. The sushi was delicious but the most fun part was the experience. Affordable prices too. Oh yes! The convenience store food is awesome. I've never seen such a elaborate meals from 7 Eleven.

Just found your channel and watching this I completely forgot I had something in the oven! Still partly edible but the baking dish is going to be a major clean-up undertaking! I was surprised to see the yakitori bar looking almost identical to one in my town, including the stairs and the narrowness. Will have to wait a week before paying it a visit, but seeing all these great restaurants is just mouth-watering! Thanks for sharing the experience!

I 'm very glad you introduce not only foods but culture in Tokyo. You could also go eat to Kansai (Osaka,Kyoto,Nara). Because Kansai has a much longer history. It's been the capital of Japan for 1000 years before Edo(Tokyo) period. There are variety of dishes, from deluxe one to Class B gourmet. Talking about Ramen, you should really go to Kyushu for Tonkotsu , using pig bones soup stock.

Mate, followed your advice. Went to Inakaya Robata. Enjoyed the experience but was not expecting a 25,000 Yen bill for a small feed. Luckily I asked for the menu half way through ordering. Be warned for those who choose to visit a Robata without any knowledge on how expensive these restaurants can be. A single king prawn was 5,000 Yen or roughly $50 USD

The cost isn't for food itself, it's for the actual service...and the new tax for sitting in a restaurant. They don't allow tipping, they just put it into the price. Price for price it's cheaper to go to a higher end restaurant...better quality food, more food, relatively same price tag.

Everything looks so yummy. People always think about French food as the peak of culinary, but I think from what I've just seen that Japanese food looks so aesthetic and tasty. I would love to taste the ramen and the Sushi bar. Amazing!

I love food so much that I couldn't pick just one type of cuisine, but Japanese is most definitely at the top of my list... along with Mexican, Indian, Thai, French, Italian, Mediterranean, oh man! 😃

5:00 I've always wanted to eat at those tiny restaurants that serve like one dish. I just love the environment and ambiance. If I ever open up a restaurant it would definitely be something like this.
